    THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH! And, you don't need to apologise for your speech, because you're very clear, and have provided subtitles to boot. Teaching clearly is an art in itself, and you surely have it - it's not funny how many videos I watched before yours, where I couldn't understand much at all. Thanks again!

    I agree with Brian below, this is excellent. You have no need to apologise for your speech as it very clear and concise (and the subtitles are great for clarity too). Exccellent video, probably the best I have seen. Thank you very much.

    Hey there,
    I wanted to take a moment to sincerely thank you for making this video. I just transitioned from Pro Tools 12 (don't get me started) to Cubase 8.5 Professional, and it's a pretty solid program, especially for VSTI use. I tend to use a lot VSTI's because I am in completely "in the box" at this point. Even though my computer has pretty good specs, I am always looking to learn how to reduce CPU usage. I own Native Instruments Komplete 10 Ultimate, and take my drum kits from there. In the past I would try to instantiate as many kits as it took to "treat" each piece of my drum kit within whatever DAW I was using. Obviously that tends to result awful crashes LOL. I have been watching TH-cam videos for days in an attempt to learn how to use multi-channels within the latest version of Cubase. Your video tutorial is by far the best. Everything is clearly explained and shown step-by-step, at a pace that completely works. I won't lie, I spent many hours trying to understand why/how these two programs work together, as well as trying to replicate it so it would work. Last night, after several attempts, I just couldn't get it to work, but tonight I did. If it weren't for your video I would be trying to take bits and pieces of videos using other DAWs, which wouldn't have gotten me to where I needed to be. So, now that I have a separate Cubase drum project saved, I can continue on with a song I have been writing and tracking for some time. Again, thank you for taking the time out to make this video with such care. As much as I appreciate the "closed caption" your English is fine my friend.
    I would encourage you to make more videos, even in the "trouble shooting" area (e.g. dropped VSTI notes when using a MIDI controller).
    All the best!

      Hi Brian,
      I am glad that the video helped you on your way. Thank you for the compliments, it's nice to hear nice things!
      Time wise, I am not really sure if I am going to be able to make more videos, this one was a fun project to do on a topic that I really found cool, but who knows, nice things do happen!
      Thank you!

    • @briangreco3965

      Thank you again. Terrific job!
      Quick question: I use a good amount of VSTI's during any given project in Cubase. Some of my favorite sounds are actually from other soft synth VSTI's though. In order to be more CPU efficient, is there a way to route several MIDI tracks from ANY virtual instruments? There is a point in which I cannot bounce my tracks because I need to make modifications, so basically, I'm still adding certain VSTI's as the project progresses, but this is of course taxes my CPU. I am officially "in the box," and would like to be able to work smarter with virtual instruments,
      Thanks!

    • @boggusman2804
      @boggusman2804  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, The only way I know to be "CPU efficient" with VSTI is shown in the video at 8:43 ,
      On one >rack instrument < you can have for example Kontakt and you open that rack instrument each time you want to add more sounds and create midi channels. You can add another > rack intrument < for other software like Vienna Sound Library and open that one each time you want to add sounds from that software.
      This way you open the VSTI synth software only once instead of opening the software each time when you create a track instrument. I had the same problem like you until I started using the rack instrument like I showed in the video at 8:43, for me it really freed up CPU. But not all VSTI synth software have the possibilitie to add more sounds within the VSTI software like Kontakt.
      The reason why I put "CPU efficient" in quote marks is because CPU usage relies on several factors, you can have a very fast computer, but if you start using a not so CPU efficient friendly VSTI software, you can have problems. To tell you an example, I wanted to use some of IK Ampli Tube guitar effects, but it started to crash on me. I contacted IK for this and they admitted that the software itself uses heavy CPU. In my opinion luckely the guitar rig of native instruments is as good and also "cpu efficient".

      Thanks for the post. Thanks for the advice. I will also check out the video at 8:43. Your Amplitube issue mirrors my issue with the U-he Diva. It's an amazing VSTI, but it is CPU hungry, and when you actually purchase it on the website, U-he actually states this. Let's stay in touch. Thanks again.

      One question. I've set it all up and it's working. But I have the MIDI channels in the Mixer. (Obviously no use!). How do I make sure they don't appear there. Has a mixer channel been auto assigned, or is it something I've done? Thanks

    Thanks very much - swapping from Logic to cubase. Mind you - this is trivial (and I mean trivial!) and much neater in the Logic system.. I would love to see Cubase take up that method it's very, very clean. But thanks! this has really helped me out for orchestral pieces!! My main concern in swapping to cubase. Very helpful indeed!

    Thanks for this routing tutorial especially the exclamation point tip... I think you are getting a signal on the main stereo #1 channel due to mic bleed through the Tom microphones, or any others [eg. the percussion channels] you didn't assign to their own output...If I'm right, muting that channel would prevent any Tom hits making it into your mix. If you're bothered by it, I'd just put a gate on that channel with enough threshold to keep the bleed quiet.

