We live in Nederland, CO and we only get ONE SHOT at growing stuff as our frost free is ONLY June 10 through Sept 10, but we LOVE your show. We have never been so entertained watching 2 people eating watermelon in our lives. Thanks for the laughs and the grow-how!

I agree determinate tomatoes are for our climate. Get them in and get them done before the Nothing like a yellow meated melon. That was my daddy's favorite.

Love heirlooms, the flavor is good plus there are some cool stories behind some varieties and seed saving. This yr has been horrible for my tomatoes so next yr I will definitely be adding hybrids in my garden for disease resistance and production. Especially the ones you all did the taste test on. OMG that watermelon!!! Stop it!!! LOL

Yep, as Greg has explained I grow some heirlooms as a special treat but I also grow some hybrids because they're more reliable.

Hope you guys see this comment. Janosik is a yellow watermelon you should try. It’s an heirloom variety from Poland. Got the seeds from Baker Creek. Been growing them 4 years now here in MN. 80 day variety. Packet says 10 pounds but mine have mostly been 15 to 25 with a couple hitting 30 pounds. Best watermelons I’ve ever eaten. Super sweet and perfect texture. And 4 to 6 melons per plant. Very productive. Also seem to hold up better to verticillium wilt.

You boys are just killin' me. I couldn't grow a watermelon here if you held a gun on me. Zone 5b, four months frost free, 6500' elevation. Frequent hail,. Do good on cabbage, peas, leeks, beets, beans. Good on herbs. Tomatoes in the hoop house and I'll be growing your Red Snapper and Summer Pick for the main crop canners in 2021. Can't grow melons, or sweet corn, or field peas to save my life.
Yours is the only gardening show I'll watch though our climates have so little in common. Very good , no BS education. Thank you. Best show on the internet.

I had grown indeterminate s for years. and fought bugs...and such to have maters for xmas. but this year i changed up and grew some Bella Rosa. Yall have changed my gardening completely and now we are in abundance!

Love the video. Gonna have to try the yellow watermelon. I used to work for a large watermelon farmer in Missouri in the river bottoms. Always been surprised to not see the hybrid variety Delta watermelon not take off in popularity. Best consistent watermelon I have had.
My mom used to make squash pickles, really good tasted like pickles should, they were either sweet or bread n butter.
I'm trying to grow them for the first time this year, in Northern Quebec, Canada... Hope I'll get somes... Nice Video ;)

Very educational show on gardening! I'm learning a lot! Yellow water is much sweeter than red. I love yellow water melon! I miss the old man who use to sell his along side of the road up by the college. He passed away years ago. I live in an apartment but if I can grow some in a pot I'm going to try it. It's been too long since I've had some yellow watermelon! I'm going to try cantaloupe in a pot to! LOL

And your ur right, last year I was pulling 4-5 tomatoes every couple week with indeterminates so this year I planted more tomatoes. Same deal, if not less!! Next year I will try determinates and hope for a better outcome. Now, watermelons...I have a Crimson Sweet growing and it’s in the early stages, but should it be soft to the touch?
It shouldn't be soft to the touch.
Brussel sprouts kick my butt every year. Almost ready to give up. In zone 3/4 I should be able to grow them.

This year I grew the Bella Rosa and the Red Snapper along with my usual heirloom tomatoes. I have to agree with you both about the production. I was able to can a ton of maters and I still have my heirlooms for late season harvest.
My bugaboo is onions. I've tried for a couple years now using sets, but this fall I'm going to try to transplant from seed and see if I can get a decent harvest.
My question is regarding kohlrabi. Being in zone 9b in central Florida when should I start the seeds? I'm looking forward to some slaw and pickling some too.
I would start them in early September.
travis you should plant your shallots late fall and let them over winter outside..and in the spring they will start growing..they do best when they go thru stratification..
That's the way we have done it for several years now. But they never seem to bulb like our onions do.

