  • new castle fire dept located in ky. hosted a live propane tank fire with other fire dept in Henry County. we practiced putting out the fire and looks like one side had a little problem and a saftey line had to be used by a instructor.

    With a fire like this, it is extremely hard to put out. You have the spraying fuel, with usually no way to turn it off. These men did the right thing, no matter what, KEEP THE TANK COOL otherwise you will have a massive and deadly explosion. then find a way to control and extinguish the fire, and turn off the gas (if you can).

      What you don't see is the guy holding the cut off valve. Those gas pipes are though the tank..so it's never pressurized.

    • @TEMPLE7D
      @TEMPLE7D ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d also argue the tank did the right thing too. Pressure relief valve blowing out the excess fuel and pressure instead of outright blowing up. (Usually the tank does this when it’s being heated up by another source).

    the hotter steel gets the weaker it becomes. which then in turn explodes with LPG. cooling the tank allows for a controlled burn with out explosion.

    Why are they spraying water on the tank? Is it to warm it up and keep the pressure high? The release of pressure should make the tank frosty cold, no?

    • @barnettrp
      @barnettrp 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are trying to keep the liquid propane from boiling. When it boils, it expands violently and the whole thing goes up in a ball of fire.

    • @nathanflett6427
      @nathanflett6427 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't expand violently as far as I understand. The explosion results from the tank wall rupturing with the tank still being under pressure. The fuel then explodes/burns in a large fire ball. The rupture is usually caused by weakening of the tank wall caused by heat from flames impinging onto the surface of the tank.

    • @LeifOfWilsonCreek
      @LeifOfWilsonCreek 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The pressure will vary with temperature, down to its atmospheric boiling point at -40 degF. The tank is made to withstand the pressure and keep it a liquid so it doesn't blow up in typical usage. Releasing that much pressure, the temperature will drop far below 32 degF, and the water will warm it back up, increasing the pressure. The flame seems to be several feet away from the tank, and separated by a cloud of extremely cold propane. I still don't understand the purpose of the water. Perhaps they're trying to put out the flame? However, they're spraying the tank, not the flame. Are they trying to keep the pressure in the tank up so the flame stays far away from the tank?

  • @LukeL007

    Many years ago a man committed suicide by driving full speed into a 30,000 gallon tank. It did not explode and instead he waked out climbed into the trunk and closed the lid. It burned for 24 hours and the FD simply kept spraying water on the tank. It was the safest way to prevent a massive fireball.

    Can't say I understand the strategy here. Obviously spraying lots of cold water on the hot tanks is good, but how is that improved by going closer and closer as opposed to increasing the danger to the firefighters if it blows?

    • @RichardJaehnigen
      @RichardJaehnigen  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Argus by cooling the tank they are making the liquid inside cooler and not change over to gas. This will decrease pressure, cool the outside as well, and stop a potentially dangerous explosion from the gas that was made from the heat. Slowly walking towards it was to simulate it gradually cooling enough to turn a valve off to shut off the fire. Hope that made sense, btw I’m not a expert! I believe this is the best way to explain it.

      Richard Jaehnigen what valve are you going to turn when the fire is out the top ? Of day the side that had a hole? You train the fire guys on basis of what diles to turn and what way I hope so

    • @RichardJaehnigen
      @RichardJaehnigen  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Moving earth this training simulation is for a LP delivery truck, they have multiple emergency shut off valves if I remember correctly. It has been 6 years since I’ve done this and I haven’t been very involved in trainings with my fire department. I think their is a valve behind the cab, under the truck, on the back by the hose reel, and that’s where we were going I think!

    • @movingearth3726
      @movingearth3726 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard Jaehnigen understandable in my if the fire is coming out of a hose is the only way that would work but you would have to get other sispific valve better off keeping it cool and moving everyone away let alone I'm extremely surprised someone hasnt come up with a fire supressed gel for them tankers yet to be honest

    je pense que cette exercice est comment se protéger et non comment éteindre la flamme. une flamme soufflée à 1 mètre de la buse ne présente aucun danger .il faut surtout pas l éteindre ,on veille à refroidir la citerne et la zone environnante puis on isole , si possible , l alimentation en propane et laisser le propane se consommer.

      By going from narrow stream to wide stream while walking up to the tank helps keep heat off the crew. The whole point is to simulate Turing the valve off on the tank to shut the fire off. Plus that is a cut away of a tank.

    • @3oranges4
      @3oranges4 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RichardJaehnigen to avoid BLEVE....That's the correct thing...
      BLEVE means BOILING LIQUID EXPANSION VAPOUR EXPLOSION .....When a fire starts in LIQUIFIED PETROLEUM GAS aka LPG ....THE FUEL is in liquid state....As the container gets fire the liquid fuel starts to boil...And vapour starts to build up inside the container....As more heat absorbed....Means....More exposed to fire,then the more more and vapour builds up and the pressure inside the container increases...If it sustains....The vapour make deformations in the container and reaches to a moment so that that the vapour fuel explodes through the weaker point of the container ....And explodes with high pressure... flame ...Heat...And bursting of the container...That's what BLEVE....THE boiling liquid first expands ....Produces vapour and then vapour explodes....Boiling liquid expansion vapour explosion....Ie,BLEVE. In this video the guys r trying to cool down the container so that the vapour build up can be controlled....And container can be cooled....
      But most of the time if the flaming vent is at the top of the vessel then the chances of BLEVE is very less...still cooling is needed one...But if the vent is at the bottom...And it's getting ignited from there....Then flame itself make the heat source for boil the liquid fuel ....Just like a pan on a hot plate......And ends up in BLEVE faster....Anyway BLEVE is a disastrous situation...
