    When you hear the 'chattering' sound like in this video, you should increase the speed on your rotary tool and the faster rotation will cause it to stay on the blade better and smoother instead of bucking it off. You can tell when you should increase the speed because of the chattering sound and feel like it is vibrating. It can be dangerous to operate at a less than optimal speed. Also, if your vision is of any worth to you than please invest 2 bucks or so for some safety googles. Its not the funnest thing in the world to have a glowing hot piece if steel flash up into your eye

    Dremel has a sharpening attachment that screws into the top of the dremel tool right over that grinding wheel. It allows you to keep the angle consistent along the entire edge. Also start from one edge and go all the way to the other, then pull off and repeat. Don't go back and forth or start in the middle. Thanks for the video

    I tried the "right" way with a stone, again and again, and got a decent edge after a lot of work. Then I tried it with my Dremel, and in less than five minutes my hatchet is razor sharp.

    For blades that are a little dull and for touch ups I prefer stones, but I love the Dremel for reprofiling and thinning of thick edges. For instance, bought a hatchet with too much 'meat' behind the edge, and used the tool to thin out the bevel some before finishing on stones to create a very sharp and functional garden tool. Also a great tool for knife makers.

      Thanks for this comment! I bought a cheap harbor freight hatchet and was going to use my Dremel for exactly this purpose. Now I know that is a good method

    Just dug through my collection o' bits and found myself something just like you have here in this video, this is gonna make cutting down my aluminum PC case edges down to a flat even surface soooo much easier than slowly forcing it down with a "metal"" cutting wheel surface. TYTYTYTY!!!!!

    • @deanpaczewitz8227
      @deanpaczewitz8227 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dremel makes an attachment for sharpening blades like lawn mower blades. You get a grinding stone and a guide that holds the tool at the correct angle. You still have to move the Dremel in the right direction along the blade.

    • @TheGibby13
      @TheGibby13 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If people aren't very comfortable with an angle grinder they will destroy the blade. Rotary tools spin much slower with a smaller surface area and better control for novice users

    I tried to sharped scissors with the end that looks like a tree shape, and I ended up ruining about 4 pairs of them. They won't cut through butter at all. I am really upset by this. The thought of having to go out and buy all new scissors. One is a $30. pair.

    • @blechtic
      @blechtic 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wouldn't use power tools for kitchen tools or scissors. Use a whetstone or special sharpening tools (by fiskars, for example) and put in some manual effort.

    • @EminoMeneko
      @EminoMeneko 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've already sharpened scissors and knives with Dremel and it works very well.
      How did you proceed?

    • @ronnibuck1504
      @ronnibuck1504 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you just need to hone the edge look up 'sharpening knives with a coffee cup'. Seriously, the ceramic base isn't glazed and will put a nice edge on scissors and knives that's good enough for most uses. I'm not suggesting this method is as good as quality stones and stropping but you can get your blades sharp enough to shave the hair on your arm in no time.

    • @inspire734
      @inspire734 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ronni, I do have enough cups.. I will try that. I hope to get the divits out of the blades now that the dremal made.

    • @rocki_bb
      @rocki_bb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      YOU made those divits WITH the dremel. Don't blame the tool, especially since you did it to FOUR pairs of scissors

He has a really strange accent for an American, I've only heard people talk like this on some TV shows, but I don't know where the accent is meant to come from as I've heard people from different countries talk like this. Is this an accent people put on, or is it from some region or something?

    Your going freehand for both tool & work? That's not dangerous, not at all. No chance of injury there, nope, not even the remotest chance of injury. Hopefully every kid sees this so they know the absolutely correct way to sharpen their ax. Kids need that kind of info, the correct way to sharpen their axes.

    • @paskapes
      @paskapes 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dremel is a freehanding tool.. If you cant handle it, you shouldn't be using it.

    • @TheBsavage
      @TheBsavage 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paskapes If I "can't handle it?" You're not very experienced, are you? [sounding official] "The Dremel is a freehand ...." I can handle a Dremel just fine. It makes a super shitty sharpener, but you're so clever you believed Dremel's bull. Plus and you're holding both tool AND work "freehand." I don't know what clown taught your shop class, if you even had one, but if you're dealing with low-wattage consumer-grade power tools like the Dremel, it might not be so bad. If the work is actually sharp you've increased your chances of injury several fold. If you work with the kinds of power tools I do, they'll kill you if you make the tiniest of errors. My sharpened tools are far less hazardous than my powered tools. They'll merely remove a digit or two if mishandled. But you're the big-guy power-tool handling expert. Be a dope on your own time. Don't demonstrate your bonehead maneuvers to kids who aren't as coordinated as you are. Making a video like that suggests your tool handling is good. You can do it, but it's dumb, dangerous, and if a kid gets hurt, you're the liable party too smart to even wear protective gear. That'll last until you play with something you're sure you've got control over, until you don't. I guess I should be happy with how experienced I am. It must suck to be you.

      @@paskapes It makes my life better knowing I've brightened your day just a little! Stay safe. Wearing gloves is good too. I've found you can do more work wearing gloves than you can without them, unless that work is really delicate, like neurosurgery, then the gloves don't help much. Cheers!