I live in Indiana. I grow more indeterminate because they produce and i like tomatoes coming off the vine all summer. I grow Big Beef and Jet Star and its hard to beat those in my ground and they out produce my determinates. I do florida weave for all. I am trying Red Snapper and Bellarosa this year as well as tachi, amish paste, mountain rougue, german green, wyche yellow, san marzano, sugar sweet cherry, midnight cherry but so far nothing has knocked off jet star and big beef for production and durability.
Follow up... clicking back now share why I put this here since it's about watermelons but I'm going to update my tomatoes. My indeterminants were dethroned by the Bella Rosa and Red Snapper and I think the red snapper outperformed the bellarosa. I also believe the taste winner of them all was the mountain Rouge and my friends agreed too. Next year my lineup will be belarosa, red snapper, Mountain Rouge, Amish paste, and big beef and I will probably drop the Jetstar and all my cherry tomatoes. I will not grow the yellow or the white or the german green tomato again I just can't get past the looks and whether its in my head or not I don't like to taste. The doctor Wyche yellow tomato out performed all tomato plants and grew the largest plant I've ever seen as far as Tomatoes go. I just didn't like the looks or the taste as much as a red tomato or the pink of the mountain Rouge.
I totally feel you on the ford hooks. I bought a big bag that claimed 85 or 87% germination rate and I had about 2%. Not sure what the problem is

Two things. 1. I grew Charleston Grays this year and they were I awesome. I will be growing that babydoll next year. It looks amazing. 2. I’ve struggled with carrots but I’ve been working a new plot for fall with a tarp and my driptape system should be here tomorrow.

Paul Reid If you follow the stem from where it attaches to the melon there will be a tendril and when it’s completely brown I wait a day or two and get it. If they’ve been pollinated for 30 days they might be ready. Look for the tendril and also roll it over and the belly should be white-ish/yellow. Good luck brother 👍🏻
I want some of those seeds, but I'm not sure if they will grow so good up here. I am looking at the Fedco catalog. My son loves the yellow watermelons and I am also planting the Sangria this season.

We had a 10 quart pot of tomatoes and then added (blended) about 10 garlic cloves, 10 bell peppers and 10 onions.
I love the idea of determinate tomatoes, and I already got some Bella Rosa and Tachi seeds for next season. My question is about spacing I know the standard is 2 feet but I have limited space how far can I push it, my beds are 8x3 and I usually space my indeterminate 2 rows at at 16" single stem can I space these at 21 inches"? I am in NJ.
You can push it and plant them closer if you have a way to support them.
Question: Crossing happens naturally sometimes creating a hybrid seed between two heirlooms. Sometimes that seed can be stabilized and after many years become a heirloom itself? Just wondering if some heirlooms were once hybrids themselves?

Yes. Perfect example is our South Anna Butternut (hosstools.com/product/south-anna-butternut-squash/). It was created from a stabilized cross between two open-pollinated varieties -- Waltham Butternut Squash and Seminole Pumpkin. But it takes several generations to achieve that stabilization.
I’ve never had an heirloom out produce a hybrid, especially red snapper and heritage.
You won’t loose any flavor when you use some big 12inch screens to get water out. I used to cook mine down for hours, one year i filtered the crushed tomatoes thru screens and cooked for 1hour, we couldn’t taste any difference in flavor.

You can soil drench with a fungicide like Liquid Copper. Also cover cropping will help to refresh the soil and break some pest/disease cycles.
I have been watching a lot of your videos and learning a lot. One thing I’d like to ask is could you some how post the actual date you do each video , say a little sign or something. I just watched a carrot video that says it in June yet in your conversation it was obviously in October. Accurate dating of videos would be SUPER helpful. Thanks !!!

Make sure you're rotating your cucurbit crops. And start a spraying program of spinosad and pyrethrin early.
I've always done indeterminate but will try determinate next spring. Could you tell us which ones you grow and recommend?

I am the deep south and grow indeterminate because they do well and that is pretty much all that is available. Celebrity is a semi-determinate and has done well for me. The others I have tried did not do well. I have a few indeterminates that are just too good to not grow like Cherokee Purple and Lemon Boy. My new favorite is Atomic Grape.
Second time I have viewed this video I'm a little confused about the monocot and the other one could you tell me what are they and do I plant different plants in one plot or one and one plot I don't understand always a great show that's the time I watch your real body well at least four times because I like them another five thumbs up if you could clear that up I really appreciate
Monocot and Dicot are just two classifications of plants. Google the Monocot vs. Dicot and you should easily find a list of the differences and the plants that belong to each.

