It's no coincidence that his style got better and better over time. A true testament to sticking to your craft and putting in the work! Another hit, Big K!
What I loved about Roma and why I felt it was masterful was how often Cleo felt like the background character in her own film. The failing marriage, the rise and rioting of a nationalist group, growing up as a child in this hectic world, all these things could have been their own movies and were often staged and filmed as if they were. But Cuarón demands we pay attention to Cleo, who considers herself to be in the background. It’s only when she takes her own agency into control (by facing her fear of water) that she is honest with herself and puts herself at the center of the story. It’s brilliant
This is a great video. As a Mexican, Cuarón is one of my heroes, alongside Lubezki, Del Toro and Iñárritu. Just some little nitpicking. It's mamÁ, you pronounce the last syllable harder. The way you said it sounds really weird in Spanish and it could even take another meaning😂
I absolutely love children of Me. I saw this in my cinematography class and was absolutely astounded by the one-shots in this movie. What a masterpiece
Y tu mamá también !!! Really who can imagine that 15 years later this guys : Diego Luna and Gael García are the protagonist from one movie of Star Wars and a Pixar hit !!! And obviusly a lot more ...really Amazing :p
“It‘s one thing to film a scene in just one shot to show how artsy and impressive you are with a camera“ This is film school in a nutshell, everyone‘s trying to be artsy and impressive instead of actually making a good movie.
Great film analysis Karsten, you have approve to show your theory of how Alfonso Cuarón, one of my all time favorite directors, have created his filmmaking experience? It’s what I enjoy watching his films and he’s becoming signature talented director so he show his ability to make his movie. He makes a subject matter focus during reference from political agendas and other parts that we audience must focus of what his story is telling into one major detail into another. Who know? Maybe I must go check of his films including I have “Y Tu Mamá También” was influential film that I got my Blu Ray Criterion Collection and others like “Children of Men,” “Gravity,” and re watch Roma in Netflix. Thanks for sharing analysis Karsten. My Top 5 Favorite Alfonso Cuarón Films are... 5. Gravity 4. Children of Men 3. Roma 2. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (His adapted filmmaking captures more loosely like Rowling’s third film) and... 1. Y Tu Mamá También
prisoner of azkaban is my favorite harry potter movie because it just feels so different and refreshing to all the others, just in the way that the book did.
HOLY HOLY!!! I can proudly say that I have the two HOTTEST women on this planet as MY GIRLFRIENDS! I am the unprettiest TH-camr ever, but they love me for what's inside! Thanks for listening lkevek
watched children of men a while ago and really enjoyed it, but i have seen y tu mama tambien today and it just cant leave my head, it was just so entertaining yet genius and perfect. i love movies
This man is an undiscovered genius! Genius in the cinema is the director's delivery of planned emotion by immersing the audience in the movie! Remember the horror of being launched into space!?
Honestly, I’ve been really unhappy with the majority of your recent content, but I loved this video. It’s a return to form. Forget about animated fur, this is what I like seeing from you. Excellent stuff.
Hey! First of all, great video. i wanted to tell you the importance of this videos, and your opinion of Roma. Im mexican and sometimes we are "to close" to the things depicted in Roma to see it objectively. Your videos/opinions show me a side of the movie that i never considered, the view of the world, how people from another country sees Mexico trough the eyes of Cuarón, how "non-mexicans" feel the movie and still call it a masterpiece although they never were in the country, they never grew with the things depicted in the movie and still praised it. I think that is great on Cuarón´s side but also great on your side for i know now how Roma (and y tu mamá tambien) touches something universal despite beign "too mexican"
Another story telling technique Alfonso Cuaron utalized in Y tu mama Tambian to demonstrate the current state of Mexico and it's politics aside from long shots is the narration over certain scenes. The scene where Tenoch and Julio are in the pool and Julio confuses to sleeping with his girlfriend the sound cuts & omniscient narration begins "Tenoch had only felt this pain in his stomach when he was 11 when he saw a photo of his father on an article that linked him to a scandal involving the sale of contaminated food to the poor. Tenoch and his parents moved to Vancouver for 8 months. Tenoch never asked the reason." Cuaron really captured all the subtle nuances of adolescence and loss of innocence in a certain time and place that feels so rich and authentic for the viewer. That scene and the one where they drive by the shrine on the side of the road where the little girl died in a bus accident gets me in my feels every time. It communicates Latin culture in a way that is just..... art.
Karsten, you may think that you’ve won, but while I’ve been silent I’ve been plotting. When your channel is enialated, you’ll wish that you didn’t put me in timeout on the Oscar stream
Also. Some time ago I watched a video breakdown of the one shot scene where they are heading down and the soldiers cease fire and after watching this I realised it was from this movie and now I can’t find that video! Does anyone by chance know the one I might mean?
I respect your opinion-piece, but I disagree with the sense of "progression" of his use of long shots (throughout his career) that you seem to be implying. In my opinion, all of the movies you mentioned (Y Tu Mamá También, Children of Men and ROMA) have masterful long shots, but they serve different functions.
Yay, Oscars today, is nothing that great including “Green Book” won an Oscar, it’s just a downer and some of these category choices and especially changes the rules of Academy and controversy of Spielberg’s disliking Netflix films is just insane. You ain’t going to be easy. 😕
“Politically nationalist group”???? That’s a very coded way (and even misleading) to call a government-financed paramilitary group trained to repress students (Los Halcones).
Hogwarts legacy will be coming out in a few weeks, and I'm very excited to play the game, but I was somewhat nervous it wouldn't be good for me individually as I never have read or watched the movies. I thought the best solution to this was to start with the movies; I was enthralled by what I missed in my childhood, hogwarts and the idea itself is brilliant. As I got into the middle of goblet of fire, I couldn't stop thinking" huh, why did quality drop so much after prisoner of azkaban? It seemed as if I was watching a beautiful film series turn into something more on the lines of the second Percy Jackson movie. That was until i saw that the directors changed and it made so much sense, this was the guy that made fucking y tu mama tambien!!! literally became one of my favorite directors that I didn't know of after this.
Royal Ocean Film Society also has a great video on a similar topic that is definitely worth checking out:

