It makes sense to me that you help him in the sense of giving him your years of knowledge and experience(like you have done for me and I’m sure most of your other viewers) but when it comes down to who cares for them on a “weekly basis” that he would take care of the plants he brings home! I say this just because you have been becoming so good at giving away plants that are no longer making you happy and I feel like I can see it makes caring for your plants less of a chore!

Seriously Claire, it's not like you have a lot of plants to take care of already 😅. Yeah....no. If you take care of them, they are technically yours. How will he ever truly learn about plants and their care if he bails on them ? I say, lend him your knowledge and support and let him learn. When you purge plants because you need to lighten your plant care load, and some I'm sure you'd keep otherwise, you don't really want to take on the responsibility for plants that don't interest you. When your kid wants a puppy, you tell them "only if you take it potty, feed it and walk it," right? No one give me hate over that last comment. After almost 39yrs of marriage, I've learned that men are only bigger, older boys 😁
I’m a Ross fan but if he brings home plants that you didn’t want, he should be the one to care for them. I lost it when he pulled out the pink princess 😂 I got one about that size a year ago, and it’s still the same size somehow.
Taking care of someone else's plants in addition to one's own plants is a surefire way to plant burnout and resentment. Additionally, the quickest killer of love is resentment. I wouldn't recommend it. The Manjula is one of my favorites, too!
I’m so happy to see the sisterhood in the plant community showing up for Claire. Those of us with more life experience have lived through the seemingly logical and small concessions at the earlier stages in a relationship and know how they add up exponentially over time. This unpaid physical, mental and emotional labor can turn into an additional full time job as family responsibilities grow. It’s great to recognize and flag them early on and hopefully change perspectives. I wish you both the best 💚
I had that peperomia but it was already rooted when I got it. It's very picky with water. Just make sure it gets wilty or soft before you water, the taco test . Ross should definitely be taking care of his own plants. You have enough of your own. Thank you for sharing 😊
Ross definitely needs to take care of the plants he brings into the house. If he’s not very interested in plants and not into caring for them or learning about them, he shouldn’t acquire them. It’s nice for him to come with you to plant swaps to for the fun of it, but he doesn’t need to bring plants back. Keep in mind that you have dealt with plant burn out (a lot of us have!), and it’s so important that your hobby brings you happiness and that the plants you care for are plants you love. It’s one of those things that fall under “the mental load” too and men tend to dismiss this as not a big deal, but it is a big deal and it can be totally exhausting. If someone dismisses your needs and feelings it will cause resentment and that’s hard to come back from as a couple. and just for reference, I’m 38 years old and been with my partner for 10 years, lived together for 7 years. We’ve been through this countless times 😄 If I were in your shoes, I would just let his plants die. Not my responsibility. If he doesn’t want them dying, he needs to take care of them properly ☺️
I think you could help him learn how to take care of his plants not do it for him. He'll start hopefully feeling more confident in doing it himself. He could research his plants

Know it was semi-joking, but let's turn it to a different subject but same scenario. Say Ross decided to bring another pet home without you discussing it, agreeing, or considering if you have an affinity with that type of animal (ex. a cat or bird). Then he said hey, since you are an animal carer already (i.e. Yoli), you should take on 90% of the care of this new animal. Is that fair? That might get him understanding what your point of view is regarding his plants' care. And he can feel free to say no to collecting more plants; us plant ppl have to build up that discipline sometime or another or we'd be broke and outside while INside 😅😂. Also, if you guys have kids someday, think you'll have to keep boundary with them in similar way. That if they want a pet (or even their own plants), they need to be ready for the responsibility. Then Ross can help you enforce that, as well. Love you both!
I absolutely agree with Claire, Ross should care for his own plants! advice and help with problems is great, but he should be responsible for their care. i always enjoy seeing you two together, you clearly work so well together! I love seeing partners enjoy their partners hobbies 💕
I agree with the others, if Ross brings plants home than it´s his responsibility. If he want´s you to take care of them then it´s basically your plants and you can decide what to do with them, including getting rid of them ;) I think you are doing it absolutely right, help him if needed, but basic care is his task. Maybe he needs to set himself a reminder to check on them, or plant them in semi hydro, if the problem is that he forgets to care for them.
Nop, i really don’t think that you should take care of his plants. Absolutely not. I live a similar situation. I don’t mind helping with repoting if he ask and water when I see that something really need water. But those plants are not part of my planty routine. 🫣
My 2 cents ..Claire..you give Ross a “workfow“ for his plants. A general idea of what to look for as far as when to water and what could potentially be problems, and if he has an issue he can come to you and ask. Ross, you give Claire a workflow for her finances, and same deal.. leave it up to the other person to do what you suggest, and come to you with questions... They will never learn otherwise.😂
If Ross brings plants home for himself then they are his responsibility to care for. Is he interested in the plant or not? If not, then drop it off at the next swap. He shouldn't feel obligated to accept plants from people at the swaps just cuz they know who he is. 🤷♀️ If he wasn't interested in the responsibility then just say no thank you. No one should be offended.
I had the best time even though I was late getting in! Can completely relate to feeling overwhelmed though. I feel like a lot of plant people are introverted by design and it’s funny to think of all of us introverted sorts being packed into a little room talking to each other about plants 😂 Glad you enjoyed it!
Highly recommend placing the peperomia stem in water in slightly higher light than normal! I’ve had the quickest, most success with this method over moss or half leaf cuttings

