Hey Will, thanks for posting this. With the help of this video and TXsuite I replaced a bad ecu in a 2005 9-3 that had a similar problem to yours. In my case the injector drivers on 2 cylinders would quit working after a long drive. Trionic CAN Flasher is great.

wysetech2000 thank you 😁 I appreciate that!!! These intermittent issue can work on the nurvs for sure than to add something new was a rollercoaster . This car seems to be a gm in many ways
That would figure being Saturn is also a GM product, I wonder if they actually carry the SAME MODEL NUMBER?? but thinking about it I guess it don’t make much difference, cuz running into a SATURN at the wrecking yard is about the same thing as running into a SAAB or a UNICORN and BIGFOOT lol… well, maybe not quit that bad, but close
It is great to see your persistence on this problem. I feel even if you make a loss on a job like this you are more likely to keep the customer. If you send a customer away to another you will probably loose them forever.
Great work on these two videos, nice diagnosis, info, research and repair. Helpful folks at the forums - you should share these videos with them, I'm sure they'll help others too!
Thanks for a great video. I have a '07 SAAB 9-3 2.0T which has numerous little problems but is a great car, worth keeping. Your video gives me hope! Is there a way to use the OBD to check the ECU while it is in place? Does the ECU self-diagnose and report?
Really good thorough video. As a 93 owner I'm going to be buying diagnostic tools for making my own spare keys and such and like to see what tool can do what tasks
thank you for the compliments! Very valid point, a quick google search had me thinking the same and later verified you are 100% correct its a very week link
and because it’s a weak link other mechanics snatch then up and stock pile then, this I know cuz CAN’T FIND ONE and i’ve got the same problem EXACTLY!! It sucks! cuz i won’t ebay one too much bad luck
Great video Will and the good thing is it's already broke so trying something new you don't hardly lose anything but can gain a lot of knowledge PLUS when you turn the key and it starts & runs great it makes you feel great! Thanks for sharing Will and again great case study!!
thank you, very true! the added bonus was the customer is in a tight spot. when I mentioned this option i could feel the relief :) was a win win for both of us. great feeling
@@robinsonsauto hi... I own a 2006 Saab 9-3 with these exact symptoms... I just spent $600 on new coils. I was wondering if it's possible to re-program/re-flash my existing ecu or if once its cooked its cooked? Also if theres anyway of knowing if a used ecu is still working before you by it?
Thank you for taking the time and watching, your welcome anytime! glad you enjoyed. it was a fun one for me as well, a little stressful at first but very rewarding
So cool that u were able to do that ecu swap at your shop with a little research and at such low cost. Musta been a good feeling when it worked out for u. I was just watching your kia sedona press in wheel bearing vid from a bit ago. That astro press kit is nice i gotta get one of those. Happy easter
sure was a great feeling when I turned the key and it started up, with a great sense of relief! the guys on the forum i could tell were 100% confident however there is still that first time doubt lol yes that astro kit works great! if you get one be sure to lubricate the threads before every use and it will last much longer. thanks man happy Easter to you to
First off great video...an 2nd that was awesome of trionic folks helping u out. Very rare u find that. Thank u for sharing. Learned so much in just 2 vids. Pls keep them coming
Wow excellent Will that is pretty slick I like that. May need to add that to my arsenal as I know them ecu's are hard to find because they are failure prone
Thanks! I'm about to clone mine to have a backup. Is the adapter type (ELM27 etc etc) the option you chose because of that OBDlink cable you got? Or how do you know which one to pick? I have the same question about choosing COM10. How do I know which to choose? Or does buying the OBDlink cable you got mean that that is what I should pick?
Cool video! If my 93' ecu craps out, i can find a close match and copy/flash to new unit as long its readable, and following forum advise as well as your video. I always thought only tech2 could do this, wtf. Cheers Will
Excellent tutorial and thanks for not glossing over anything! Does this mean I don't have to match ECU numbers? So if my ECU is a Saab 9-3 2007, I could get a used ECU from maybe a 2001 9-3 I and overwrite my ECU data onto it?
Thanks for your video! I have replaced my faulty ECU with a matching number ECU. But the engine doesn't want to turn on. Could it be that i have to programm it even though it's exactly the same P/N? (The previous ECU had a mapping from Hirsch Performance, do think that could have something to do with that?)
@@ericappel4576 yes I fixed it. I just put the correct program again and then I needed to bring it to the saab dealer so he could "marry" the ECU to the car with a tech2. (it needs to have the same VIN number) the car wouldn't recognize it otherwise because of the immobilizer key wouldn't match.
i big thanks for this video, i had a 2003 saab 9-3 sport with a 2.0t that had p1682 and p0606 pcm fault and i did what you did and it worked!!! no more codes and it started up and runs no issues!! thanks again!!
