It's great! And for anyone who hasn't tried yet, don't worry about how perfect it is,because you will improve with every basket.I love my first lopsided, awkwardly stitched basket, because I have improved with such progress, that I will never be able to recreate that first beautiful imperfect one.
I just found your channel and love it. I just started making baskets, rag and coiled rope for now. I’m sure this is not as easy as you make it look, lol, but I’m am excited to source out some supplies and start my first pine needle basket.
Oh my god................is there anythink you cant do !!!!!!!!!! Loved this series.....i buy all this stuff.its everywhere in my home....ikea...i havent a craft bone in my body.but so admire those talented souls like youxxxxx
Thanks Susie! I took a class at our local nursery and became obsessed with pine needle basketry. I don't do anything fancy but I love the process of working with the needles. xxoo
This is so cool! I wanna make this next time I go camping! I always keep craft stuff in my camping box. I am going to try and do this when I camp this summer.
Wow. Have watched a number of basket videos. This is the BEST "beginner" video I've seen & the way I will begin! My grandmother used to weave baskets & I've wanted to learn for SUCH a long time! Have some Longleaf pine needles I gathered on a trip to Florida. Then once I've figured it out, want to play with "shorter" needles because that's what's local. Will see how it goes. Many thanks!!
So glad I've inspired you to get started. I LOVE this craft! It is too labor intensive to use for craft shows, except for the occasional 'feature' item, but I get such satisfaction out of making pine needle items, especially if they are destined to become gifts. I try to use needles that are about 7 inches long or so, although I've used needles as short as 4 inches with success. In fact, before we moved my mama out of the family home and into assisted living, I gathered enough pine needles from her short-needle tree to make a sweet little lidded basket with a carved crystal rock for a handle. Glad I did it because the new owners had all the trees and plants pulled out in preparation to bulldoze the houses. Time marches on... xxoo
So, did you ever make a pine needle basket? if you want to use the shorter needles and you're getting stuck, just send me a message and I can help you out. I made a basket for my mother using very small needles, maybe 4 inches in length. ☺️
this was so helpful and comprehensive, thank you so much for your tutorials!! I've always been curious about making baskets out of pine needles, I'm going to start collecting them to weave!
Bo Hi Bo! i'm so glad that you found this tutorial to be helpful. I love doing this craft because you create something out of nothing. A little pine needle basket or tray is the sort of thing you can give as a gift that people are generally in awe of when they find out that you made it. If you end up having any questions don't hesitate to message me. 🧜🏻♀️❤️🦄
+Carol Radabac This craft is amazingly easy and so cheap to do, yet you end up with something nice to use as a gift and also kind of different and interesting. xxoo
You really explain this well, offering advice as to the reasoning behind what you are doing. It's become a rare quality these days. When I get a chance to start making these, I'll name them "Coyote Coils".
+Across The Pond Please try this craft - it's relaxing, cheap, and produces the most lovely and useful things. If you have questions, TH-cam has tons of tutorials, and you can always ask me. I'm not an expert but I'll be happy to help, if I can. xxoo

You are such a sweet lady. l love your video and watching you work. You are so informative and I have finally learned how to do this! I am looking forward to each video you post. Thank you so much. God bless.
Thank you Judy I needed to hear that today. I'm a little slow on the videos right now, but I'll catch up. I always feel better when I'm making videos! xxoo
Cheryl Coyote when I try this I will show you. You give so much info I did not know or even know how to start. In this area of Louisiana there are Native Americans that make baskets and they are pricey for good reason. I have watched other videos like this but I like your down to earth approach best. Thank you so much.
