    A movie with such a cultural impact, you would be hard pressed to find someone who isn't annoyed with at least one of the things this particular film has brought us. Be it the red pill blue pill dichotomy, bullet time or a generation of teenagers who espouse philosophical statements while having absolutely no idea what any of them mean. Despite this, from the very same group of people you would have a hard time finding anyone who honestly disliked the movie itself... so what is The Matrix? That is the question now, innit?

    According to an interview with Will Smith, the reason he turned down the role of Neo was that when the Wachowskis pitched him the movie, all they did was give him a very vague description of doing a kick in bullet time. Nothing about the story or character he would be playing, just something along the lines of “imagine you can jump and kick in slow motion.” If that was their whole pitch, I don’t blame him for turning it down.

    This movie was a masterpiece when it came out (what a perfect year for it as well, 1999, the very edge of the millennium), and it has only gotten better with age.

      The fact that there are an negative reviews is surprising to hear - everyone I know loves this movie and I could never figure out why. I don't think it's good. Never did. Too pretentious and the stunts are so off-the-wall that I can't suspend disbelief even knowing that they're in a VR world where physics don't exist. I like a deep, thought-provoking movie but the dialogue comes off to me as more like it's trying too SOUND mysterious and profound while actually saying bupkis.

    In hindsight I'd have to say The Matrix is kinda like the RoboCop of the 90s. Though it came out in 99 to be fair.
    Both were high caliber cinematography sci-fi action that had a take on social issues and identity that spawned a rush of sequels, media projects, and rip-offs and can be pointed at as an icon of the decade they came out in.
    Though Matrix took more of a philosophical bent to tackling its topics and RoboCop had a mix of parody and quiet angst that never took itself too seriously but could hit some powerful notes.

    • @wugglesx
      @wugglesx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      matrix kinda wants to make your head hurt a little or have you rewatch, instead robot cop wants to make you life even though such tragic things are happening then also or rewatch xD . both are the types of movies that you'll notice different things in a second viewing and can watch it in a different light

    • @stefanforrer2573
      @stefanforrer2573 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      but that philosophical approach is just wafer thin coating on the good old and frankly tired tropes of the "messiah" and "love conquers everything" stories.... which in my opinion makes robocop far superior

      @@stefanforrer2573 I was going to say, everyone talks about how philosophical the matrix is but there's not really any actual philosophical discussion in any of them. Not many people talk about how Agent Smith wanted to escape the Matrix. We don't see that with any Agents. Like who is Agent Smith? I actually want a movie or series about him. Like Neo and the rest of the gang are humans. They aren't exactly machines or codes programmed to follow and obey the Matrix like the Agents. So I think it is more fascinating when a Agent wants to go against the Matrix than a human.

    I don't know about anyone else, but I think The Matrix works better as a stand-alone film without having any sequels. I actually would've preferred an open-ended conclusion that the first film would've provided if it hadn't been for the sequels. While I do like the first movie, I wasn't as impressed with it as most people are. That's not to say it isn't impressive or high quality, just that I didn't get as swept up in it at the time. I would have to give it more of a four out of five.
    I know that Keanu Reeves got a lot of flack for his acting in this movie, but I do still find he shows a lot of likeability. While I do like him best as John Wick, I think it's fair to say that he was always a likeable actor and human being, even if it took a while for that side of him to be fully acknowledged on a wide scale.
    I feel that the movie Dark City did this concept better, but given how much that film inspired The Matrix (even using some of the same stage) I think me saying so is likely no surprise to anyone as I'm far from the only person to bring Dark City up when discussing The Matrix and how it compares. In all honesty I actually didn't even know of Dark City until long after I had seen the first Matrix movie at least a few times, not to mention I didn't see the first Matrix movie until a year or so after it came out.
    My overall point is that even when compared to other films with a similar concept, I do think The Matrix has a firm hold of its rightful place as a good film and it's interesting to see how it still has rippling affects on our society today. I may not have the most popular take or perspective on it, but it's undeniably a good movie worth watching.

