  • Have you ever wanted to split your yarn from a 4-ply down to something smaller? Now you can!
I did research for months to figure out how to do it without the mess and taking forever! So grab your drop spindle and ball winder to get started.

So glad I discovered your vid..... it is by far the best way that I have found to deply a skein of yarn by one's self. Thank you.

OMG I have 3 kids... They can do it ALL! BWAHAHAHAHAHA! They're young enough that I can make it sound super fun and not at all a tedious nightmare that I'm absolutely dreading lol

I know right! Imagine the possibilities! I've been really tempted to de-ply a whole skein of yarn. :)

Where can you buy or how can you make a yarn spindle like that? I've never seen one, and you can't follow your recommendations without one.

Evie Hammond You can find them a specialty yarn shops. I’ve never found them in the big chain stores to date. Also if you check the video details there is a link to my website blog with instructions how I made mine. Lastly you can purchase online at Etsy as well. Caution you’ll have way too much fun looking at them!

It comes in really handy when you want to use the same color for something just in a smaller size! I'm working on Sea Starfish and am using a 2-ply yarn. :D

If you put a flat weight on the "straightened bundle", you would not have the snag problem. Good idea if you don't have a Fishing Spinner; which is much easier/faster than this method. Smart move with the cards.....I like using them for my yarns also.

I never thought of that! May have to see if I can find any old fishing equipment.

    Interesting 🤔 😜
I’m though wanting to take a cake of yarn that I had wound up into a cake with 2 separate fingering weight hanks of yarn to combine the 2 different color hanks to make a thicker weight yarn and mixed the 2 colors together that wanted a different effect in colors and weight of the yarn’s…… I’m now wanting to take that cake of yarn I created and separate those 2 strands so I end up with the two original fingering weight yarn hanks I had before I caked them up together.
2 hanks of yarn just like you buy at a yarn shop… basically basic to how I purchased them.
    I don’t want to split the ply’s up …
I don’t have a yarn spindle thingy and don’t really need that for what I’m wanting to do since I don’t want to actually unply them.
Do you or anyone here know how I can do this? I actually have 2 different ball winders and also have a yarn swift.. so is there something I can do with maybe 2 ball winders? 😛
I know this video is old and what I’m asking probably sounds confusing lol 🤪 but if anyone could be some help I would appreciate it. Just hoping you actually see this comment since it is an older video lol 😂

Hi Kriss! Your comment was hard to read. What I got was you have two fingering weight yarns that you want to combine into a new dual color cake to use?
The easiest way I can think of is to crochet the project with holding both colors together. A center pull ball would be the easiest way to do this.
You could use the Yarn Swift to put the two colors on the swift and then use a single ball winder to wind it into a single ball.
Let me know if there are details you can clarify or have additional question! I get notified of any new comments. Even on older videos. :D

No I’m sorry that is actually what I did already some months ago …wound them together. But I never used it and now I’m wanting to unwind the 2 yarns from one another to make them back into their separate original fingering weight yarns like each one was before I put the 2 together.
I know this is confusing.. hard to explain through text lol 😂 but it’s actually very simple but I just not sure how to go about it without tangling them up 🤪
Hopefully you aren’t confused now lol 😜
Thanks for trying to help 🙏🏻

@@KrissD.if that’s the case then you may want to try putting the combined ball on the floor or in a bowl and then use the two yarn winders to return them to separate balls.

So here's what I will do. I'm going to write the post and describe how I made mine and see if any of the TH-cam videos I used as reference are available to show. I'll come back and link anything I use here.

By the time I go and find everything that you suggest, I could have the yarn split. Ive been crocheting and knitting for 58 years and have never needed a spindle. Who has a spindle? LMBO I use the woman's suggestion (you know, the one you made fun of?) with the weight, only instead of standing on my deck, I actually stood up from my desk chair and just kept moving the weight down. Yeah, it was that easy. I've used my method for years.
Meanwhile, while you're playing with your spindle and yarn winder, I took a nap. Didn't take a rocket scientist.

      Susy Mayberry
      Hi Susy!
      Thank your comment.
This video was made from an idea I found useful and wanted to share with others with things I had on hand.
I did not, however, make fun of the earlier poster as you suggested. I did actually try out her idea as I mentioned wanting to. It was never intended to make fun of it.
I would appreciate it if you would be kind to those of us who don’t have your experience in the crochet and knitting world just because we came to an idea from a different perspective.