    Thanks for this tutorial. The next step would be to record the midi tracks into each separate track. Is it possible to this with midi tracks with the record option? For me the whole point is to get each separate midi track into the session. Am I missing something? Thoughts on this?

      Hello J. Borges,

    You beautiful beast! I have had issues with this for so long, getting closer but never fully integrated. It was the mono output issue at 6:45 that was the last hurdle for me. Thank you so much for this, kind sir. And please do update us if you figure out why there is still a signal on channel one. Might be track bleed from the recorded drum samples, as my snare channel registers slightly when I trigger the kick and vice versa

    You have put the Master drumtrack on St1 in the configuration phase thats Why st1 is giving a signal. Isnt iT better to ignore the st1 at the begining? Together with Ch1? Sparring it for the host ? in contact I have steen that you check marked the host.

      Hi Eric, I have not encountered the same problem from the video again. I asume it was due to the instruments of the drumkit like the tom1, tom2, etc,… they were still on the master output and I think that they were bleeding the sound of the kick, snare and hihat on ST1, but I am not sure.

    is it possible to use multiple instruments in one rack instead of loading it one by one every track?

    • @boggusman2804
      @boggusman2804  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Rack is meant to tap into the audio outs and midi channels of the Virtual Instrument software you are using and utilize it in Cubase.
      It is a firm Yes, if you use Virtual Instrument Software like Kontakt or VSL or Halion or Groove Agent etc, these type of Virtual Instrument software support multiple audio outs and multiple MIDI channels. Watch the vid from 8:43 and you'll see that I am using one rack and adding multiple instruments, it kinda functions like an external synth module or synthesizer.
      It is a firm No, if you use Virtual Instrument Software that does not support multiple outs and multiple MIDi channels, like Rob Papen SubBoomBass, Image Line harmor, SynthMaster etc, but these type of Virtual Instruments are normaly not really CPU heavy and because they don't support multi outs and multi midi channels they are meant to be loaded on individual tracks.

    Hello I faced with and issue when I try to set multi outs on my project. Everything seems correct but Cubase does not see the other outputs on vst rack. It shows only st 1 and calls it main. Am I do something wrong or Should I change an option on Cubase or kontakt? I use Kontakt 5.6 and Cubase Pro 8.5 EDU
    Thank you...:)

      Hello Görey, sorry for replying a bit late, I am not sure what is wrong, but if you followed the second step 3:41 setting up the multi outs of kontakt to be used in Cubase, than you should be able to do what is shown at 8:43, 10:33, and finally 12:37.
      Oh and don't forget to restart Kontakt 8:04 after finishing the second step.

    hello,
    thanx for the info i followed your steps i am realy new to this all, can you tel me where it for....workflow automation???
    cpu savings? i realy like to learn my new toys beter and getting to know the buttons.
    exuse me for my writing but i am dutch
    thanx again,
    wilfred

    • @boggusman2804
      @boggusman2804  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Wilfred, I'll try to answer your questions,
      When workflow automation is mentioned in videos, they most of the time mean automating some work like faders or effects in your song, for example, decreasing or increasing volume on certain parts of the mix. In other words automating the 'boring parts" of work you have to do. There are good videos out there on automation, you should check them out.
      Regarding cpu savings; some software or events in a software need a lot of calculating power from your computer, Depending on the type of computer you have, when you tell your computer to do a lot of things at the same time or you want it to do a huge job it can slow down your computer or sometimes it could even crash.
      These are the times when one starts talking about saving cpu (central processing unit) the calculating power, like not letting the computer to do so many things at the same time, for example close the browser when you are not using it. It is a very broad subject and a lot of people have their opinions on what can help save cpu.

    • @fred3824
      @fred3824 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ok and so this video is for less stressing the cpu?

    • @boggusman2804
      @boggusman2804  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main subject of the video is how to setup the multi out of kontakt 5 and cubase pro 8.5 and the advantage of using it. If you watch the video from 8:43, using the rack instrument and opening only 1 instance of kontak 5 helps being cpu efficient. In contrary to using the track instrument and having to open several instances.

      Hi Matthew, it becomes clear if you watch the video from 2:42 to 3:12.

  • @Pianistos
    @Pianistos 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    You don't have to make a Rack Instrument, just go to VST Instruments and add Track Instrument > Kontakt 5.
    Then you add MIDI Instruments and assign inputs (2, 3, 4, ...) for each of these MIDI Instruments. Do the same for the instruments you opened in Kontakt. Here is a video, don't forget to hide the MIDI outputs in the Mix window for a better clarity.
    th-cam.com/video/0VNhmS_m9l0/w-d-xo.html