Soy Mexicano y estoy orgulloso de que tengamos directores tan increíbles como Cuarón
Also great vid Karsten!

Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro Iñárritu y Guillermo del Toro son unos de mis directores favoritos con Wes Anderson y Christopher Nolan.

I am so damn thankful for understanding Spanish beacause Y Tu Mama Tambien is such dialogue masterpiece and the subtitles do it no justice
that one uncut fighting scene in children of men is stunning. acting, cinematography, directing, styling. everything is just perfect.

Cuarón is one of my favorite directors. His films are incredibly thought out works of art. Great video!
I paused this video and preceded to watch all of Y Tu mamá también. It was quite good
_Cinematography at it's most Creative_

Uhm... did you watch Gravity?
shhh gravity is Allowed to draw attention to itself given the setting and situation.
Good point, i did a hmm with Dieks Comment, but Gravity is outstanding for Films Shots and Angles
I literally loved the way he pronounced Y tu Mamá también, it made it sound like a whole different movie💕💕, sooo cute
I personally loved the match cut you did between the military and the pigs
woooowo you have a lego tattoo never heard that before 🤯🤠

karsten’s lego tattoo is the meaning to life. i wake up and eat for his lego tattoo. i breathe for his lego tattoo
honestly i pay more attention to your video's than i ever do in filmschool

I never had a favorite director until I discovered Cuaron, and now life is good.
I'm not too big on film, but your videos still remain incredibly enteraining and informative. Keep doing what you're doing!

Y tu mama tambien will always be his masterpiece
I watched it way too young and was completely blind to the 'bigger picture' of Mexico. Should give it another viewing.
I think he's allowed to have multiple masterpieces
Prisoner of Azkaban was not my favourite book but a beautiful film due to a number of small details, years later I realised why.

long take = single unedited scene.
long shot = scene shot from a distance (see Barry Lyndon)
