  • What a way to celebrate Christmas and wrap up 2022 with Laowa's new 6mm f2 Zero-D Auto lens. It may have just overtaken my current favourite lens of the year, 18mm f0.95 Argus. This is a special photography bias version of the same focal length cine lens that Laowa introduced earlier this year. So for those who want the widest rectilinear lens on micro four thirds platform, this is it! What and find out why I like it. #microfourthirds, #photography #omsystem

    Thanks for your review. I agree it is one of the most interesting MFT lenses since the 8-25 f4 from Olympus. A 12mm equivalent was missing the whole mft system and its nice to see Laowa closing this gap

      Thanks Jens, absolutely. I do wonder why neither Panasonic or OM makes ultra (extreme) wide prime lenses? I know they bot have something around 7mm but they are all zooms, which are bulkier and heavier (and more expensive). Panasonic made the 9mm but could easily be wider.

    I think I'll be retiring the venerable 7.5mm manual for this one! I did pick up the PL 9mm so that's 9mm ~100º, 7.5mm ~110º, 6mm ~122º, and I can skip that middle step if I have such an incredibly wide option. I'm looking forward to comparisons!

    This is absolutely crazy! As someone that does interior and architecture photography, this is an aboslute game-changer!!! I am currently using the 9-18mm Olympus lense for that, but 3 more millimeters adds more than 20° degrees more to the viewing angle!!! That is totally insane?! 122° viewing angle for interiors is nuts!!! Damn you Jimmy, now I need this little monster in my life!

      A new lens comes along and suddenly we forget about the Panasonic 7-14 mm. Problem with going too wide for interiors is that it starts to give a false impression of the size of space. Or maybe that is the purpose when selling real estate.

    • @stefanvasilev9318
      @stefanvasilev9318 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@yohan2437 Well, let's look at it shall we - the Panasonic 7-14mm is $750 used, the Olympus 7-14mm is $1100 used. So yeah, 6mm IS better, because you can always crop in, BUT you get the extra coverage. For almost half (or a third) of the price. New. So again, it is sth special indeed, and kudos to smaller brands for pushing the limits, both in features and capabilities AND in pricing. ps. Yep, you guessed it, more spacious IS better in real estate photography 😉

    • @DaveHaynie
      @DaveHaynie ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yohan2437 It is totally the reason for use in real estate. Well, maybe half of it. They want to convey the sense of space, which doesn't work if you need ten shots to take in a room. But yeah, they're also selling the space to a potential buyer, so making a tiny room look less tiny might bring in more shoppers. But it's ultimately "the sales pitch" at least for those not foolish enough to buy from photos. I understood this when, some decades back, I shot my own house photos because that wasn't quite a thing everyone was doing online just yet. I also put together an web site that let a buyer navigate the house. The buyers saw the site.. so worth the effort.

    Good review of an awesome little lens, and excellent samples Jimmy! Very tempting. I already have their 10mm f/2 C&D Dreamer, as well as their insane 210 degree 4mm circular fisheye, plus the Oly 9-18, 7-14, 8-25, and a couple of other fisheyes. This could fill a niche for a compact super wide (cuz my7-14 is a monster). But an exposed USB port?? Kudos to them for adding that for updates, but couldn't they engineer a rubber flap or something?

    Excellent lens. Just got mine. Like it more than the 7.5 auto that I had. Btw, Voigtlander also chips some of their lenses. Provides EXIF data but not auto aperture.

    • @DaveHaynie
      @DaveHaynie ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm good with manual lenses... if I can get a chip that simply IDs the lens -- so I can track it and automatically apply corrections -- I'm good. But if you have aperture control your probably also have aperture in EXIF. That's useful, particularly when shooting examples to be used in articles. For pure art, maybe less of an issue.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching my videos! In terms of the 6mm that depends on how you are going to use the lens. If you plan to use the lens for both videos and photos, the new auto version is better especially it has much better sunstar when stop down. The T2.1 cine version is good for using follow focus on gimbal if needed. But otherwise equally as good.

  • @TheNaught1
    @TheNaught1 ปีที่แล้ว

    @RED35 Thanks for the review and promised comparisons. 2 questions - Did you try it with a filter on the 58mm threads, and notice any trouble? And, does the lens hood stay in place, or spin easily like the 7.5mm?

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The hood is very snugged and fits really tight once it's one and not easy to come off, not like the 7.5. They have fixed it. I have no problem using 58mm filters, don't stack them though as you may risk further darken the corners. If you want to stack filters, you need to use square slot-in filters or step-up rings to get larger diameter filters to avoid any potential corner degradations.

