Satch is 67. He can shred better than 99.9999% of guitar players alive or dead and has forgotten more about guitar than some of the best ever knew. He will have off days but it literally doesn't matter if he forgot how to play today, he's a living legend.

Agree to all of that BUT..... He should have "and maybe did" realize that taking this "reunion/tribute" VH gig would inevitably lead to a hell storm of comparison/criticism, hate etc.... Other than the possible money to be made there are no upsides to even trying.

I'm that .111111111% of guitarists who can play everything Joe satriani ever played just like him but he wouldn't even know where to find the front door on my playing. Fuck Joe satriani and these fools talking on this set. I wish I knew Sammy Hagar so he could fire Joe satriani... I was playing Van Halen when Van Halen started playing Van Halen. I should be writing a new album for Sammy... I wish I knew Alex so I could jam with him and write some songs... I think I could get him to go buy another set of drums and record a new album with Sammy and me. There's just not a nice way to tell you guys that Joe satriani sucks at playing Van Halen

The most bizarre part of all that is…what were the odds that they would ever even play “Mean Streets” anyway? I don’t see Sammy ever singing that. So if it wasn’t even in the potential setlist why go there?
It seemed like it was this innocent question from Howard (if there is such a thing) and Joe just answered honestly.
Personally I think that Howard appearance was a colossal mistake.
Of course now the tour isn’t an Eddie tribute anyway and has just turned into a Sammy tribute instead.

6:04 I agree with editing but also Nuno made the point that Sammy kind of threw them (esp. Joe) under the bus. They had barely rehearsed it! Also agree that it is super-douchey to go after an icon like Joe.

  • @weeklyfascination

Eddie himself even talked about doing covers, saying that no matter what he does, it always ends up sounding like Eddie.
There are some guys out there that really nail the Eddie vibe like Jason Deraps, but Joe brings the star power that nobody else has. And he's been with Sammy for years, so it only makes sense that they'd do a tribute to Van Halen.
AND this is the only way we can hear the Van Hagar songs live. Why not?

Joe is an incredible technician and virtuoso.... HOWEVER.... every player will have a challenge from time to time playing either THEIR OWN MUSIC they worked hard to create and haven't played for a long time.... and of course there will be a challenge playing OTHER PEOPLE'S hard and challenging work.... it has NOTHING to do with how good you are.... are how good you're not.... even Joe said Steve would be able to play Power Cosmic better than what he can play it nowadays..... there are many variables as to what you will play well or not well on a given day.... people criticising other people's playing are not getting what composing and playing is all about.
I HAVE TO SAY.... PHIL X.... is someone I've listened to lately and have been completely impressed.... he's got it all... originality and chops, feel... it's all there.... HE'S AWESOME.....!

    • @isaiahmarquez9717
      @isaiahmarquez9717 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Exactly! I can’t play Eddie’s stuff very well at all…..but I can play Yngwie’s stuff (not quite up to warp speed but it’s going well). Strange how my mind and fingers can do one fairly easily and not the other. Like Eddie’s legato triplets to picked triplets back to legato triplets back to picked….that kicks my ass backwards! But like pedal tone string skipping a la Yngwie, no problem.
My mind just does not wrap itself around EVH’s playing style. But it takes to Yngwie’s like a duck to water.
I’m sure others have the opposite problem. And some have no problem with either. Go figure.

5:25 IMPORTANT POINT to make is that in an interview Satriani told you that he intentionally held himself back from playing EVH music because he didn’t want to “accidentally steal” anything. He respectfully added that working on it was a conflict in his brain as he was hearing someone else’s style and not his own. He showed nothing but respect for EVH. And these “INFLUENCERS” probably have been playing EVH for many many years and were looking for an opportunity to elevate their own egos by bashing someone who could run circles around them any day of the week! Joe was kind enough to show his progress as he was still working on EVH stuff. He could have easily gave himself more time by saying that they were saving that performance for a live show. But this humble legend has no problem showing his human side! I LOVED seeing him “work” on EVH moves and his child like smiles when he nailed an EVH riff. He was having fun like we all did the first time we played a popular song for the first time! Awesome to she that! Not cool that these “influencers” attacked him to serve their own ego!