My best 5 crops to grow are carrots, string beans, red potatoes, sweet potatoes and most of the brassicas, except like Dad said Brussels sprouts. I totally agree with him, they take so long to get to maturity I lose interest, the seasons change quick here and we don't get enough cool weather for them, and I want to get something else growing. In Florida the heat, pests etc gets really bad, so anything that takes that long to grow is going to be susceptible to a bad ending. Carrots take long too but not as long as Brussels, and the carrots look really pretty while they are growing. Since the carrots grow underground they don't get eaten by bugs. I used to be terrible at growing carrots till I really loosened up my soil and amended it. Now they grow great, plus I had to get the timing right. As far as the brassicas go, I never used to be good at them until I started growing them under covers. I don't get any pests so they stay nice and clean, no holes. This year I purchased from you the cauliflower seeds that curl over the heads automatically so I won't have to worry about doing that now. Life is good. The 5 bad things I don't have luck with are onions, fennel, melons, strawberries, butternut squash and sometimes peppers. I am trying a new red one by Hoss and hoping that one will do good.

They're both in the Curburbit family (also includes cucumbers, summer squash, gourds, pumpkins, etc.), so you would not want to plant any of those in the same spot in consecutive years.
I have a question, in regards to the Yellow Doll water melon. I have heard that when harvesting water melon, the small curly part of the stem above the water melon, when it drys back, the melon is ready to pick. Is this the same for the Yellow Doll water melon? Agree, the heirlooms flavors are hard to beat BUT the Bella Rosa comes damn close!! If you want those daily summer BLT sandwich’s, the Bella Rosa EASILY keeps up with your BLT production......🤷♀️🤷♀️!!

Howdy men , question about watermelons , will they grow very well in a predominately clay soil ? We have what we call a black gumbo soil that holds a lot of moisture and I would like to give them a try next year if you think there is a chance of success.
They'll do better in well-drained soil. They really like our sandy soil down here. I would suggest putting a thick layer of good compost along the row where you intend on planting to improve drainage.

What’s the best way to fertilize inground plants if you don’t have drip tape?
Apply a granular fertilizer like our Complete Organic Fertilizer pre-plant, then side dress with a granular or water-soluble fertilizer as the plants grow.

They like to be fed. Our 20-20-20 and Micro-Boost works well on both of those.

Feeding them through injection works really well for us when growing hybrids.
Can I plant corn in August, I live in texas zone 8b.
Oh yeah. We're in 8b as well and always plant a fall crop of sweet corn in late August/early September.
How do you know when your watermelon are ripe. I have tried thumping them and listening for a hollow sound, looking for a yellow spot on the bottom and waiting for the vines to die. I still occasionally pick one that’s not quite ripe. What method don you use?
Look at the tendril or "curly q" that is located right beside the fruit. When it dries completely, it should be ripe and ready.
Unfortunately, my watermelons didn't make this year. But is it possible to plant seed potatoes now for a fall harvest? We have plenty of time but I can't find anyone that has seed potatoes for sale.
It is possible, but seed potatoes are tough to find this time of year. You'd have to use potatoes from your spring harvest.
My grandpa planted yellow meat melons way back in the day. For me, nothing beats the big black diamond melons I grew up with. Do y’all have problems with ants in your garden plots? If so, how do you treat them?
We don't really have issues with ants. Ants like undisturbed areas. We like to "disturb" our garden pretty frequently, so we don't have many.
We got the opposite problem here. Our soil is black gumbo that dries up like concrete in the summer. Our beds look like hog heaven to those demons come 100 degree days. Love the show. Keep doing what y’all do!

They need plenty of room to vine and crawl. Not sure any-size tote would hold them.

How do you mow your grass walkways without blowing grass all over your gardens?
I use a push mower with a mulching deck, so it doesn't blow the grass anywhere -- just chops and drops it.
Is a rutabaga the same as a turnip my mom said there one in the same go figure if you could answer that I'll be very happy and next year I am going to plant that watermelon does your seed packets tell you when to plant I'm in 7A next year will be the first time I will have a very very large garden mapping it now going to have 10 or 20 50 X 50 the reason that many plots I attend to donate at least a third of my vegetables and fruits to a food bank and a soup kitchen thanks again guys for your superb knowledge
Not the same. Rutabagas have a much more milder flavor than turnips.

