    Do you suffer from diarrhea that has persisted every day for weeks? You may have microscopic colitis! In this video I discuss what defines microscopic colitis. I present who is at risk of getting microscopic colitis, including common medications that can cause microscopic colitis. I also discuss how diarrhea is evaluated, to exclude other much more common causes of diarrhea, evaluate for problems of electrolytes, anemia, and protein that result from chronic diarrhea, and perform a colonoscopy to evaluate for microscopic colitis.

    It is under diagnosed probably because the colon looks normal despite having chronic diarrhea too frequently the doctor doesn’t take biopsies of a normal looking colon. So I don’t think it’s so rare. It’s under diagnosed.

    I just got diagnosed with microscopic colitis it came out of nowhere is it possible that the low dose statin of creator I started 9/22/22 led to this? It’s 6/16/23 just searching for reasons why I got this I’m 61

      Crestor is not one of the statins implicated.

    I just turned 33 and had a colonoscopy due to a positive FIT test. The colonoscopy revealed microscopic colitis and I’ve been very worried about this diagnosis and if it means something else is wrong with me which is causing it. I don’t have the chronic diarrhea symptom that mentioned though I am prone to diarrhea.. always thought it was IBS.

    • @MarkCooperMD

      Interesting. If you weren’t having diarrhea what prompted the biopsy?

    I was told for 15 years I just needed to eat more fiber and it was probably ibs. I had my first colonoscopy and just got diagnosed at 34. My gastroenterologist really listened to me and made sure to take a biopsy. Im so grateful. Hopefully I can finally get some help for my symptoms.

    I have had this multiple times as a man since his mid 20's. I also have well controlled type 1 diabetes + well controlled celiac disease + hypogammaglobulinemia, so this makes me curious what the connection is at the genetic level? Usually I get hospitalized when this appears due to it causing abdominal sepsis.

    Thank you Doctor! I had microscopic colitis and it was caused by an SSRI called Zoloft. I also have Coeliac Disease and Hashimoto’s, but when I changed to another med from Zoloft the Colitis went away. Thank you for drawing attention to this possibility in your presentation. It is an extremely unpleasant complaint.

    • @MarkCooperMD
      @MarkCooperMD  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really can be a disaster. I’m amazed at how severe the symptoms can become - they can really disrupt daily living. That’s interesting about Zoloft as some of the data that suggests these specific meds are culprits has been questioned recently. In practice I’ve seen people improve when making Med changes. Overall I think both the data and experience point towards SSRIs, statins, PPIs, and NSAIDs being culprits. Thankfully it remains a rare problem of these treatments. Glad you’re doing better and thanks for watching.

    My 16 year old daughter had a colonoscopy today because she has had lots of blood in stools and a mixture of chronic diarrhoea and constipation they have taken biopsies too look for microscopic colitis but the symptoms doesn’t seem to fit so much like Crohn’s does because mc says no blood and rarely any constipation so I feel a little confused. Also does this require surgery at all because theres not alot of information on it and she is terrified she will need an operation
    I will watch out for your reply thanks in advance also she had gallbladder removed last year

    I had a colonoscopy a month before my diarhoe started one night after eating lots of fruits in the evening and at 10 o' clock about half a kilo of homeade ice-cream which was terrible frozen. A few hours later, I woke up at 1-3 a.m with watery diarhoes, about 7-8 times. I have gas which causes cramps, cramps with the first doarhoes stool, then it stops and whatever I eat now for 18 day now is still causing diarhoea. Doctor refuses to give me another colonoscopy because he said I cannot have another one this early. Can what I ate trigger it please?and can a caproctein stool detect if I have UC?thank you! My colonoscopy was normal at the time, but had back burning pain and left hand side burning pain and constipation which made then send me to do a colonoscopy

    • @emilia-qq3du

      So I don't have anemia and both my blood calproctein and stool calproctein came back normal, yet, when I ate soup with onion and parsnip, 2 small salad leaves, 4 rich tea biscuits, my diarhoea with cramps started again, foul smelling
      I was only eating meat, rice, potatoes, kefir, blueberries, bananas and avocado before and my stool was normal for a while. The poop smelled like onion after eating the soup, could the onion be the culprit?

      If you stopped absorbing nutrients your small bowel is affected by something as the colon has little responsibility for absorbing nutrients.