    Yeah the criticism is pathetic.
    1) he hasn't even really learned the songs yet (at the time of the show being filmed).
    2) Apparently, he was given no notice that he was playing and didn't rehearse.
    3) If he decides to play something sounding like himself, that is fine, otherwise just get a session player to do note for note.
I think he sounded great all things considered

So many people just don’t think before they make a negative comment about Satch on Stern ….. Obviously they recently decided to do a VH Tribute Show and Joe hasn’t even started to Rehearse / Practice any VH material … and he’s busy playing his Own Music ….. I’m sure with proper rehearsals and jamming Joe and the rest of the Band will do just fine

It's all on Sammy for putting Joe on the spot like that, Sammy basically says there's all these guys that can copy Edwards playing but you need a guy like Joe that can kill it on everything, then the have him play something he isn't that familiar with playing, so the guys Sammy just said can't cut it got offended. Joe's tone, style and musical sense is pretty different than what Ed did, his sound is very different and because Sammy can't sing those songs in the Key they're supposed to be in of course, it doesn't quite work... They should have done two Sammy songs and one Van Halen song like finish what you started that slightly different version might have been pretty cool. I feel bad for Joe...he never should have been put in that position... when the TH-cam videos pop up recorded on smartphones Joe's going to get hammered by the fans no matter what he does.... Edward was loved by fans posthumously his legacy is untouchable.....

That’s a good point, that song line up would have maybe worked a bit better especially given the key they were being performed in due to Sammy’s vocals😯👍However, I think Joe is going to wow all the naysayers on this upcoming tour😬👍🎸

I still have many artists on my “Must see Live!” Bucket list, some, sadly, are no longer a possibility. But, I have seen Joe S. Twice! Once in ‘88’ in PDX, and once in Denver at an “open air” with Dream Theater and King’s X. Nobody sounds better live, than JS!! His Tone, the Vibe, even outdoors, he is just so good, and the musicians around him so locked in, but also laidback and fun!! P.S. DT and King’s X, were Great also. We were early, and heard Dug, Ty, and Jerry’s sound check, MASSIVE! Just gotta see Phil and the Drills now!

  • @jsk8et

That was such a bummer. For one, hearing Satch struggle is only deferential to EVH. Also, EVH is so huge that Satch probably spent some time and thought on how NOT to play too much like him and be his own artist. And third, what guitar player gets anything right every time? And also, do these fans think EVH would have enjoyed seeing them tear down another player? These are some of the same guys that try to tell Wolfgang how to honor his own father.
I hate to see Satch take an L on anything, but the “community” took a bigger L and made a mountain out of a molehill on this one.
Respect to Satch. Respect to EVH’s legacy.

It's a fools errand to even try to 'fill his shoes' but if you are gonna attempt it I would suggest that you need to be a lot more prepared and rehearsed than Joe was. I think the reaction was as extreme as it was because the attempt seemed slapdash and consequently some felt it was maybe a little disrespectful.

I think Sammy should have picked someone that was maybe already known to do Van Halen already, instead of having to work it up. Paul Gilbert, Phil X, Deraps, Dweezil Zappa, Marty 5150, etc, etc. Wolfgang is the obvious choice except that he wants no part of any of this. Some of these guys LIVE to play Van Halen stuff.
Joe is a great guitarist but he isn’t known for playing any Van Halen stuff. I’m sure he’ll work it up just fine. He’s a pro. But there was an easier path down this road. Hell, Phil X could have sang the DLR songs that Sammy is loath to sing.

Today’s “influencers” are just yesterday’s music critics. They’re players that couldn’t get famous via their playing so they’re gonna critique everybody else. Buying a social media account with a bunch of followers takes the place of them having any real talent. One thing they all have in common is that outside of social media, nobody has ever heard of them. They are fun to mock though.🤷‍♂️😆

The internet has turned a big part of the guitar community into a shit show of hypocrites that can’t make a name for themselves criticizing the ones that have.

example bazillion of how dumb the internet is- hobbyist guitar dork on the internet taking jabs at Satriani, like he's gonna go worry about a 45 year old EVH stunt like these people have been for the last 45 years. It's a silly, jealous lot

Mmm..So, Eddie Van Halen. Was a "pure style "guitar player. Not so much a traditional technical player.... To copy these types of guitar players. Requires the person copying to be a chameleon player... I find chameleon players don't truly have their own style.