@@adamdille6031 I don't know what they did for their recipe, but from what I've always been told, tomatoes are acidic enough without having to add more.
We didn't use any vinegar. We put a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of sugar in each jar before the hot water bath to seal the jars.

No, not that we know of. Have not heard of it.
Sangria is my favorite watermelon with a thin rind, dark ruby flesh, the seeds line up straight, the cells are tight when cut but flood your mouth with juice when eaten.
We grew Sangria this year and loved it as well!
I got indeterminate tomatoes because I thought I’d get more... I know nothing about what I’m buying. I’m just taking recommendations and learning for myself what works in my area. I am very happy with my first garden.
You'll actually get many more in a shorter window with determinates, which is handy if you're canning.
I actually gave everything I had for other seed companies away because of how well everything I’ve gotten from Hoss Tools is doing. And I didn’t hear the part where the tomatoes won’t hurt your stomach until recently. Needless to say so but I’m looking forward to next spring and growing determinate!

thanks for sharing about watermelons with actual taste -- nothing more disappointing than most of what is available the markets where flavorless, mushy, gross. Most of the seedless varieties are horrible.

Hoss Tools No Pawpaw trees? Get a Maria’s Joy pawpaw tree and a different one for good pollination. They are hardy down to -20F.

Are there determinate and indeterminate varieties of potatoes
There are varieties of potatoes that have longer maturity dates than others. In some climates, the "indeterminate" or longer-maturing varieties will keep growing. Down here in the south, they just need to be dug about a month later than the "determinate" ones.
Now is Yellow Baby the same as Yellow Doll?
very similar, We can no longer get the Yellow doll. We are growing the Yellow baby for first time, so soon we should know.

On tomatoes I don’t like to put all my eggs in one basket I like to grow disease resistance hybrids determinate and I like indeterminate tomatoes also next year I’ll grow red snapper brickyard and Bella Rosa then chefs choice Cherokee purple and don’t laugh Abraham Lincoln lol and Tommy toes usally Roma’s but may change to tatchi you sell far as peas go real easy crop to grow here it’s a little cooler here in the spring well we had frost on up in may this year when will you have elephant garlic for sale I’ve got to plant some of that never have grown that variety?
We should have Elephant Garlic in October.

It's a great heirloom variety. Not as sweet as some of the modern-day hybrids, but a good one for sure!
this year i had worms in my onions. what causes those worms in onions.
Never heard of worms in onions. Onions are one of the few crops that we don't have to spray with anything.
Every year I have Allium leaf miner (a fly) in shallots and garlic. My bulbs are just over the size of the sets I planted. Won't grow onion family crops next year. Did you find dark orange pupae when you pulled up those onions? From the Netherlands.

@@dannybledsoe3048 Well, allium leaf miner is the only onion pest I experienced. Did you search your state extension service for 'onion pests'?
I grow indeterminates because I'm not necessarily looking to can my harvest; I like a staggered production over a few months, which I can get in So Cal with indeterminates.
But mainly, it's the incredible flavors of indeterminates that I enjoy. No way that any of your determinate hybrids will match up to an Ananas Noir, or a Pineapple tomato. They're just delicious. I bring them to work and give them to my neighbors. Everybody loves them!
Determinates/hybrids OTOH are insipid to me. Why grow something as boring and bland as you can already find in the grocery store?

I struggle with any root crop. I would love to have some tips. Especially growing kohlrabi from anyone that can help? P.S. There should be a law against y'all slurping on that watermelon and making all us drool!!!
Try transplanting the kohlrabi and giving it a complete fertilizer.
Any success with other cabbage family crops? Kale is easiest, cauliflower hardest. My cauliflower this year was like 2 inches in diameter. Kohlrabi is more like kale, at least where I live. What's wrong with your kohlrabi: goes to flower to soon (never happened to me), won't grow a sizable rabi (I have to admonish it to stop, stop growing now!), simply perishes?
First year I grew beetroot in my garden, it was a disaster. Even if successful it would only have provided three meals, but my beets showed funny colors in their leaves: bronze, purple, gold. When I decided to pull those beets and cook them, I had to go out and get a 'real microwave meal'. Utterly disgusting taste! Since you are having problems with root crops: maybe you have an insufficient supply of phosphorus.