AWESOME , I have turned to the forums my self in the years , Some folks burn there nights to make things happen ..Most of the time I find there stuff works .. Great job will !!
Great little trick. So say I have the old computer, and a replacement computer from the same car and same model year and the Amazon USB to car data port adapter, I should be able to reprogram the old computer from the new one? Is the software free?
thank you, honesty i have only ever done OEM level flashing this was the first aftermarket. OEM level equipment is very hard to mess up you will find, its a great little unit
I too used the same ECU (55353231) to replace my failed one, in my 07 9-3 2.0T and it is working great so far (took one 10 mile run). However, I did pull the main and MCP files and from the original ECU and saved them in a folder on my laptop, for future reference. If both files save successfully, they are good files. FYI, I read this on a Saab forum- www.trionictuning.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8094. I don';t know if you saw this, but it might help viewers. These guys are cracker jacks at this stuff! Kudos to them! here is the info- "First you need a spare T8 ECU, TrionicCANFlasher and a working Adapter cable. You don't need a TechII. It can be any Trionic 8 ECU, no matter what part number, model year, engine model or car(Saab, Opel, Cadillac) it is from. Only exception seem to be XWD cars, they all seem to use ECUs with part number ending in 225. Be careful with Opel Z22 ECUs. They don't work even tho they look the same. They are missing some circuit elements related to boost control I think and they are running GMPT-E 15 and later GMPT-E 16 firmware and not Trionic 8 firmware! Also be aware that Ebay and probably other places like that. They have a bunch of broken ECUs for sale. I'd recommend buying it only if the seller accepts returns." Great video!
Hi, it's an awesome video. I need to change the ECM of a 2007 SAAB 9-3. 2.0 T, I have the 55565020. Could you please help me cause I don't know what to do. Thanks.
Really nice work! You mentioned there was a way to do the same swap on the bench with the proper adapter - I can't find what that adapter is, do you have any more information about that? thanks
Thanks for your upload. An eye opener for me. I love my 9-3 2.0T and I’m glad I came across your channel because I am tackling this project today. But I have the same part numbered ECU as my replacement. I am sure I can follow the same steps and it marry the same way?.?.? Just wondering because I have no access to a Tech 2?
The Trionic Tuning site seems to be no longer active. I managed to find a site that had the trionic8 suite software posted for download. 3 Questions : 1) PLEASE ADVISE > what cable is used to bench flash the ecu ? 2) for a reoccurring P2138 has anyone here found the the ECU at fault ? ( 2004 9-3 ) 3) Robinsons Auto is there a way to contact you directly if I have a particular question in my effort ?
Eric Corse 😁👍 yes that was my thoughts exactly however on the other hand I didn't have much to loose at the time and that Saab community made me feel at ease
I have an ECU 55353231, I need to put it in a Saab, 9-3, 2.0L, Turbo, 2007. You can help me with the good data files mcp.bin and good data.bin. I hope your help and thanks for sharing. Greetings from Mexico
The place I would have stumbled as far as diagnosis goes is the question as to where the intermittent short to ground was happening. I would probably have tried to disconnect the injector driver at the time it was shorted and watched to see if the bad ground disappeared, but trying to capture that exact moment would have been time consuming and tricky. I can imagine many would swap or replace the injector before going after the driver.
spelunkerd I can see that happening as well and wish I could have captured that as you mentioned it would have been a great capture and solid proof of concept, the only thing that kept me from going that route was seeing multiple injectors at times energized and at other times only one injector. in addition the characteristics of the field collaps looked spot on when it was acting up. I would think the voltage spike would be different, but more than anything what convinced me was the erratic behavior, but I agree a bad injector could cause some crazy things as well. Thanks for sharing
My ECU failed and I found one at the savage yard. I sent it away to be reprogrammed. The problems are still there. It dumps fuel and smokes badly every now and then. Could the new program have programed in bad information? Bill
Hello, I need you help!!!! I have a B207R with 55353231 ECU. Its running rough. We checked everything and all are working good except the rough running (at idle and when accelerating to 3000rpm for example) and misfires at idle. Before with the faulty ECU you had misfires and rough running and now nothing, right?? Also, i don't have smoke from the exhaust and no smell of gas.