I love your videos. I am a 65 yr old and would love to make a basket for a grand daughter who is expecting her first baby later this summer. I would love to make it for her and put a few things in it for her and baby as a gift...Any ideas would be appreciated, as this is a new craft for me.Thank you smiles Blessings to you
Paula Brown Hi Paula! What an excellent idea! You could make a tray, place gift items in it in a nest of excelsior, and tie it up with cellophane. The simplest basket with sides would be a cylinder shape. If you have specific questions email me at dearangryexwife@gmail.com. 🧜🏻♀️❤️🦄
Hello Cheryl, Thank you for your great videos. My question is after finishing the bottom of a basket and the coil is starting up the side, how do you prevent it from going inwards? I have only made one basket so far, it is very small and I didn't run into that problem with it. Thank you
ncredbird cox I will make another video to show how to shape the sides of the basket. Essentially you control the slope of the basket by positioning the coil. If you want a cylindrical basket you start by pushing tbe coil upward and taking a stitch. On the next stitch you push the coil further until it is sitting directly on top of the round below as opposed to directly beside it. For a sloped basket you position the coil about halfway up the side of the round below. It will make more sense when you see it. 🧜🏻♀️❤️🦄
Cheryl Coyote thank you!! I think I get the idea you describe but I would enjoy seeing you do it. I'd really love to learn this. I'm actually going to get supplies this weekend to give a go at starting as you did here. Hopefully I'll have gotten it down well enough to follow you on the rest when you post the video. Again thank you
Cheryl Coyote yay!! You should. I think things like this made by hand and the getting if being able to look at your accomplishment is a lost art. We seen to rely on the ability to go by things and waste so much of our own abilities. I love to take what nature provides us and make things that we both need and use daily. It's also taking me back my roots. I'm losing my elders that know this kind of art and it made me happy to see your video showing its not only my elders I can learn from, so thank you for that. I really hope to see you make more videos on this and other things you may know. Think it's amazing you are willing to teach others things that are important and fun. My daughters are even wanting to learn this basket making as well so it's turned into a family event that blesses us with more family time together!!
Actually, you don't use much. I'd guess a strand for every five linear inches. Generally you split the raffia into narrower strands so one strand as it comes from the package yields 2-3 working strands. Try to find the bulk, glycerine treated raffia. You can also buy the untreated and treat if yourself by soaking in glycerine and water. You can use all manner of cordage to make the baskets - hemp, sewing thread, dental floss, yarn, crochet cotton. I'm going to experiment with using fiber from my palm tree fronds. Have fun!
Yes, that should do, although I usually buy it in the big bulky bags where it's a big hank bunched up and shoved in the bag. I don't know how many strands are in it but it goes a long, long way. I've seen fancier raffia in nice packaging but it's always has far less material than the big bulk bags I buy. Do you make videos? I'd like to see what you end up with. xxoo
Cheryl Coyote No I don't make videos but once I get started I will post to my Twitter if you do Twitter. My Twitter is @catgirl45346 . Thanks for helping me out I hope I will be able to try my hand at this.
Cheryl Coyote question i have the supplies needed to work on this project but my needles are still green would you recomend washing like how you did your needles?
Tsmfs your pine needle basket making..very good tutorial, really enjoyed watching this..Have a great evening and the rest of the week..GB 💠🌷🌸🌹🌸🌷💠🌷🌸🌹🌸🌷💠⭕❌⭕❌⭕❌⭕😃
Yes, absolutely. I have used live needles in the past successfully. The one drawback is that live needles dry out and shrink a little bit, causing your project to eventually feel loose, especially if it is a basket as opposed to a flat mat or coaster. The Fix? Mod Podge! After your project has dried out, and the needles have turned brown, you can coat it with Mod Podge and restore rigidity. Additionally, this causes the project to be shiny.
I found this listing on Amazon - www.amazon.com/Super-Moss-Raffia-Bagged-Natural/dp/B006GKCFS8/ref=sr_1_6?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1475904497&sr=1-6&keywords=raffia. xxoo
MOMS Mushrooms Jody Foster Great questions! If you work with dried Pineneedles you will want to soak them until they are pliable, anywhere from 12 to 24 hours. Yes, you can work with fresh green Pineneedles but once they dry the lacing will become loose and the piece might feel a little sloppy. I have never had a problem with molding.