    • @boggusman2804
      @boggusman2804  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Pianistos,
      Thanks for making a very good point.
      This was not possible on versions before Cubase 7.5.
      And there is still somewhat confusion and debating going on around Track vs Rack Instrument.
      I think experience (for me +30 years) and some reading will help people decide which one to use and when.
      Currently When using Track instrument on a Multi vst Instance
      1. The output tracks do not appear in your project window, only in your mix window.
      Drawing automation, Quick Control, Notepad and Lock on an output channel are not available.
      2. The 1st midi channel does not appear in your mix window, while the others do.
      There is probably a few more things, I haven't looked that close yet.
      In the past (and still for me in the present) the General rule has always been,
      Use Rack instrument on a Multi vst instance (e.g Kontak, Halion, etc,.. )
      Because
      1. That's what it is meant for.
      2. You will be able to route the Multi vst of 1 instance to different midi channels. Obviously that is now also possible on a Track instrument
      The most important reason why I still use Rack instrument on a Multi vst Instance,
      1. Habit and works well for me
      2. Drawing automation
      3. Because of the CPU usage. There is a difference in how Cubase uses CPU processing power on Track and Rack Instrument. The person who explains this well, is Svenne, search 'Fri Dec 06, 2013 1:14 pm' for his comment on www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=51468
      Keep on rocking the Piano! ;)

    • @boggusman2804

      Hi, as far as I can see in Cubase 8.5 pro there is a freeze function available in the 'rack' format with Kontakt.
      As you can see in the video at 8:59, there is the snowflake icon next to the E icon.
      However in Cubase 9 pro there is no freeze function instead there is the 'render in place' option wich you can find in the 'Edit' menu on the menubar at the top.
      By the way, the 'render in place' option is also available in Cubase 8.5 pro. If for whatever reason you don't have the freeze option, I would recommend using 'render in place'. Google 'cubase render in place' and you'll find some nice materials to help you out. Good luck and have fun!

    THOSE ASSIGNED TRACKS FROM KONTAKT ARE USELESS CAUSE YOU CAN'T RECORD THEM ....WHY??

    • @boggusman2804
      @boggusman2804  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Matthew,
      Those "assigned tracks" are actually outputs and you cannot record on an output.
      The outputs of Kontakt are meant to be able to manipulate the virtual instruments of Kontakt within Cubase as if it were an audio file e.g. you can use the EQ, sends, inserts, etc,...
      1. The recording happens on the midi tracks. (8:36 to 10:21)
      2. When you are finished with recording your music through midi. You can use the outputs of Kontakt to either directly manipulate the Virtual Instruments within Cubase or render it first as an actual audio file (see 2:42) and then manipulate.

    • @FANNIX-
      @FANNIX- 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why should I manipulate anyhing? What do you mean with that? I could just record on the midi tracks, mix with them and export that.

    • @boggusman2804
      @boggusman2804  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Fannix,
      Happy new year! Just saw your channel, You are one Awesome dude!!! Keep on doing what you’re doing, wish you all the best for this year!
      To answer your questions:
      You could absolutely work with midi only, if that is your preferred way of working.
      The thing is when you start mixing you have more possibilities using the outputs.
      Especially with Drums.
      And with your question, why should you manipulate anything and what I mean with that.
      You don’t have to manipulate the sound of an instrument if you don’t want to it’s not an obligation.
      If you think that the instrument or multitude of instruments or overall song sounds great the way it is, then it's your call to leave it that way.
      But normally people tend to manipulate a sound automatically, for example adding a reverb to a piano, which is changing the original sound to a sound that (on thinks) sounds more pleasing, depressing or spatial etc, that is manipulation.
      If you have only 1 instrument, than there is either no or not really much or really much or a bit or a tiny bit or a little bit more or "dude that sounds dope" sound manipulation needed depending entirely on what your personal taste is.
      However if you want to do more than that, like sound engineers who use EQ, sends, inserts, strip channel,plugins etc, on a multitude of instruments, keeping it organized, keeping the 'music' and technical aspects separate, and without having to strain the cpu of the computer very much, the outputs give you that possibility.
      Sound engineers try to look at the big picture and they try to make sure that the frequencies of each instrument in a song does not disturb each other, that is when they start manipulating. This is much needed, because if you have unmixed instruments playing at the same time it can sound muddy and difficult to hear what each individual instrument in a song is playing.
      At the same time there is the creative part of the mixing process, which is in short (but absolutely not limited to) balancing and manipulating instruments to sound the way you want them to sound without losing sight of the song and overall sound.
      Hope this answered your question, have a great year!!!

    • @brianjones8432
      @brianjones8432 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are cases where you want to change the sound outside of Kontakt.... Maybe you don't like the snare sound, or it doesn't have enough high end, or you want to add a reverb or some effect to it. To do this, you bounce the midi track to an audio file that you can then add whatever eq, effects, etc.... that you want on the sound. The approach he used here was to create all of the audio outputs in kontakt for the midi on individual channels routed to cubase audio channels. So all he would have to do is hit record on those cubase channels to have an audio file version of any of the midi tracks. Personally, I just load individual instances of kontakt for every instrument, and bounce each one directly with the new render in place feature in cubase whenever I need an audio file version of the track. When I finish a composition I always bounce all of my midi down to audio tracks anyway so I have a hard copy of the performance in WAV file format. You never know in the future if you will have those same VST's available, say if you move the project to a different studio and that studio doesn't have the same VST library, or something like that. It's just common practice to bounce all of your midi to audio stems at the end of a project anyway before mixing and mastering. That way you have far better control, and manipulation of the sound.
