I particularly like its soft mellow sound. I'm highly sensitive to noise and this instrument goes easy on the senses. I even find practicing it to be therapeutic!
The recorder certainly is a "real" instrument. As you may know by now, some of music history's greatest composers such as Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi wrote beautiful music for recorder, both solo and in ensembles. Furthermore, the recorder goes back hundreds of years earlier. One thing the students might find interesting is a scene in Shakespeare's "Hamlet" in which the recorder is mentioned: HAMLET: O, the recorders! let me see one . . . HAMLET: . . . Will you play upon this pipe? GUILDENSTERN: My lord, I cannot. HAMLET: 'Tis as easy as lying: govern these ventages with your fingers and thumb, give it breath with your mouth, and it will discourse most eloquent music. Look you, these are the stops.
The classroom always teaches on a plastic suprano which looks and feels cheap and is high pitched and annoying to listen to someone practicing on so thats why it gets a bad wrap.

Two excellent players, each of them for his/her specific instrument. Mr. Böhlen, particularly, stands out for his composure during the performance, unlike many recorder players who wriggle while they are playing. His composition "Suite for Flute Solo" is a true bravura piece. Thank you very much.
I just switched off the video because of his LACK of composure and excessive 'emotive movement'. What IS it with performers these days??? Why can't they just play the bloody instruments instead of indulging in this "je suis artiste" pantomime?? Look at Frans Brüggen.. he let the music do all the emoting - as it should be. Personally I blame them knowing that every performance is videoed and feeling they have to 'outwriggle' the competition to get market share e.g. standing - instead of sitting - in a circle, leering at each other and hopping around like deranged monkeys??

Anyhow, both of us express a similar feeling as for the way, the composure, utilzed by the wind instruments players. You should look at some other recorder players (but also bassoon and flute and oboe players) to decide that Mr. Böhlen is among the most proper ones. Moreover, what to say about many female players and how they are dressed, or better, undressed? I don't refer to barock or ancient ensembles, but to the romantic orchestras. The male players are choked by their full dresses, while their she-colleagues show abundant parts of their bodies. Maybe they prefer to be looked, rather than listened?
