Free Sand & Clay from "Washing" Soil

  • Harvest free sand and clay from your native soil by "washing" it with water. Mix one part soil with two parts water and let it settle to separates the particulate by size. The larger rocks and coarse sand will sink quickly, while they clay will settle more slowly in a vein above the sand. There may form a layer of silt and mud above the clay if it settles too long. If that happens just stir the mixture again. Pour off the floating organic matter and dissolved minerals onto the garden or compost pile to re-use the water. Repeat this washing process until you have clean sand or clay.

Thank you. Exactly what I wanted to learn. I appreciate and like your presentation, especially without any music. Cheers

Thanks. I was using this to get sand for casting without money, and this was really helpful!👌

Cool! Easy to upscale this too, you can do a tiny batch or a huge one, always works great.

I'm pretty sure you're a little mixed up. Silt is coarser than clay. The layer that settled out was likely silt, not clay. Clay stays in suspension for a considerable amount of time, and when it settles out you're generally going to be left with more or less clear water.

Your right, thanks, silt indeed has larger particles than clay.

Yep, this works great! You can reuse the water too until it gets too muddy. Good luck!

If you ever look for just clay the best place to look is around river beds and pounds, pretty much anywhere where water has been flowing or sitting for a long period of time, me and my cousin are planning on starting a small business where we process and sell clay but idk how it’ll go, it’s just a project we’re wanting to try

Make sure you harvest responsibly, many shorelines are protected.

I was doing this-washing soil to get sand... but then, I did some research and found out "it is generally not recommended to use sand that has been filtered from soil as an aggregate in concrete or mortar, even if the clay and organic matter have been removed. Sand that has been separated from soil in this way is likely to contain impurities and may not have the necessary properties to provide a strong and durable bond with the cement. In order to make strong and durable concrete or mortar, it is important to use clean, graded sand that is free of impurities. Sand that has been specially processed for use in construction, such as pit sand or crushed stone, is a better choice for use as an aggregate in concrete or mortar. These types of sand are strong, hard, and have a rough surface, which helps to create a strong bond with the cement."

If you want to make concrete with low quality sand it's still possible, just don't use it to make a 3 story building.
      1. mix %20 low quality sand and %80 clay you can shape it and place it over a campfire to make terracotta which can be ground into dust.
      2. Take wood ash or volcanic ash and add a little water to form it into a ball that fits in the palm of your hand, then put the ball in the heart of your campfires coals until its completely whitened and begins to glow red, IMMEDIATELY place the ball into water to create a chemical reaction that will give you a good base for your concrete.
      3. Mix your refined wood ash into the terracotta dust until you can easily form it into the shape you want, let sit and dry for at least 3 days and you will end up with a water-resistant concrete, similar to the kind used by the romans.
      Tips:
      1. Using the same species of wood for your wood ash will create a stronger bond than using multiple different kinds
      2. You can cook down seashells and animal bones to dust and simply add around %20 mix to your final concrete solution for added strength
      3. Use crushed quarts as an alternative to sand, or use them in conjunction for even more strength
      4. You can use crushed glass as an aggregate for your concrete, similar to sand and quartz (remember to wear a respirator or continuously wet the glass to prevent glass dust from stirring up and damaging your lungs)

You're not getting 'dissolved nutrients' in that water that's just the lightest clay.

@sprock yes and phosphates. Add baking soda or ash to get phosphorus and other insoluble nutriets to be water soluble and usable for the plants.

So I was about to buy sand but then I was thinking I could get it for free so I went outside and did the same thing you did and washed dirt until the water became clear and what was left was sand

Some misinformation in this video. Clay stays in suspension in the water for sometimes days (after a good shake) , the silt is coarser, settles out in about 1/2 an hour, sand settles out in minutes.

Sigh. Just like every video on the subject, all the same words, and same topics, and same time wasting and not one word on how to clear the fine organics that half stick in your clay and sometimes float. I tried flooding it out slowly, but then every time I mixed the same amount would return. So it was a never ending battle. Eventually I put it through cloth and only the finest clay came through leaving a significant amount behind.

    • @GiveitaGrow
      @GiveitaGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

There is an ancient technique of suspending the clay in the water, ideally the organics would either float or sink, and pouring out the slurry into an evaporating pool. I have never tried it but that could help.

You must love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. You must love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus the anointed is Lord! Repent and be baptized and believe the Gospel.

Yes be baptized in Jesus name as no one was ever baptized in the titles of God in the Bible. Must receive the Holy Ghost! Find an Acts 2:38 church! Lord bless. Enjoy your pearl.
