Dogs are an excellent security measure. Between them, and our fencing, there is not really a way for anyone to approach the house from any direction, without being seen from inside first.
My doggo is my platoon early warning system. Pay attention to your k9 s they know way before you when there is threat. Trust them they are never wrong ..
I trained my dog to not chase cars, it took only one attempt. I got a cheap 75-foot nylon anchor line from Walmart (one with a lot of stretch). I put a large loop bowline on one end and a leash snap on the other end. I took her out in the yard with the line attached, at one point she took off after a truck, and just as she reached the end of the line I stepped onto the loop and screamed NOOOO! She snapped out horizontally mid-air and fell to the ground. She came directly back to me and NEVER chased a car again. I am sure some will say that it was cruel, but she died of old age, not run over by a car!
I'm not going to say it's cruel, simply ineffective for some dogs. I know of an otherwise trained dog that this very moment doesn't care if they snap horizontal.
I have 4 dogs that roam my property and three inside. All of them are 40 to 120 lbs. Nothing gets on the property except birds.. Glad you are feeling better and Maggie is smelling better
The way you spliced that wire, lends to easily getting pulled apart again. Twist the ends perpendicular to the run, fold it back along one of the two sides, and then wrap it in electrical tape. You'll have fewer issues. Of course, a wire nut (then fold and tape) would be even better.
A mate of mine is super fit and her resting heartbeat is under 60. She’s currently down with COVID and has a killer fever and a resting heartbeat over 80
@@Alan.livingston Sorry, to hear that. If she can get ahold of iverm€ctin then please guide her to to start ASAP in accordance with how her doctor advises her to take it. Everyone that I know who started taking it experienced incredible results. They also took zinc, quercetin, and high doses of vitamin C and D.
Hi Jason! This was a cool video and you are fully right because nothing could replace a dog on a homestead. We always have two of them and nothing could approach without alerting them. They are like a living alarm system, I will not miss them. Nice to see you recovering hope you are soon fully okay! All the best from 🇦🇹 🤠 👍
I have a large German shepherd. I didn't train her at all. She can hear from 2 blocks away. Sometimes it's an absolute pain. It came in handy once. My daughter had gone out to get gas and it was evening. We have never had any problems in this area. That night, she was being chased by 2 guys. She was only 6 blocks away from home and she wasn't expecting any trouble. My dog went to the door. Stood and listened then she went totally nuts. I pulled the door open and as she was skidding into the driveway. About that time, a car pulled up and jumped out. They didn't see me or the dog. I could see them approaching and I yelled out, I'm going to let the dog go and I'm going to pop all 4 of your tires. They were more afraid of the dog than what I had in my hand. Oh they left in a hurry and we haven't seen them since. A dog is your best friend.
Take your time with the recovery dont push yourself too hard and get your blood checked in a month or so i ended up with liver damage after having it but fixed that problem its a slow recovery for some people i hope you arent one of them! Thank you so much for taking the time to record videos in this state
I’ve had dogs for pheasant hunting and companionship my whole life and they’re great. We lost our dog of almost 15 years last spring and miss him dearly. He was a rescue pit/shepherd/boxer mix and while not a hunter, he was the best dog I’ve ever had. His only quirk was he was a bit of a licker. We’re in the process of a cross country move but once we’re settled, we’ll get another dog. I have two kids, 5 and 2, and I think every little kid needs a dog.
Glad ur feeling better brother....I had it over new Year.... Kicked my ass bad for 3 days... 💯 About every home should have a dog.... Awesome video man
My perimeter fence would break so I buried the wire in a plastic pipe because the rodent would chEw it in two. Even this did not work. So I got one which produced a radio signal and we have had great success with this kind of system and it’s been years since I had to deal with it. Try it.
I took Zimecterin from the co op and Immune + from the dollar store for C19 I had a year ago, still take a monthly dose of Zim/Ivermectin and a daily dose of Immune +. I'm a pureblood.
Chihuahuas are great alert and protection dogs. However, they are group ( their pack) only or one person dogs. And you have to be careful with them around children that are not part of their group. We have a monster size Lab and a tiny Chihuahua. The Lab barks a lot, but is a softy. The Chihuahua will tear the legs off an intruder and keep going and it is tough to stop him. Chihuahua are also good to keep mice, rats, and snakes off the property.
Where can I get a dog that doesn’t crap exactly where I will future step? I can’t tell you how much time I have spent doing that exact thing…fixing the fence.
Way too much responsibility. I hate scooping poop. Don't like listening to barking. Don't have thousands and thousands to spend at the vet if it gets sick. A friend's dog just hurt her hip on a run and is not able to walk. Vets wanting $4000 Canadian just for blood work and x-rays.... treatment likely a lot more on top of that. I can't afford that so I don't think it's right for me to adopt a dog if I can't provide absolutely everything it needs. Oh also I have a terminal illness and will likely be dead pretty soon. I'd hate to abandon a dog, even unintentionally.
I've have 2 german shepherds. Super smart and loyal. Didn't have to train them to guard. They can handle inclement weather. I won't get any other breed.
If your going to get a dog make sure you choose a bread that is good for a home stead or dogs that are bread to be guard dogs. Not all dogs are good for a home stead. I love having dogs on my home stead. I prefer schnauzers. I have a giant and a miniature schnauzer.
Don't carry one on me at all times. But it's close by. A multi-tool that is. I have a cat. And at 21, she's not the mouser, lizard hunter, etc... that she once was. But occasionally she brings one down. She definitely keeps other cats out of the yard. She won't let me get a dog.

Good idea just might not apply to all dogs. My dog has short term memory and is as stubborn as a mule.
Dogs and man have adapted side by side since the beginning

Have a look at the Western Union splice.
When properly made, it works well as-is and is always stronger than the wire if also soldered.
Imho, ANY good home is incomplete without a dog!! Love your videos and I'm glad to hear you're feeling better!
SO right on..!
Good to see you're on the mend, hope you're feeling back to 100% soon. This has become one of my favorite channels to watch.
So true what you said about covid, just doing day to day stuff is a workout in itself. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for the video. Cat's too, even if not in the title. Hope you feel better long term and not with long c'v'd.

Glad you are feeling better! Thanks for making this video. I am sharing it with my better half! :)

Dogs are excellent overall! Hope you feel better quickly

Glad to see you're on the mend Jason. I know what you mean about multi-tools. I don't leave the house without my Wave or my Skeletool.
Thanks for watching!

Dogs are also great security guards when it comes to other animals. Ain’t no way a possum is getting past Maggie’s boundary lines. 😁
I just have to ask : Are there any "Off-Grid" homesteaders living downstream that depend on that (now contaminated) water source...?
Awesome video
In my book the dog is the first line of security
