Living at Rincon is magic. In the 80s I lived right on the water for a year with a couple of fellow surfers in an old funky house (no longer there). It’s a life experience that I will never forget. Thanks for the video.

Fun Fact: Just around the Point from where the surfers play is a clothing-optional beach, at the northernmost end of the beach before you get to the Seal Sanctuary. Overhead at this beach are the paragliders who sail almost every day. It is one of the few beaches in Santa Barbara County with FREE parking! The beach closes at sunset and afterwards we enjoy dinner in nearby Carpinteria. I hope future videos expand the visuals to include these other community highlights.
Speaking of Rincon..... Many years ago it was a big gnarly seemingly blown out cold and raining winter day at Rincon with the wind howling. Maybe five or six cars parked up on the road and nobody going out, if like us, sitting there watching and wondering if someplace else might be decent enough to surf, but things that day not looking very hopeful. A car pulls up with a board strapped on top and Mike Purpus jumps out and grabs his board, heads down the cliff and quickly paddles out through the stormy surf. The only guy out the whole time, he totally ripped the place. It really looked like his cup of tea, really great surfing by a great surfer of the times. It made for a memorable day.
Epic Dennis! You can sometimes get lucky on those stormy days out there. I'm sure it was far less crowded in the era you mentioned above. Happy new year Dennis!
I used to live in the high desert and would drive over to Ventura area once a week - often Mondo's. One spring I started going up to Rincon and of course that's not the best for Rincon. Many times from spring to summer I would meet people on the trail & they'd say "don't waste your time - there's nothing out there". But after driving that far there's no way I wasn't going to get wet and at least get a paddle workout. There was never a trip that at least one set didn't roll through. Never disappointed! Thanks for bringing back some great memories! Happy New Year!
I miss Santa Barbara. Did plenty of surfing at UCSB campus point, and loved surfing Rincon. Fond memories of La Super Rica on Milpas street for delicious Mexican food. Sojourner & Natural Cafe were good restaurants. No longer in business. You are an amazing surfer!!

Think I got one at 80 seconds long there my last trip. Had one that would have gone the full length, a grower through the cove from indicators but it was my first wave of the session and didn't want to burn myself out... Note: never fear the burnout, always go the full length of ride at Con! Love going fast out there!

Wow! Flashbacks of a mid 70s (yep, I'm old now!) trip out there! We don't have long point breaks like that back on the Gulf Coast! It's backside for me and was a lot of fun, but crowded as heck. It was about like this video on the two days we were there, maybe a tick smaller. I remember not wearing a wetsuit and almost freezing! Malibu was the worst crowds we faced, Trestles the most hostile. (Sebastian Inlet in Florida made Trestles look tame. That place was crazy local!!) Thanks for bringing that fun memory back! I look forward to seeing you test the new sticks!

Hey Happy New Year from Canada 🇨🇦 Watched your “Goals” video and didn’t comment but after seeing your back therapy here thought I’d share - after fracturing two transverse processes (one separated) many years ago downhill Mtn biking when I lived in Whistler I suffered a wave of ruptured discs at L4-5 two years ago. Surviving back injuries are a life long goal but two years ago I committed to drop 30lbs and getting riding again. In the end my goal inspired me to end my career in luxury, I said goodbye to suits and pointy shoes, and now I manage a bike shop! There is so much to say about matching our lifestyles to our work when setting goals and I encourage everyone to think about making their passion their job. I definitely don’t earn the same $$ but the benefits of being healthy make the best goals. Cheers! Hi

Uhhh despite all of the "lovey dovey" comments.... Just a correction from someone who has grown up in SB (Santa Barbara). Rincon is located at the very outskirts of Santa Barbara "County". Just saying - for those that are travelling and not trying to be disappointed. It can be further than expected!
I lived at Rincon point for a year ( old beach house at the top of the point ) and would get it firing with only a few people in the water… also, night surf.
This ep oozed Cali feels. Also I think the first place I saw footage of you surfing was Rincon at 14ish?? I remember, because I thought at the time, "Wow this girl turns on rail".
I had NO IDEA about the husband. I have two best friends who are those type of doctors. It totally changes how you see the world. I remember sitting through an experiential physiology course at an ayurveda school and just being blown away. I live in the Ginseng capital of of the world, and my friend has the largest company, and he connected me with some Chinese herbalists in San Fran, and again, totally blown away. Has Tom ever studied things like Reiki or Rolfing?
I know! We need more Osteo’s over here in the states. I don’t think he does those techniques but I’ll ask. He manipulates (cracking), does a bunch of soft tissue techniques, dry needles and cups. Happy new year Dino!

