  • Bobby Brown's second studio album released on June 20th, 1988, Don't Be Cruel. The album would become the best selling album of 1989 and the second best-selling New Jack Swing album of all time. Each single went on to be classics: Every Little Step, Roni, Rock Wit'cha, Don't Be Cruel and My Prerogative. The latter reached number one and helped secure Bobby's status as a crossover solo act in the U.S and overseas. A collaborative production effort of L.A Reid, Babyface and Teddy Riley who helped forge the Bobby's signature sound. A testament to his increasing popularity, Bobby was featured on the Ghostbusters 2 soundtrack on it's hit on On Our Own. The monumental album was matched by Bobby's electric live performances and off-stage persona. This video essay details the history leading up to Don't Be Cruel as well as it's iconic aftermath.

Apologies for those watching on your mobile phones [using headphones]. I forgot to make an adjustment to the sound levels on the background music. The music will clash with my voice if you’re watching/listening on mobile devices at full volume. On Desktop/TV the sound is cool.
    I appreciate y’all watching!
    Thanks,

Can you please do 2pac’s 1995 classic album me against the world album because though it was not the last album 2pac released, me against the world is arguably his most accomplished and important. By capturing just how suffocated he felt at every level of American life he created a damning indictment of the country that that hated him back.

Great retrospect! "Don't Be Cruel" is easily of the best musical encapsulations of an artist ever! Bobby literally embodies every song on DBC. They match his bravado, vulnerability, sexuality, creativity, confidence and yes, his blackness. I also think it's a credit to Bobby that he inspired Teddy, LA and Babyface cause they were in their BAG on DBC. It's a pretty perfect album that still holds up and cements Bobby's status as a legend. Thanks for posting!

Its funny how in the Bobby Brown movie they made it seem like Bobby had to convince Louis Silas to let him work with Teddy Riley but hearing Teddy tell the story, it was the complete opposite! 😂

While Bobby's Attitude & Ego certainly is partially responsible for 'Getting him On', sadly it is also those same character traits that are resposiple for his Decline. Bob was riding so high in the Don't be Cruel Era, such a shame it couldn't have continued a little longer, was an exciting time ... 'On Own Own' was/is a beast of a record! ... Also, Face & Teddy def Killed on 'Bobby'

A masterpiece in every sense of the word. I didn't expect to hear Big Bub's name dropped in this though! It really sounds like Ronnie DeVoe was on backup vocals fr "My Prerogative". I always felt "Let's Take it Slow" was a leftover from the King of Stage album. Roni was written in 1982? That's wild! You get bonus points for referencing Bobby perform "I'll Be Good to You" on 227! His dance moves are some of the illest I've ever seen. Amazing work yet again sir!

Tho they are different levels, this was the only male artist other than MJ that I played over and over when I was a kid. He could have gone so far. A dancer you enjoyed watching like Mike. As much as I loved the remix album I think he would have sky rocketed had they released a new album instead. His second album took too long and by that time, dance music changed.

I can tell you that the difference between Bobby Brown and Michael Jackson (as I was a teenager at the time) was that Michael Jackson was making every effort to appeal to a broad, non-white audience, while Bobby Brown was unapologetically BLACK! Bobby was HARDCORE BLACK CULTURE. Coming out of the 1980s when Black artists (MJ, Prince, Paula Abdul) were bending over backwards to appeal to White people, Bobby was the first mega-star who didn't give off the "please, everyone like me" energy. He was....."this is me. Black!" Only people who lived through the '80s would know what I'm talking about.
