Yes! He and Mata Nui are the only ones to use shields as weapons! Pretty badass when you get to be like the Great Spirit himself!
After all these years and looking back now, for some reason it’s Nuparu who catches my eye most out of these sets. It’s so unique to- and I remember thinking this in 2007 too- see a Toa of Earth be so light, tall, and elegant. Especially since in 2006 he looked like a skinhead that could kick your ass lol.

Lol that's so true! Some Mahri were very small and others pretty tall. I think half- Jaller, Hahli, Nuparu are tall and half- Hewkii, Kongu, and Matoro are small.
I actually really liked Kongu. Even if the cordak blasters don't always work too well, it was really fun to unload TWELVE bullets out with him! The Jaller set looked awesome but with that crab it made things difficult... I think pretty much everyone just made him hold the blaster eventually.

The fact that the blasters won't work as much if exposed to water is kind of ironic since the theme is underwater.
Imagine if the cortex blasters were rubberband powered instead of a metal spring.

Nuparu was my favorite toa figure in both 2006, and 2007.
Also that shield is designed to be used against a sword, since it can be used to catch and lock in a sword, plus because of its sharp edges, you could say it can also be used to deal damage.
Somehow, Nuparu was my first Inika, but my last Mahri.
At first glance I thought it was ment for projectiles. Sense his mask is the same color it looks like it would let guard himself, shoot his weapon, and still be able to see.
Fun fact about the shield. The designer intended it to be a double/quad-bladed sword, hence the gaps, but LEGO decided to market it as a shield because, let’s be honest, that’s what it _actually_ looks like.
Eljay, when you were demonstrating the cordak blaster, you said: "Take your two index fingers..."
He does that many times 🤣
One more count: Nuparu's hand is totaly exposed, i mean: think this: you are holding a shield, but you must to grab it in the center, leaving your hand exposer do any attack.

Lego can't seem to get action figure shields right for one reason or another.

The gaps in the shield are actually a common design choice in real shields, it lets you poke a firearm through the gap and fire without moving the shield aside
The Mahri were so much better than the inika.
I had all six of both forms. I'd have to say I preferred the Inika by far. To each their own though.

i agree, personally i hate the inika, they look extremely ugly and bad, their proportions are also bad(the doesnt fit with a toa in my opinion). the mahri and the summer wave of 2008 (the vehicles,correct me if i am wrong) are my favorite g1 lines.

AlphaSpaceWombat I made a video where the Toa Nuva fight Voltix, and Kopaka freezes him several times. Since I really did freeze Voltix solid, all of his joints are squeaky now. It's water, not chlorine. Don't let your sets air-dry. Be sure to use a towel, then air dry the ones the you can't dry all the way.

Water freezing is a destructive process. It shatters rocks by pooling into cracks, freezing, and expanding. Just think what it'd do inside a ball & socket joint.
They used a black axle in the Green Lantern ultrabuild in 2012. i believe you, Eljay! :D
I remember at many stores, they were selling this Bionicle Toa Mahri Nuparu set for $1.80 because no one wanted to buy this, even at clearance. However, despite being kind of bland with just a shield, his mask and color scheme makes him pretty cool. The big feet also help with many great poses. I wish I could've bought another one
The Toa Mahri's concept was awesome. Came out damn near perfect too IMO.
I was too young to get into Bionicle, but having looked at most of the sets, I have to agree with you. It just looks to work *so well.*

Jared Durtschi *AW WHAT?!* Well, double checked and you were right. Fixed that and may mention that in the 07 overview. Interesting to note that it nearly completely covers the blue pin. Made the set even better.

Ah yes, my personal favorite of the Toa Mahri. The gappy design is a bit odd, though I believe Nuparu would be fast enough to block projectiles anyway. Besides, his mask power lets him slip away if the target has bullseye-level aim. Still an awesome set imo.
but he is an Inika build, but a modified Inika build. Meeeeooowww!
the red on the blaster works for this set in my opinion. it would look really bland if it was say gray or black.
Man, I miss the old Bionicle look, all the pistons and joints in the limbs, and the many options of armor placement for different looks, the new system just does not work for me. (I miss you, classic Bionicle...)
NathanTheDalek Yeah, because Lego isn't about building a solid, well-designed set with a uniform, simple yet flexible system... no no, it's about putting together hyper detailed, brittle and overly-specific parts that look nothing like actual Lego pieces. I mean, just look at Galidor, those action figures even had fur and cloth wrinkles... such a classic and successful Lego line, am I right?

