    My grandfather, who owned a small farm in Jasper County, SC, thought me how to drive in the early 1970s on John Deere 1010!

    I did a 100 years of John Deere Tractors paper for my senior paper and did a whole section on the New Generation Tractors.

    The 1010 was a Dubuque built model, same tractor as the 430 upright 2 cylinder that came before, just upgraded with a four cylinder. Deere didn't see the need to put a lot into this model as it was a stop gap to make the transition complete and the smaller tractor was a declining market at the time. 3010 4010 were good machines other than the bolt on PTO stub, really had to watch and keep the bolts tight and some farmers didn't make sure that the gear shift was engaged properly and destroyed the system by either jamming the shift collar, stripping the shift splines or bending the shift pin, total tear down to fix, the 20 series changeable shaft was a HUGE improvement. HOWEVER the 2010 ,that was a sweet running tractor but as our dealer told me when I worked there in high school, Deere hired the engineers in charge of it from Massey, total cluster, different from anything before or since from Deere. I know because Dad and I farmed with all of them, still have warm spot for the 2010, learned to do a lot of farming on the thing, that and an 88 Oliver, but another day

    I happen to have a 1010 crawler, for the size that it is it's a little beast, but it does have some attitude problems regarding starting.

    I can dig it nothing wrong with a little tractor power if there are 50 K of them out there maybe this will scratch my classic tractor itch

    Cool tractor but long axles would have been nice for row crop versatility.

      interman 77 this particular tractor is considered a "Single Row Utility" They made several different variants of the 1010.

      It's has adjustable wheels. Why do you need long axles?

    • @interman7715
      @interman7715 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jlsmith6310 The adjustments in the rim only allow limited range unlike long axles.

    I'm 17 and want some land of my own some day! I love these machines but have heard they aren't good machines. Would this make like, a good little hobby machine? Are they really as poor on reliability as some say?

    • @fsca72
      @fsca72 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just the early 1010 and 2010 maybe some would say the 3010. Since John Deere was just making the switch to these new tractors in 1960 they had lots of issues with the hydraulics, new engines etc. By 1963-64 JD had things more reliable.

    • @daveb1081
      @daveb1081 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fsca72 that's good to hear! I've always liked these machines, kinda want one some day. yeah, the New Gen was quite revolutionary, I can see why they were having issues, new machine and such.

    The worst john Deere tractor the 10 series almost bankrupted JD the entire engineer core that produced the series where fired from the engine to the differential was garbage

    • @daveb1081
      @daveb1081 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ehh, the 1010 was a bad apple indeed, idk about the rest tho.

    • @6h471
      @6h471 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2 cylinder models previous to the 10 series are what would have bankrupted John Deere.