I’m pretty sure Ross’s last plant is a black cardinal. I believe its leaves are are more rounded and less lobe-y than the dark lord. I have one myself and just went through trying to identify it.
The peperomia graveolens - i feel like it's maybe quite similar to the verticilata red log which I've popped into terrariums and they've rooted so quickly. Also similar to the caperata rosso which I've propagated successfully straight into soil in chunks.
15:44 I’ll warn you, the Stromanthe Triostar can be a difficult plant. Ross will need help or it will be dead soon. I did good with mine for a year, then I let it go too long between waterings and it just went downhill. Currently, it’s in pon, in my greenhouse, recovering well, and growing again. It requires lots of humidity and don’t you dare skip a watering or let it dry out!
Nooo don’t cut up the leaves of that Peperomia. I’ve had some of those leaves in my prop box for months and nothing happening. The stems root easily though. I’d just stick it in a pot of soil and keep it damp. You could cut the stem into 2-3 pieces though.
Oh how fun, a Graveolens! I literally just got one a month-ish ago as a first-time plant dad (succulents mostly). I obviously have zero propagation experience, BUT for point of reference, I can tell you that I repotted her for the first time last week and was shocked to find out my 4" nursery pot was actually three separate plants, each still completely buried inside the 1" blocks of rockwool fluff or whatever that stuff is that they'd been seeded (? or cuttings? not sure) inside, with soil/gravel surrounding. Most relevantly, there were NO roots when I explored inside the capsules, despite how old, large, and happy the plants were. They seemed to just kind of peter out into a sort of lime green fibrous (but not at all hairy/tendrily) slightly transparent tip, as if you'd just snapped a piece of fresh asparagus in half or something. During re-potting I kept one completely inside its capsule, and then the other two were partially/mostly removed. I didn't do anything to re-root or propagate, I just stuck them in the (mostly dried out) succulent mix then watered a few days later. So far they all seem to be reacting identically, so it seems to me that roots may not EVER be necessary? Or in any case, it can live quite happily (while growing) for at least six weeks with no sign of actual rooting. Two of the plant portions are currently putting out brand new growth since the repotting, so it seems like they don't feel like they're missing anything, despite being rootless. I don't know anywhere near enough about plant habits or biology to understand what that all means, but there's my experience and data points.
Interesting you say that. I had a plant with next to no roots what so ever and she was still putting out growth. When I beheaded there were still no roots and then she produced two pups! I still have those pups to this day- 1 year ago- so yeah some plants are happy and can be alive with little to no roots. Succulents are pretty extraordinary in my eyes.
Id say you can help him figure out the quirks and needs of the plants while they acclimate and then he better write those tips down because otherwise theyre gonna go downhill! Also ah i adore seeing you take care of the wee plants theyre always so cuteee
My hubby has a problem with me giving away plants so he ends up taking them. He also has bought a couple of his own. They have their own spot away from mine and its up to him to look after his own. Just like you guys we have very different taste.

I had a Peperomia Graveolens. It did great for two years then it went downhill. Leaves don’t propagate well but cutting will root easily directly in soil.

It's totally fair that you each care for your own plants. Although, when his plants gets sick, I tend to be the one to repot and nurture back to health. Many of my husband's plants I'd probably kill or just not do as good of a job. So, generally, on those, he'd never ask for help.😅😂
17:45 There's a prolific weed on the east coast of Australia that looks like a green tradescantia with blue flowers; Google tells me it's Commelina Cyanea, commonly known as Scurvy Weed. It's native to Australia, is edible, and was appropriated into the diets of non-indigenous colonisers for it's high vitamin C content (hence the name). It propagates readily in water, and I've started keeping a jar in my kitchen to have readily accessible as a baby spinach alternative

I see where you're coming from Ross, but finances and plants are not the same thing. Plants are a hobby, and we should be able to enjoy a hobby without it becoming a chore. It's not fair if we're expected to pull energy from our own hobby to put it into someone else's, even if it's the same hobby.

