  • Garry Gary Beers is a founding member of Australian rock icons INXS and has played the biggest stages in the world as well as selling over 50million records globally. He has since gone on to design his own 'quad coil' pickups and subsequently his own line of boutiqye handmade instruments - GGB Basses. It was great to sit down with Garry and chat about his journey not just as a bass player, but also his philosphy and approach to designing and building instruments.
You can find my review of his basses here:

    Great conversation.
Garry has stayed one of my idols since I started playing bass in the late 80’s.
INXS were one of the best and fun live bands I’ve ever seen! Super tight! And yes, having one of the best male vocalists fronting this gang did help a bit of course. 😄
I’m seriously considering checking out Garry’s basses when my cash flow allows me to!
Having just the one versatile quad pickup in the right spot there just beats having two pickups, I think.
Having two of those powerful beasts pulling the strings would (potentially) make for a serious tone sucker! I’m mostly a Fender / MusicMan player and when I tried a 2HB MusicMan StingRay once, I knew for sure: nope, this ain’t gonna work...
But then again, I don’t know how powerful exactly Garry’s pickups really are compared to the MusicMan’s.
Having the option of a extra single coil in the bridge position could work imo. My former bass teacher used to have an old Fender Telecaster bass from 68/69 that he put a extra Jazz pickup in wich sounded great with the original P single coil: like a filthy jazzbass.
But, I think most PJ basses (except for Spectors and Yamaha BB’s) only sound great with the pickups wired in series, because in the standard parallel wiring you loose too much mids you actually really need in most situations...

Steve Chick lives near Newcastle north of Sydney, I went and saw him last year. He's making his Industrial Radio Basses from home. I got one. Great for recording and adding synths and effects.

Excellent interview!! Garry is one of the the most generous people I’ve ever met. Generous with his time, money, wisdom, contacts… The list goes on. Seriously. He gave me and my mates so much and never received anything back. He is the real deal musically and as a man. ✊

"Holding it down" is nothing to sneeze at. GGB totally owned the groove in INXS. Of all their songs, the bass line that sticks out a lot for me personally was for "The Gift" which has this unforgettable primary energy that totally drives it from the start to finish.

Totally agree that there is an art to laying it down as smartly and solidly as GGB does. Melodic, grooving and interesting!

1:00 most of us bassists begin with guitar, and then when there are too much guitarists around, we "upgrade" to the bass guitar :) probably because we are brave enough to 😅❤