hi great video i have a 2006 Saab 93 Vector it idles rough engine light is on i brought a cheap code reader it comes up P0606 code here in Australia they want a $1000 for a refurbished one would you know the best way to go about fixing it
i’ve ran into the same problem but i can’t afford all the equipment for this car but i’d like to replace the ECU , but in my local area there are absolutely none, if you have access to another ECU for a 2005 9-3 2.0t I don’t really care if it’s reprogrammed from the other model number or an original numbered one, i’ve checked the fuel injectors and things and it’s doing exactly what you said to the T, i thought the smoking problem was left over residuals from a SEAFOAAM TREATMENT, i did on it, but it did it before and actually spelled like it was leaking gas but it wasn’t, and it’s got progressively worse and don’t want to get stranded, Can we work something out? I’ve got money to buy it, and i don’t play games like people on OFFERUP, and I won’t waste your time, anything you can do would be appreciated. Thank you, R
Got a question for you. I am thinking of doing same procedure to my saab 9-3 2006. I need some clarification about ELM327 v.1.3. Is that a software or a hardware? I already ordered the OBD Link SX from amazon and will download the software from txtsuit. Is there anything else that I need?
Hey I was wondering if you can still get anymore of these & flash it to work for my car? I have the original one for ya plus however much just let me know, I appreciate it & thank you for the video 👌🏼
This video just pinpointed whats wrong with my 2006 93. Thank you so much for posting this. One question i have and maybe i missed in the videos is if i take my ecu off and find the exact same model. Can o flash the ecu using a tech 2?
Hi . I have a problem with Trionic can flasher. -Opening connection -Open called in trionic8 -Open failed in trionic8 Please help me. I have device OBD2 PL2303. Can be done SAAB 9-3 2.0t 2008 ECU cloning with this device?
hi , i installed the trionicanflash on my windows 10 and also on a windows 7 laptop. i am getting a no connection problem. did you have to do some work with windows to get it to work? i went on the forums, but i did not see where i can post a question. thank you.
I removed the ECM and shipped it out, it came back, car is running but the injector codes are still pending, along with knock sensor code...I am frustrated and don't know what to do.. could my injectors be bad>? ..I tested the resistance and 12.7 out of all of them
I have same issue need to drive 50 miles to get the clone is there anyway to bypass ecu fault to keep it from flooding? I thought disable the turbo run in 4 banger mode
hello my name is john and i would like to know where you get the sofeware for the programming to get my new ecm to work with my 2003 saab 93 i been watching your videos just to know how to do it myself if you can give me the site you got it from if you can help me
very useful and interesting video, can you help me find links to purchase a connection cable like the one used in the video (compatible with Trionic CAN Flasher and with saab ECU). Thank you
I have been trying to flash my new used ecu same process as you.. I have a newer hp laptop with windows 10 and i bought one of those cheap elm 327 usb obd2...i installed everything no problem t8 suite and canflasher and all drives... the elm usb connects through a dtc app and reads codes no problem but through canflasher it like starts to read and immediately says disconnected or something like that. Ive tried everything i can changing settings and everything do you think its the windows 10 is to new or the elm clone i got is probably just to cheap to work? Cuz i have a macbook too but i havent tried it on that and ive already paid to get my computer swapped twice! and this last one has a p0300 so i really wannt just do this myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated
I have a qrestion about buying a used ECU for my saab if it would be a good idel to try and use it, are do I have to reprogram it before I do that? Cause I see it worked out for you
im sure it can be easily repaired however for me it would need to be something staring me in the face to fix it lol like a gaping solder joint or popped top cap, other wise it would take me forever
I tried to repair Aa 2006 chevy malibu ECM, pulled bacxk cover but it was potted in epoxy or a layer of clear epoxy or silicone (I forget now) it had sudden death when hot issues, which I diagnosed with heat-gun and cool water. it would randomly act up and die if you left it idle with ac on hot days....
I have a 08 saab 93 2.0t w/error code P0340 im replace the crankshaft position sensor.but the light come on again i noted it doesn't have ground signal those wires coming from ECU it's could be that have some problem in that ECU?
Woow men it's amazing. Appreciate the video. I think I have the same problem. When I connect t the scan I have the P0201, 0202, 0203. I will try this. I have a Saab 2007 2.0 turbo. Do you think this can work for me?
My guess is the output driver solder joints were fatigued and thermal bridging. Too bad you didn't open it up and take a close look at the circuit board. Hell, you got a state of the art scope, you probably could have repaired the board.

Is there a way to use the OBD to check the ECU while it is in place? Does the ECU self-diagnose and report?
Really good thorough video. As a 93 owner I'm going to be buying diagnostic tools for making my own spare keys and such and like to see what tool can do what tasks
You never disappoint, I ALWAYS learn something from your efforts. Thank you sir.