But yeah, it would be kind of like being a painter, someone else buying a canvas, and then telling the painter to paint it instead of the person who bought it. It kinda doesn't feel like it is really their hobby at that point. Similarly, if you just look at plants like they are pets or something, it would be different to buy some animals for yourself and then only have the other person who already has a ton of pets take care of them. All that said; it is completely up to them to figure it out and if this does end up working for them then I am not going to judge at all lol. Every relationship has one person doing more of one thing and the other doing more of another thing. It is a little different because this is more a hobby, but in the end if ai works for them who the hell am I to say it's wrong? If they are both happy then they are doing it right. If they need to adapt over time (like we all do with literally everything in life anyway) they will and it isn't my business lol. If one person only liked watching video games being played and bought them so their partner likes playing them can play while they watch and they are both happy that is completely fine. If he just wants to watch the plants and she actually does the work and it makes them happy good for them!
Ross can make a list of very easy to care for plants with the conditions that he can provide for them. He should decide on how many he can take of and take care of himself. Hi Ross, We know you Love Claire. That's awesome.

I know I’m a little late, but I wanted to say it defiantly makes sense that he should care for his plants. I deal with a similar situation. My sister always wants me to take care of her plants daily. I’m happy to share what I know with her. I don’t think it’s fair for you to have to take complete care of his plants that he’s bringing home when you have so many of your own. Keep helping him by sharing knowledge or even have him go back and watch one of your videos for more information. Just my opinion but I hope this helps!
My trebuii moonlight decided to stop being a boring git once I moved it into lechuza pon. Chopped and proper my initial single leaf cutting many times since and now got 12 stems which produce a leaf each per month ish. Lives in my window, no growth light or cabinet humidity. Maybe I got a good one😄
I propagated a peperomia polybotrya by pinching off a stem with a leaf and sticking it into normal fairly dry garden soil. It stayed shiny and green for about a year and the next growing season with a little occasional drink and fertiliser it sprouted a second stem and leaf and then was very quick to bush out into a healthy packed plant. I let her dry out completely between waters and feeds. I’d be curious to see if spag moss makes it root quicker or if being more basic will be adequate. I do tend to like Ross’s choices (I’m crazy for my Trad Purple Heart) and like a pink plant but he should love them for himself otherwise not sure how he’d find the joy in plant care. 😊
Yea I had this debate with my bf, because I am the one with more knowledge.. I noticed that its a bad idea to take care of someones elses plants. They want to feel the joy you feel. I did the mistake in thinking I would need to help him, but he communicated with me that it makes him not want to care for them anymore. :X
I noticed when you repotted the Manjula you didn't use a wick with the semi-hydro. You mentioned using a reservoir though, so how do you know how far up to have the water in the outer pot? Is part of the pot that the plant is in, sitting in the water in order for it to wick up into the pon? I just repotted a few plants into pon and even after watching several videos I"m still unsure what to actually do in order to get the water to wick up into the pon.
Just because you know more about plants than ross doe not mean you have to wear his lode in life .a man like that will leave you to raise a child on your own 😢
I really enjoy these plant swaps videos. I wish they have them here in Ireland aswell. I have that peperomia succulent is a gorgeous unique one. I am still waiting to get a Hoya Wilbur Graves. I had the Scindapus Treubii datk form and Moonlight. I have given up any Scindapus I don’t like their leggy growth. I love green plants with white variegations but i have given them up cause of the white parts turning black or bleaching. Also for some reasons fungus gnats are so attracted to my njoys and manjulas when i had them too. I think cause of these plants needs more watering regularly.
In my experience the Peperomia graveolens can be propagated in water or in soil. I think I've had the most luck planting stem cuttings directly in soil. It loves a sunny windowsill.
Leaf propping works for my Peperomias. Currently trying it on a Pickolo Bando. I agree on the autonomy in caring for one’s own plants. There might be an occasional one you two decide to coparent.
I have quite a few Ficus Elasticas and I've chopped mine a bunch of times lol. I have the most luck rooting them in a moss/perlite mix (with a quick rooting powder dip) in a cup and then I pop the whole thing into a large Ziplock bag and place it under grow lights on a warming mat. They root pretty quickly. After they root, I transplant into a coco peat/perlite/small bark/worm castings mix (I keep some moss on new roots too) then I put them back into the bag and into a bright window that has a sheer curtain and they do really well. I propped my pepperomia hope in moss. I did stems and leaves, they took awhile to root. So I think you should leave yours the way you did it. Also, I think you should have Ross vlog the next plant swap! 🪴
It was so great to meet you ! The plants you are Ross got look awesome! The Triostar that Ross got is a lovely one. I put mine in coarse mix semi hydro and since then the growth has been crazy and the plant is so happy! I also feel you guys being so tired after 😂 I’m not used to so much socialising 😂 It was great though

