It is VERY hard for anyone with a musical ear to NOT be impressed by really spectacular a cappella. VoicePlay has become my personal favorite, but there are three others you should check out... Pentatonix, Home Free, and Voctave. ALL of them are top tier. I'm not sure you caught the Louis Armstrong tribute from J None, but it was pretty special! Very fun reaction! I will watch for more a cappella reactions from you. If you DO go down that rabbit hole, I'll subscribe and be right there with you (and all the other Players, Home Fries, and Pentaholics!)
They are a wonderful rabbit hole to explore. The bass and founding member Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci has his own channel and does low bass covers. He released Carol of the Bells for this Christmas. It got over a million views in just 18 days. Will be here for anything VoicePlay or Geoff.
Glad you enjoyed this. VoicePlay is one of the big 3 acapella groups, along with HomeFree and Pentatonix. They are known as the theater kids of acapella. Bass singer Geoff Castelucci and beatboxer Layne Stein take turns with arrangements, Layne did this one. Geoff's wife, Kathy, is the production manager. Tenor Eli Jacobsen (bald) will help with lighting. Baritone/tenor Cesar De La Rosa is the newest member (wearing the scarf). Feature J. None is a former member, who left to join the US Navy, he will come back for guest spots occasionally when he is on leave. This song is from back in the 1950's, originally done by Louis Armstrong. Exploring the group further, you will see a few former members, and a number of guest singers. If you would like to see more, suggest their versions of Aerosmith's Dream On, "Oogie Boogie Song(The Nightmare Before Christmas), We Don't Talk About Bruno( Disney's Encanto), and Michael Jackson's Thriller.
This was introduced by Louis Armstrong back in 1952. The scatting was a tribute to Armstrong. The gentleman scatting is no longer a member of the band, but sings with them frequently, that's J None. He left to join/sing for the navy, and sings bass for them. As for VoicePlay, if you want funny, they've got funny. (Try their medley for We Don't Talk About Bruno or any of the Disney medleys). If you want heartbreak and beauty, try I Can't Make You Love Me. If you want epic, how about Dragonborn Comes? Don't think it's possible that an acapella group could ever do a rock classic? Listen to Nothing Else Matters. In the mood for Tennessee Whiskey? Their cover is not only melodically gorgeous, but the individual shots look like renaissance paintings. A visual feast. And always, always, top of the line musicality and a fresh, creative approach to every song they touch.
Voiceplay is known as the "theatre" kids if acapella. They are also fully independent - so they can follow their own creative direction! They do almost everything themselves. They have the widest genre range of all the acapella groups and gives every member a spotlight in their arrangements. You absolutely have to do more! ⚘️🕊
VoicePlay are such an amazing group, easily on par with better known groups like Pentatonix and Home Free. The reason you likely hadn't heard of them before now is that they are 100% independent artists, so everything you just saw and heard came entirely from them. Layne (the vocal percussionist) arranged it (in fact, it's the third time he's arranged this song for them), the video was shot in Pattycake Productions, which is more or less VoicePlay's home base, as it is owned by Layne and former VoicePlay baritone, Tony Wakim. They do everything except makeup/prosthetics, and the final audio mix themselves (Eli, the bald rock tenor, is a genius at lighting design). You'll have loads of fun with these guys; not only are they extraordinarily talented, but they have so much fun while they work! They all have a great sense of humor, and don't take themselves too seriously while still putting out extremely high quality work. And their videos are unparalleled in the acappella world, funded only by Patreon! These guys truly are gifts. And once you've had plenty of fun with VoicePlay, be sure and slide over to check out Geoff Castellucci's solo page- he's VoicePlay's bass vocalist, and a whole rabbithole unto himself. He has one of the deepest bass voices out there currently, but can also soar up into tenor ranges with his 5 octave range. He does covers (with instrumentation) on his solo page where he layers his vocals into incredible harmonies (you can really see his acappella background), and clones himself in the videos. You'll be hooked (and flabbergasted!) in no time!! You're going to have such a fun adventure!
I so enjoyed your reaction to Voiceplay. They are absolutely mind blowing. They can and do sing every genre including classical, pop, jazz, Broadway, Disney. If you want another silly one, try their version of Drunken Sailor. Arranged by Geoff with an original bridge. If you want to sob your heart out, go with their version of I Can't Make You Love Me. Subscribed in anticipation of more Voiceplay and Geoff. He did a bass version of Carol of the Bells this year.
I always love when I find a new person reacting to my very favorite group. You looked appropriately delighted, so I liked and subscribed hoping that you’ll cover more of them as well as checking Geoff’s solo channel. I first heard this song from Harry Connick Jr (and shortly thereafter by the Brian Setzer Orchestra). because I was unfamiliar with it, I did a little research and found out it was done first by the one and only Louis Armstrong. I really enjoyed the Satchmo improv that J did at the end. It’s a nice tribute to the original artist. They had a new toy for this video. They used a robotic arm camera for this so the camera moved and they looked where the camera. They did this song several years ago on their album called Peppermint Winter and it’s a different vibe. Maybe because I first heard it from Harry Connick Jr, but I’ve always thought this sounded like a New Orleans sound song and this really gives me that same feeling. With those the lyrics, it is a tad ominous. After all, it is a little strange that we are anxiously awaiting for this oddly dressed man to break into our homes one night per year!
Nice to find you through a VoicePlay reaction! Subscribing in hope of more. Perhaps give their newest a try? The developers of the game Warframe saw the cover VP did of “Sleeping in the Cold Below” from Warframe earlier in 2024 and asked them to put their spin on a song from the new Warframe 1999 update. So VoicePlay’s last song of 2024 is a ‘play’ on the game’s song “Party of a Lifetime” - a funkier version of the in-game Boy Band that appears to have caught something called TechnoRot. Anyway, VoicePlay’s cover slaps! Please consider checking it out.
Like your reaction 🙂 In your spare time you may want to do a TH-cam search for "hearing Geoff Castellucci for the first time." Then go back and look at your reaction. Voiceplay's "Hall of the Mountain King" is fun. Have you reviewed Home Free's "Man of Constant Sorrow?" yet?
Love Voiceplay and Geoff. Always fun.

Welcome to the Voice Play rabbit hole. You have a lot of great songs to listen to from them. They’re the best!