    🤣🤣🤣Just kidding! Most of the "bland" performance given by Keanu I feel can be attributed to the directing choices from the Wachowskis, like with George Lucas and Jake Lloyd as Anakin. I still feel Jake Lloyd was a miscast, and could've been spared the grief of fan backlash, but again, it wasn't his fault for Phantom Menace.

I remember Linkara told people in his review of the comic adaptation of The Last Jedi, that it's okay not to like or watch the movies, that everybody has their preferred media of Star Wars. Some will prefer the video games, the comic books, the animated series, etc. But the ones who go bats-t are the ones who *solely* see the movies, and won't accept any deviation from the story "they wanted" rather than a thought provoking expectation playing new direction. In Greek mythology, Morpheus is the god of dreams. This is ironic, considering Morpheus' role in the film is to "awaken" people from their "dream states" within the Matrix.
    With the exception of the call traces, the glyphs on the computer screens that represent the Matrix code consist of reversed letters, numbers, and Japanese Katakana characters.
    By the middle of 2002, the famous "Bullet Time" sequence had been spoofed in over twenty different movies.
    According to the Wachowskis, all animals in the Matrix universe are computer generated images.
    All the color blue was sucked out of the exterior shots to convey how grim the world of the Matrix actually is.
    Laurence Fishburne said that Morpheus was like being Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader in one character.
    The Wachowskis have said that the popular Japanese manga and the film of the same name, Ghost in the Shell (1995), were big influences on the development of the film.
    The name of the company where Thomas Anderson works is Metacortex. The roots of this word are meta-, which according to Webster's means "going beyond or higher, transcending," and -cortex, which is "the outer layer (boundary) of gray matter surrounding the brain." Thus, Metacortex is "transcending the boundaries of the brain," which is precisely what Neo proceeds to do.
    The only film in the trilogy where Neo utilizes firearms. It's also the only one released in the 20th century
    Neo is often referred to as the "One", which is an anagram of "Neo".
    The movie draws inspiration from Plato's Allegory of the Cave.
    Body count: 39.
    Michael Hutchence was cast in a major role, but died by suicide only three days after learning he had got the role.
    According to Marcus Chong, the actors and actresses were encouraged to make their characters stoic and repressed.
    Matrix' is the late Latin word for 'womb' - which would make "The Matrix has you..." an apt warning with a double meaning, referring to both the computer-generated dream world, known as The Matrix, that imprisons the human mind, and also to the cocooned physical state of the human body which is being simultaneously harvested for bioelectric power in an artificial womb.
    Takes place 6 months before The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003).
    Agent Brown and Agent Jones never take off their sunglasses.
    Keanu Reeves slipped and fell over during filming of the lobby gunfight.
    Neo name is an anagram for One, which is the name he is called throughout the movie.

      @@GriffinPilgrim The Key guy is an awakened person who wasn't pulled, essentially a sleeper. The area he affects is very small and out of the way to avoid arousing suspicion. Large scale efforts in public environments that the agents would need to utilize (which they can't. They operate within certain parameters) would cause suspicion, which would cause more awakenings, which would require greater containment efforts, which would arouse more suspicion, etc. Losing a few power cells by shooting them is fine as people wouldn't clue in. If the machines have dealt with Neo six times before then why don't they know he's the One immediately in the first movie? If the machines have protocols in place for the One then why does he crash the system in the phone booth at the end of the first movie? If the machines want Neo to meet the architect then why do they make it so difficult to reach him? They had no idea that Trinity would sacrifice herself. If there are oceans of molten lava deep within the Earth which make it too hot to survive then how was Zion built at all? The short 'Bits and pieces of information' in the Animatrix shows that Zion knows the entire history of how the Matrix came to be exactly so why does Morpheous say we only have bits and pieces of information in the first movie? No, you have the full history. If Neo as the One was so critical to the machines' plans then why did they let him almost fall off the building and die in the first movie? If the machines know that Neo is the One then why do they care about arresting Morpheous at all? They should just grab Neo and take him right to the architect.