Nooo don’t cut up the leaves of that Peperomia. I’ve had some of those leaves in my prop box for months and nothing happening. The stems root easily though. I’d just stick it in a pot of soil and keep it damp. You could cut the stem into 2-3 pieces though.
Oh how fun, a Graveolens! I literally just got one a month-ish ago as a first-time plant dad (succulents mostly). I obviously have zero propagation experience, BUT for point of reference, I can tell you that I repotted her for the first time last week and was shocked to find out my 4" nursery pot was actually three separate plants, each still completely buried inside the 1" blocks of rockwool fluff or whatever that stuff is that they'd been seeded (? or cuttings? not sure) inside, with soil/gravel surrounding.
Most relevantly, there were NO roots when I explored inside the capsules, despite how old, large, and happy the plants were. They seemed to just kind of peter out into a sort of lime green fibrous (but not at all hairy/tendrily) slightly transparent tip, as if you'd just snapped a piece of fresh asparagus in half or something. During re-potting I kept one completely inside its capsule, and then the other two were partially/mostly removed. I didn't do anything to re-root or propagate, I just stuck them in the (mostly dried out) succulent mix then watered a few days later. So far they all seem to be reacting identically, so it seems to me that roots may not EVER be necessary? Or in any case, it can live quite happily (while growing) for at least six weeks with no sign of actual rooting. Two of the plant portions are currently putting out brand new growth since the repotting, so it seems like they don't feel like they're missing anything, despite being rootless.
I don't know anywhere near enough about plant habits or biology to understand what that all means, but there's my experience and data points.
Interesting you say that. I had a plant with next to no roots what so ever and she was still putting out growth. When I beheaded there were still no roots and then she produced two pups! I still have those pups to this day- 1 year ago- so yeah some plants are happy and can be alive with little to no roots. Succulents are pretty extraordinary in my eyes.
How do you find places to swap plants? I’m new to plants and what to grow my collection.
Id say you can help him figure out the quirks and needs of the plants while they acclimate and then he better write those tips down because otherwise theyre gonna go downhill!

My hubby has a problem with me giving away plants so he ends up taking them. He also has bought a couple of his own. They have their own spot away from mine and its up to him to look after his own. Just like you guys we have very different taste.

He needs to be a plant parent too. 😊 after watching your videos for so long I now have acquired so many plants. Over 100 at last count 😮 we have bought ladders bookcases to hold some and so many stands and floor pots etc. I also made my first moss pole today! I had a Peperomia Graveolens. It did great for two years then it went downhill. Leaves don’t propagate well but cutting will root easily directly in soil.

It's totally fair that you each care for your own plants. Although, when his plants gets sick, I tend to be the one to repot and nurture back to health. Many of my husband's plants I'd probably kill or just not do as good of a job. So, generally, on those, he'd never ask for help.😅😂
I have great luck propagating peperomia with stems like that in water!
17:45 There's a prolific weed on the east coast of Australia that looks like a green tradescantia with blue flowers; Google tells me it's Commelina Cyanea, commonly known as Scurvy Weed. It's native to Australia, is edible, and was appropriated into the diets of non-indigenous colonisers for it's high vitamin C content (hence the name). It propagates readily in water, and I've started keeping a jar in my kitchen to have readily accessible as a baby spinach alternative

I see where you're coming from Ross, but finances and plants are not the same thing. Plants are a hobby, and we should be able to enjoy a hobby without it becoming a chore. It's not fair if we're expected to pull energy from our own hobby to put it into someone else's, even if it's the same hobby.

