Just a note of clarification Jonathan. As a Canadian who is disgusted by the film and the film festival, as I understand it the funding for the film Russians at War was not awarded directly by the Canadian Government. The funding was awarded by a separate organization that receives funding from government to use as they see fit. That said, I remain outraged! Oz is entirely correct about the film makers not even being aware that they have produced propaganda. They defend it to this day and I understand that TIFF, while they stopped a showing on protest, they did show it at a later date.

Yeah but furthermore the Media Fund gives our money when there’s a broadcaster willing to broadcast the film. But TVO, the main backer, eventually backed out because of the backlash.

There is a petition e5150 supported by MP James Bezan on OurCommons (officially Canadian parliament) if folks are interested.
1. Recover all taxpayer funds spent on the production of “Russians at War”;
2. Audit all government programs and funding to identify any projects that may directly or indirectly benefit Russia and its propaganda apparatus;
3. Request that Canadian law enforcement agencies, including the RCMP and CSIS, investigate any potential violations of Canadian, Ukrainian, or international law by Ms. Trofimova during her activities in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories;
4. Work with the RCMP to seize all materials collected and filmed as part of this production and examine them for potential evidence of Russian war crimes.