Such a hard question! I think Rincon Cove when it's firing (maybe 2-3 times a year) wins... although Lowers has far more consistency. I don't think they'd be able to pull an event off at rincon unless they had a HUGE waiting period. Can be a little fickle for swell. Great question though!
You guys think you’re wetsuits are cold! The one thing I learned about moving up to Buellton from SB is not to leave my wetsuit in the bed of my truck on the trip down. That thing was freezing cold when I put it on this morning!
@@Lakey_Peterson actually it was pretty frigid today. It felt like Pismo at Sands and Devereux point when I first got out today. Usually south of Point Conception is much warmer. The wind from all these storms mush be pushing that cold water down the coast.
During my season I tend to stay more performance short board orientated… but these last few months I’ve been on the rocket wide, twin pin and happy everyday a lot.
Time for the Chrome Dome Look Tom....🤙🏽🌊👍🏽 I use to have Super Blonde/White Hair in my Teens and early 20s that was past my Shoulders.... All through High School all of the Girls we're jealous of a Guy (Me) and my Awesome Hair.... In my 30s I decided to shave my head and then started using a Bic to Razor🪒🪒🪒 my head and it's so Great. I save lots of money not having to buy shampoo or conditioner and save so much time when showering. 40K Likes Let's Gooooooooo 🌊🤙🏽💥🌊🤙🏽💥

@@Lakey_PetersonAs with any diet, being vegan can be done improperly if not planned out and executed strategically. There are tons of pro athletes who switched to plant-based and have never felt better. Check out Gamechangers documentary, Rich Roll, ect. As surfers especially we need to do everything we can for our oceans and environment. The meat/fishing/animal ag industry is one of the (if not the primary) contributor to ocean pollution, reef destruction, etc. We need to be role models for change, you have a following and a platform. It's also a moral and ethical issue as well. Thanks for your response.
@@rizzosurfing1 Some body types will not function on a vegan diet. I have certs in Chinese nutrition, LMT, Personal trainer. Vegans need to also understand the prototypical vegan protein source of beans when older, ruins the stomach. If you understand health, you know the stomach is the most vital organ in the body. Preservation of the stomach is key to a long life. Without the stomach, nothing is processed and distributed into energy.

I live in La Conchita, sandwiched between Rincon, and Mussel Shoals aka little Rincon minutes to the surf. Been here 3 years never leaving.

Such a hard question! I think Rincon Cove when it's firing (maybe 2-3 times a year) wins... although Lowers has far more consistency. I don't think they'd be able to pull an event off at rincon unless they had a HUGE waiting period. Can be a little fickle for swell. Great question though!
You guys think you’re wetsuits are cold! The one thing I learned about moving up to Buellton from SB is not to leave my wetsuit in the bed of my truck on the trip down. That thing was freezing cold when I put it on this morning!

@@Lakey_Peterson actually it was pretty frigid today. It felt like Pismo at Sands and Devereux point when I first got out today. Usually south of Point Conception is much warmer. The wind from all these storms mush be pushing that cold water down the coast.

During my season I tend to stay more performance short board orientated… but these last few months I’ve been on the rocket wide, twin pin and happy everyday a lot.

I tried a vegan diet a few years back. Really didn’t work for me but know some people absolutely love it.
@@Lakey_PetersonAs with any diet, being vegan can be done improperly if not planned out and executed strategically. There are tons of pro athletes who switched to plant-based and have never felt better. Check out Gamechangers documentary, Rich Roll, ect. As surfers especially we need to do everything we can for our oceans and environment. The meat/fishing/animal ag industry is one of the (if not the primary) contributor to ocean pollution, reef destruction, etc. We need to be role models for change, you have a following and a platform. It's also a moral and ethical issue as well. Thanks for your response.
@@rizzosurfing1 Some body types will not function on a vegan diet. I have certs in Chinese nutrition, LMT, Personal trainer. Vegans need to also understand the prototypical vegan protein source of beans when older, ruins the stomach. If you understand health, you know the stomach is the most vital organ in the body. Preservation of the stomach is key to a long life. Without the stomach, nothing is processed and distributed into energy.