@pinstripesuitandheels I see both sides. But yeah, it would be kind of like being a painter, someone else buying a canvas, and then telling the painter to paint it instead of the person who bought it. It kinda doesn't feel like it is really their hobby at that point. Similarly, if you just look at plants like they are pets or something, it would be different to buy some animals for yourself and then only have the other person who already has a ton of pets take care of them. All that said; it is completely up to them to figure it out and if this does end up working for them then I am not going to judge at all lol. Every relationship has one person doing more of one thing and the other doing more of another thing. It is a little different because this is more a hobby, but in the end if ai works for them who the hell am I to say it's wrong? If they are both happy then they are doing it right. If they need to adapt over time (like we all do with literally everything in life anyway) they will and it isn't my business lol. If one person only liked watching video games being played and bought them so their partner likes playing them can play while they watch and they are both happy that is completely fine. If he just wants to watch the plants and she actually does the work and it makes them happy good for them!

I know I’m a little late, but I wanted to say it defiantly makes sense that he should care for his plants. I deal with a similar situation. My sister always wants me to take care of her plants daily. I’m happy to share what I know with her. I don’t think it’s fair for you to have to take complete care of his plants that he’s bringing home when you have so many of your own. Keep helping him by sharing knowledge or even have him go back and watch one of your videos for more information. Just my opinion but I hope this helps!
My trebuii moonlight decided to stop being a boring git once I moved it into lechuza pon. Chopped and proper my initial single leaf cutting many times since and now got 12 stems which produce a leaf each per month ish. Lives in my window, no growth light or cabinet humidity. Maybe I got a good one😄
I propagated a peperomia polybotrya by pinching off a stem with a leaf and sticking it into normal fairly dry garden soil. It stayed shiny and green for about a year and the next growing season with a little occasional drink and fertiliser it sprouted a second stem and leaf and then was very quick to bush out into a healthy packed plant. I let her dry out completely between waters and feeds. I’d be curious to see if spag moss makes it root quicker or if being more basic will be adequate. I do tend to like Ross’s choices (I’m crazy for my Trad Purple Heart) and like a pink plant but he should love them for himself otherwise not sure how he’d find the joy in plant care. 😊

Yea I had this debate with my bf, because I am the one with more knowledge.. I noticed that its a bad idea to take care of someones elses plants. They want to feel the joy you feel. I did the mistake in thinking I would need to help him, but he communicated with me that it makes him not want to care for them anymore. :X
I noticed when you repotted the Manjula you didn't use a wick with the semi-hydro. You mentioned using a reservoir though, so how do you know how far up to have the water in the outer pot? Is part of the pot that the plant is in, sitting in the water in order for it to wick up into the pon? I just repotted a few plants into pon and even after watching several videos I"m still unsure what to actually do in order to get the water to wick up into the pon.
OMG i cant get rid of the Trad in my garden borders here in Australia and yet in the UK we had it in pots all round the house :D.

I really enjoy these plant swaps videos. I wish they have them here in Ireland aswell. I have that peperomia succulent is a gorgeous unique one. I am still waiting to get a Hoya Wilbur Graves. I had the Scindapus Treubii datk form and Moonlight. I have given up any Scindapus I don’t like their leggy growth. I love green plants with white variegations but i have given them up cause of the white parts turning black or bleaching. Also for some reasons fungus gnats are so attracted to my njoys and manjulas when i had them too. I think cause of these plants needs more watering regularly.
In my experience the Peperomia graveolens can be propagated in water or in soil. I think I've had the most luck planting stem cuttings directly in soil. It loves a sunny windowsill.

Leaf propping works for my Peperomias. Currently trying it on a Pickolo Bando. I agree on the autonomy in caring for one’s own plants. There might be an occasional one you two decide to coparent.
I have quite a few Ficus Elasticas and I've chopped mine a bunch of times lol. I have the most luck rooting them in a moss/perlite mix (with a quick rooting powder dip) in a cup and then I pop the whole thing into a large Ziplock bag and place it under grow lights on a warming mat. They root pretty quickly.
After they root, I transplant into a coco peat/perlite/small bark/worm castings mix (I keep some moss on new roots too) then I put them back into the bag and into a bright window that has a sheer curtain and they do really well. Good luck!💚✌🏽

I propped my pepperomia hope in moss. I did stems and leaves, they took awhile to root. So I think you should leave yours the way you did it.

The Triostar that Ross got is a lovely one. I put mine in coarse mix semi hydro and since then the growth has been crazy and the plant is so happy!

It's a very old word, something you would normally only read in classic literature from the 19th century. It means "regrettably", "unfortunately". Today it's mostly used to add a sense of mock seriousness to what you're saying.
That's what I know of the word as a non-native English speaker.
Its so funny to hear this, in Dutch we use this word on a daily basis. Its spelled "helaas" and has the same meaning 😊