    I feel like the PL 9mm is in a different league from the Laowa UWA lenses because of the lack of AF motors and weather sealing. It should be thrown into an UWA prime comparison, which might be what Jimmy has in mind.
    To clarify, I just got the electronic contact version of the 7.5mm f/2 at the holiday sales rate after borrowing a friend's copy of the original 7.5mm for a few months, and I'm kinda waffling on the purchase with news of this new UWA and the apparently improved interfacing with the camera. I think Jimmy could give a more in-depth comparison between how the 6mm compares to the 7.5mm, 10mm, and 50mm macro in this regard. The holiday sale price was good, at 100 USD less than the price of the 6mm at retail, but if I felt like I needed the extra width I might return the 7.5mm and spring for the 6mm.
    In terms of actual use, I'm not sure if I want to go wider than 7.5mm. I do use the lens for street and very dynamic environmental portraits, but 6mm, despite being about 12 degrees wider in all directions, might not really change what I can do, idk. I would have to sample the lens to get an idea, or check out comparisons between 15mm and 12mm equivalent focal length portraits.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wouldn't disagree Vector, the 9mm PL is unique and hence I said I like it and I still do, just this can be a very different beast altogether. That 3mm is quite a big difference. While the 9mm is great for AF applications such as gimbal filming or some action shots, together with Vlogging, the 6mm is something that many who don't need operate in speed to appreciate. Both can produce amazing photos for sure.

      It's more a prime vs zoom question. This Laowa is a prime so you don't have the flexibility in focal length. Also, it's not weather sealed or freeze proof. But Laowa is also a stop faster, much much smaller and lighter, and can use normal filters, which can be a deal breaker for many landscape photographers.

    OK, stop right there with that comments re Panasonic! I have five Lumix cameras and five Lumix/Leica lenses (plus assorted others) and none of them is deficient in terms of build quality or performance. I also have other photo gear, including Oly (which is also of high-quality, although one of their cameras failed and isn't worth the cost of repair).
    Now, onto the Laowa in question. I just received it so I’ve yet to really put it through its paces, so it’s too early to make too many comments (although so far, so good--I'm really looking forward to making some art/having some fun). That said, one of the reasons I’ve avoided lenses wider than my Leica 8-18 (another lens that should be in the conversation) is that they’re generally not filter-compatible. Therefore, it’s ironic that the AoV on this is too wide for step-up rings, as even a 58-62 can be seen in the corners (I could of course crop if I wanted to alter the aspect ratio). I guess I’ll have to get yet another C-PL (or just hold one over the lens with my hand or rig something). Also, weather sealing would be nice, but it’s problematic to use any UWA in precip, as it’s hard to avoid getting droplets on the front element given the hood limitations due to the wide AoV (so why bother with the Frog Eye Coating?)… Anyway, this looks like a winner--121.7° vs. 107° (Leica @ 16mm EFL) is quite significant and I'm confident I can get some great use out of this lens, and it may well not be my last Laowa. Also, I ordered it directly from Venus and although it was initially out-of-stock, once it shipped (9 days later?), it was only a couple of days to get it via FedEx in the US (free delivery).

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  ปีที่แล้ว

      First, that Panasonic thing was a joke, no harm intended. Same thing can be said about Old lenses as they also use software to correct lenses in camera. For the price, Laowa makes better quality build, the only lacking is AF. I agree on filter on this lens, the AoV may be too wide to use thick filter, I may have some solutions to that, which I will be trying later.

    • @ddsdss256
      @ddsdss256 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Red35Photography OK, maybe I have a thin skin (but why? I'm not Panasonic, I only use a lot of their gear)... Anyway, I picked up a 58-72 step-up ring and the flange width takes it out of "hard vignette range" so I can use 72mm or larger filters with add'l step-ups, so not a problem. More importantly, I got out with the lens yesterday and was able to get a bunch of cool shots that would've been impossible without it (and I'm just getting started--the possibilities are endless) and the images look great on my 32" 4k Benq. I've yet to print any but I have no worries. If I didn't already have the Mitakon Speedmaster 25mm f/0.95, I'd immediately order the Argus 25mm, based on the build quality and performance of the 6mm. The Mitakon is all-metal and feels solid (just the right amount of aperture and focus ring resistance), but the latter has gotten loose. It still renders beautifully, but Laowa clearly builds a better lens for about the same (reasonable) price.

      I have a 17mm f1.8 too but I especially use it for night photography as I find it rendering images in such a too ‘flat’ way. Hence my 12-40 f2.8 where the sharpness is rather to my taste.