Thats great to hear :) im glad the efforts are recognized. your welcome anytime
Very impressive nice job. There is a reason why the ECU (original to vehicle) is hard to find most likely they were problematic
thank you for the compliments!
Fantastic job diagnosing the issue, fixing the prob and doing it for very little cost in parts!! Thumbs up!
thank you for the positive comments man!! means a lot
5yrs later still a good detailed video!!
It means a lot to hear that you find the video still useful after 5 years!
@@robinsonsauto would you mind providing me your phone number... I hate to ask but would really appreciate your expert advice and have a few questions
This was great case study. Thank you for taking your time to share your knowledge with us. Cheers
Drews Auto thank you for the compliments! Can't thank them enough great group of guys. Will do
Really neat the forum fellas helped you. There are really some good people out there!
Wow excellent Will that is pretty slick I like that. May need to add that to my arsenal as I know them ecu's are hard to find because they are failure prone
Robinson's Auto Diagnostics thank you! Your feedback means a lot man. It amazes me, Makes me wonder what else is out there!
Cheers Will
Typey1 it's a wonderful thing right 😉👍
Excellent tutorial and thanks for not glossing over anything! Does this mean I don't have to match ECU numbers? So if my ECU is a Saab 9-3 2007, I could get a used ECU from maybe a 2001 9-3 I and overwrite my ECU data onto it?
Great that you kept looking for the solution, hope you are able to charge for your time
Thanks for your video!
I have replaced my faulty ECU with a matching number ECU. But the engine doesn't want to turn on. Could it be that i have to programm it even though it's exactly the same P/N? (The previous ECU had a mapping from Hirsch Performance, do think that could have something to do with that?)
Did you fix this problem?
Great job will !!
thank you Shawn! lots of great people out there dedicating there time to help others. its an awesome thing
Great little trick. So say I have the old computer, and a replacement computer from the same car and same model year and the Amazon USB to car data port adapter, I should be able to reprogram the old computer from the new one? Is the software free?
Excellent job.
Not done any ECU flashing kinda craping myself to get into it.
I do like your scope.
thank you, honesty i have only ever done OEM level flashing this was the first aftermarket. OEM level equipment is very hard to mess up you will find, its a great little unit
You made it look easy, well done.
Kudos to them! here is the info-
"First you need a spare T8 ECU, TrionicCANFlasher and a working Adapter cable. I'd recommend buying it only if the seller accepts returns."
Great video!
Excellent video part1 and 2, thank you for us learning!!
Hi, it's an awesome video. I need to change the ECM of a 2007 SAAB 9-3. 2.0 T, I have the 55565020. Could you please help me cause I don't know what to do. Thanks.
I need help my self
Wanna say thank you. This worked great. I was done messing with this car.
3 Questions :
1) PLEASE ADVISE > what cable is used to bench flash the ecu ?
2) for a reoccurring P2138 has anyone here found the the ECU at fault ? ( 2004 9-3 )
3) Robinsons Auto is there a way to contact you directly if I have a particular question in my effort ?
That’s very unfortunate. Glad the software is still available. I’d be monitoring all related data pids. Pedal and throttle body position sensors
Excellent video, liked and subscribed. I just got P0245 today and low boost. No injector codes yet but I'm expecting to do this same procedure soon.
18:47 Hallelujah moment!!! Thank you for this video. You sound like a good man/dad.
First, Cool I expect that was a little scary kind of like messing with your computer registers.
Eric Corse 😁👍 yes that was my thoughts exactly however on the other hand I didn't have much to loose at the time and that Saab community made me feel at ease
Great info !!!!
So a elm 327 and sx cable is needed?
Bill
Great Video Wil ! Enjoyed watching it. 👍💪👊
DiagnoseDan thank you Dan!!! Your compliment means a lot! Thanks for taking the time and stopping by
Hello, I need you help!!!!
Thank you! I repared my car using this video. And thanks to guys who creat the software.
Next job is maintaining the Space Shuttle. One very happy car owner. That software sure takes getting used to.
