I’m getting ready to sew clover seeds in my little experimental saffron patch to see how well they live together. The clover may provide nitrogen to the soil and an umbrella shade that allow the corns to put their energy into growing faster.

    Hi Tara 👋
I'm just checking in with some Saffron news of my own!
I'm also trying to figure out how to grow it, and how to get it to flower too!
I'm in The Central Texas Hill Country,
zone 8B, so I like to think we have similar weather just like where Saffron grows best in the world !
    And I've got good news!
Just 5 days ago, one of my Saffron patches sprouted quite a few Saffron leaves!!
I've got 4 different places where I planted Saffron, way back in 2019.
I wasn't sure which spot it would like the best, so I just tried them all.
And just like you, I had no idea there wouldn't be flowers every year!
Two of the places I planted are in-ground, and 2 others are in pots.
All 4 Saffron patches DID give me flowers the first 2 years, however, the 2nd year's harvest was definitely much smaller.
However, the leaves have grown like gangbusters every year!
But the last 2 years I've not had any flowers at all.
Plus, in both of the in-ground Saffron beds, I'm pretty sure the "night animals" have dug them up and eaten them bcuz last year there weren't even any leaves in those spots.
I have a family of skunks who pass through my yard pretty regularly, but it also could've been racoons, or even opposums who ate them too!
Luckily, I still have 2 pots with Saffron corms in them!
At least I HOPE the corms are still in both pots!
Only one pot is now showing the leaves, who have only just sprouted 5 days ago.
We've been in a drought for 3 years, so when it does rain, it's a big deal around here!
I think it was our last rain that woke up those Saffron who are growing this time.
Since it is November, the temperature of the water from that last rain was quite cold, even though our air temperatures have been unseasonably warm.
So now, here it is toward the end of November, and my Saffron is finally getting started !
I was starting to think it wasn't even going to try this year!
I don't dig my corns up, and then replant it each year.
But I don't think it has ever started growing so late in the year before.
I'm sure it has to do with how hot it's been.
We're expecting a very light frost tonight, but then by Sunday it's going to be 90°f again.
I do have a question about the flowering.
As I recall, the flowers come very soon in the growing process.
But I don't remember exactly HOW soon !
Since I'm not sure if this is "the year" for flowers, I am wondering if you can tell me when will I know the flowers are not going to happen?
I feel like the flowers happen within the first 3-5 days of the leaves coming up.
But maybe I'm not remembering correctly?
The leaves have already been up for 5 days now.
And I'm not yet seeing any signs of any flower buds.
How many more days would you guess there to be until it's time to give up hope for flowers?
I really like all the info in this video about the Saffron!
You're right, it IS hard to find information on it!!

Thanks so much for your detailed account of your saffron growing experience. It was pretty fascinating, and good to know that you had many of the similar experiences that I did. So it does take between 4 to 6 weeks from the time you see the first green, for the flowers to actually appear. I am very surprised that you are seeing saffron corms sprout so late in the year. I would normally not expect that you would get any blooms with the weather having cooled off so much. I usually trigger saffron's growth by manually watering round about the September time frame. But would love to know more about your experience as it develops. Thanks again for checking in!

0:45 YOU ARE!!!!! I bough a crocus bulb from some random dude under a listing that claimed *one* "HUGE" bulb (that was also, incidentally, the price of FOURTEEN OF THEM -- before I learned from your videos of other sources to buy them). It was THE TINYEST crocus I've ever seen in My life. A WASTE OF MONEY..... And quiet as it's kept, I'd rather get My crocus from you anyway, quite frankly.
I'm gonna take My time and find an hour where I can sit through THIS ENTIRE VIDEO because I was JUUUUST ABOUT TO GIVE UP on growing it!

First year where I live the squirrels got every bulb because I didn't cover the pots with wire mesh. Bought again. Second year I got beautiful saffron. Third year...beautiful flowers came up and just about the time the flowers were opening all the way some very hungry deer came by and ate all the flowers. Very frustrating trying to grow them here but will continue trying. I am in zone 5

I sure wish I had this information when I started growing saffron (same time as you). I was so disappointed in the number of blooms I got in Year 2, and then in Year 3 I got zero blooms and all my corms were small and medium size. I figured I had done something very wrong and I gave up on growing saffron, throwing all my corms in the city compost bin. Fortunately this year I gave up on my giving up and bought more corms. Now I know what to expect! Thank you so much.

First of all, thank you for all the efforts in compiling the videos and sharing us your experiences, tips and little dirty secrets in growing saffron. Is it ok to start growing saffron now, as it is already end of October?

    • @GreenLove1
      @GreenLove1  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@keerthyvangara1574 you are so welcome, glad you liked it. As for your question, it really depends on where you live. If in a colder climate, the. Yes it is too late. If a really warm climate like southern California or Arizona, then maybe. You are at the cusp. However, if you do plant now, even if you don't get blooms this year, the corms will bulk up and produce even more blooms next year.

Mam, what you do with the very tiny bulbs that you got from multiplication in the month of September?.
Do you put back into the soil along with big bulbs? Or left in the same multiplication boxes?

I graded everything by size and then planted into different containers and in ground, since I'm trying to understand the behavior of the different size corms. In total I planted about 670. I also gave several away to friends.

@@tushardeshchougule666 you should ideally buy corms right when you are ready to plant them. Most reputable companies will not sell corms out of season since you will need to store it till ready and they cannot guarantee it will grow depending on how you have stored it. In any case I live in the US so will not be able to advise you about where to buy in the UK, sorry!