+tesla effect have you looked at tahu from the front? Plenty of gaps. Or any of the sets bar kopaka from the side? There's that hideous exposed ball joint and the fact that the arms are way too far back. New sets arent exempt from these sorts of problems
Nathanthedalek is one of those fans who will always compare everything to the original and he won't let go of the original bionicle
NathanTheDalek I do miss the old look too but I think the new one is pretty ok. While the limbs and ball joint armor do lack detail, the armor addons capture that old bionicle look pretty well.
Do the black pins redeem Nuparu for Eljay after the McToran thing annoyed him? :P

I actually think Eljay is completely right on the axle and pin issue. I never really got why the 2 length axle became red and the 3 length became white. Sure it looked good on the Bohrok kal but why keep using them. I'm little more understanding toward the pin issue as a blue pin is high friction and tan is low friction. There is no reason why those pins couldn't be black and light grey, which they actually used to be. That way the would not clash with most color schemes. Its even worse when you realize that pegs were still being used in black and grey well into the blue and tan pin era. My only explanation is that they would be easier to find in a chest of lego pieces, where due to their small size would be difficult to find in black or grey.
LermanCT I like that they look like mechanical joints like you sometimes see a bit of colour on a car engine
Honestly as someone visually impaired I always really liked it, it was super useful to have that visual shorthand
@@mayday2237 While I agree with OP, I must also agree that the differently colored axles and pins are good for people that are young or visually impaired, they're both a blessing and a curse

I love this figure! I got him in 2007 and unfortunately the connector to the mask broke. I use some easy removable glue to fixure it now.

Red puns were made the standard in bionicle in 2008 -_- that's why Nuparu was spared.

[Ids5621-Retro] Matoro and Hewkii have red pins as well, so back in 2007 they had an option to use them instead of the red ones.
Probably were phasing them out in 2007.

The gaps are to be able to swim better, as it would reduce water resistance.
I do have to say his shield is gapey, but I think I heard somewhere that it's actually an axe so that's why his hand can only go on two directions, sko nothing interferes too much with the swinging, depending on where the hand is placed on his arm
Nuparu and hewkii were my first and only toa marhi sets and I got to say...*I wish nuparu could do the shield flip like he does in the commercial.*
I like how 06's Nuparu had gray/black on his body with the silver being tools.
im not sure why lego doesn't use the black pins for everything but i think its to do with budget, since the red and blue pins are in like 30 times more sets then the black ones, they are cheaper to make and are easily at their disposal

2007 was the last Bionicle year that used black pins. Sets in 2007 used either black or red pins. I believe all sets from 2008 and 2009 used red pins. (The Stars don't count since they were all small Agori builds and had no small pins)

I had an alternate universe headcanon story for 2007 wherein Mahri Nuparu was a robot, thereby justifying his "gaps" and lack of wrist/ankle posability. I also split his shield so he had one half on each hand to be used as melee blades, a far more effective arrangement, I think.

Given that it seems only Nuparu and Hahli (if I recall correctly) had black pins and the rest of Bionicle maintained red pins into today, I can only speculate that the black pins used here was just Lego using up old stock of the old colour of pins so they can fully phase them out. Typically in toy making, a sizable number of common, frequently used parts in toys are often massed produced in VERY large numbers so production runs of various toys take from this larger pool for what they need.
I get if you are going to criticize the red pins clashing with the overall color scheme, since they are part of the being's body, but the blaster isn't, it is just supposed to be a mass produced weapon the Toa Mahri found and decided to use as added fire power, it wouldn't make sense for them to randomly find a container of weapons that match their color scheme, so I think they do a good job at evoking that "add on" look.
Honestly I've always had issue with nuparu's mask. I really don't like that it's silver, and it always seemed obvious to me that the tube should go into the little filter thing that sticks off the bottom of his mask if it had a hole for the tube.

I had the McDonald’s Nuparu Mahri which was one of if not my first bionicle toy, so I’ve always had a bias towards this guy despite never actually having the actual set. I’ve always wanted one as well as a matoro Mahri and also matoro Inika
Great job Eljay. On of the best Mahri in my opinion.
What i've allways not liked about Bionicle is that, every piece or armor is on the front, and the back feels emty.

I actually swapped his black pins for red ones because I personally prefer red pins aesthetically. Say what you will about my shit taste, but that's just my opinion.

How do you guys and gals dust off your Bionicle sets?
Usually, I simply use my hands but the Inika rubber masks are really tough to get spot-free that way. Any recommendations?
Try running cold water over them, then use your hands. That way the dust gets wet and is easier to move on the rubber

A commom complaint is too much grey or silver on a set, so I find the con of less grey to be an odd one. I think its a good amount I wouldn't want more.

Hi Eljay. I have question. I noticed that you didn't review all the Marhi in one video. Was it because of builds of the toa Marhi. I saw you do the toa metru in one video why not the Marhi?
Das101ful The Toa Metru all have pretty much the exact same build template, with a few minor differences like neck position. The Toa Mahri each have their own design, and don't follow a strict template like the Toa Metru.

i need this set for the shield and mask the shield for my Helryx moc and the mask for my Nidhiki moc i am also trying to make the Toa Hagah and even Tuyet i am trying to have all of the Hand of Artakha 3 of the Toa Mangai and the Toa Hagah whoo i cant wait lol

Maybe the red/blue on the pins was because of how small and easy they were to lose, so they used vibrant colors to make them stand out more? Although still, Nuparu kind of breaks that 'rule' I suppose.

His feet seems to have limited articulation, the socket is connected to the leg piece in the another orientation, the feet cannot move sideways much.
i actually had the nuparu 2006 halloween costume, and i wore it multiple times.
You did put a hose into a wrong hole on his back. If you put it right this blue neck pin would not be visible.

Please excuse my ignorance but Nuparu didn't die in the actual storyline did he? The opening scene implies that Nuparu wasn't using his mask, the Volitak, Mask of stealth and that he was dead. Im pretty sure he didn't die in the story but it just confused me that's all.