Tom OConnor lol 😂 we just never know. That was my very first attempt, but I did have help so I guess it could be more challenging otherwise
hi great video i have a 2006 Saab 93 Vector it idles rough engine light
is on i brought a cheap code reader it comes up P0606 code here in
Australia they want a $1000 for a refurbished one would you know the
best way to go about fixing it
Had the same issue with the kids 2003 9-3 arc. Just got done with it and it worked. Good video
I need help with mine
i’ve ran into the same problem but i can’t afford all the equipment for this car but i’d like to replace the ECU , but in my local area there are absolutely none, if you have access to another ECU for a 2005 9-3 2.0t I don’t really care if it’s reprogrammed from the other model number or an original numbered one, i’ve checked the fuel injectors and things and it’s doing exactly what you said to the T, i thought the smoking problem was left over residuals from a SEAFOAAM TREATMENT, i did on it, but it did it before and actually spelled like it was leaking gas but it wasn’t, and it’s got progressively worse and don’t want to get stranded, Can we work something out? I’ve got money to buy it, and i don’t play games like people on OFFERUP, and I won’t waste your time, anything you can do would be appreciated.
Thank you, R
Loved this repair! Favorite so far....
thank you :) im glad the efforts payed off
Got a question for you. I am thinking of doing same procedure to my saab 9-3 2006. I need some clarification about ELM327 v.1.3. Is that a software or a hardware? I already ordered the OBD Link SX from amazon and will download the software from txtsuit. Is there anything else that I need?
Love the persistance. you did great
Hey I was wondering if you can still get anymore of these & flash it to work for my car? I have the original one for ya plus however much just let me know, I appreciate it & thank you for the video 👌🏼
This video just pinpointed whats wrong with my 2006 93. Thank you so much for posting this. One question i have and maybe i missed in the videos is if i take my ecu off and find the exact same model. Can o flash the ecu using a tech 2?
Hi . I have a problem with Trionic can flasher.
-Opening connection
-Open called in trionic8
-Open failed in trionic8
Please help me.
I have device OBD2 PL2303.
Can be done SAAB 9-3 2.0t 2008 ECU cloning with this device?
hi , i installed the trionicanflash on my windows 10 and also on a windows 7 laptop. i am getting a no connection problem. did you have to do some work with windows to get it to work? i went on the forums, but i did not see where i can post a question. thank you.
Do you have any video on how to program a new/replacement ABS Mod ECU (TRW) unit on 2008 - 2011 SAAB 93 Aero V6 Turbo XWD ?
Hats off to you, sir. We're glad it worked :)
I removed the ECM and shipped it out, it came back, car is running but the injector codes are still pending, along with knock sensor code...I am frustrated and don't know what to do.. could my injectors be bad>?
..I tested the resistance and 12.7 out of all of them
Was checking out the scope on Amazon but needed more info your video showed it to be a great scope price is good also
I have same issue need to drive 50 miles to get the clone is there anyway to bypass ecu fault to keep it from flooding? I thought disable the turbo run in 4 banger mode
hello my name is john and i would like to know where you get the sofeware for the programming to get my new ecm to work with my 2003 saab 93 i been watching your videos just to know how to do it myself if you can give me the site you got it from if you can help me
very useful and interesting video, can you help me find links to purchase a connection cable like the one used in the video (compatible with Trionic CAN Flasher and with saab ECU). Thank you
Just go to Amazon, like he said
Second part even better. Thanks again sir!!!!!!!
:) thank you! your welcome anytime
Hi I want to ask u I change my ecu in my 93 2004 to new ecu then I have to program it can I do it without tec 2 ? Only in laptop and this can help me
I’ve been eyeing that micsig tablet for awhile and I noticed recently an automotive focused version just popped up. It’s the AT01104
I have a qrestion about buying a used ECU for my saab if it would be a good idel to try and use it, are do I have to reprogram it before I do that? Cause I see it worked out for you
Que tal amigo, disculpa que cable o interfaz ocupas para que detecte la ecu del saab
I wonder if the ECU's are potted inside, or if they can be repaired easily
im sure it can be easily repaired however for me it would need to be something staring me in the face to fix it lol like a gaping solder joint or popped top cap, other wise it would take me forever
I have a 2007 Saab 93 2.0T same exact issues. where do I find another ECU to flash?
I have a 08 saab 93 2.0t w/error code P0340 im replace the crankshaft position sensor.but the light come on again i noted it doesn't have ground signal those wires coming from ECU it's could be that have some problem in that ECU?
can u please share us your good setings to reprogram my saab 93 2004.. already have issues and the display show ECU NOT PROGRAMED
Fantastic video my friend. Did you need to know any security key to the ecu data off?
Woow men it's amazing. Appreciate the video. I think I have the same problem. When I connect t the scan I have the P0201, 0202, 0203. I will try this. I have a Saab 2007 2.0 turbo. Do you think this can work for me?
Did you fix it ?
My guess is the output driver solder joints were fatigued and thermal bridging. Too bad you didn't open it up and take a close look at the circuit board. Hell, you got a state of the art scope, you probably could have repaired the board.
