- Guru Dutt & Waheeda Rehman's first meeting happened in Hyderabad in 1955. Guru Dutt had gone there to meet his film distributor and Waheeda Rehman came to Hyderabad to promote her Telugu film Rojulu Marayi. Guru Dutt liked Waheeda Rehman's performance in Rojulu Marayi and offered her a role in CID (1956). Waheeda Rehman made her Bollywood debut with CID (1956) and started her walk to stardom. Before meeting Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman had never heard about him. Guru Dutt gave a bigger role to Waheeda Rehman in the film Pyaasa (1957). Waheeda Rehman and Guru Dutt were involved in a romantic relationship that destroyed Guru Dutt's marital life.

Had the distributor not invited Guru Dutt to Hyderabad to see the super hit movie, which we now know that he did not like it at all. Had Guru Dutt not accepted his distributor's invitatiion, had the driver not met with an accident, then Guru Dutt would have never stayed in Hyderabad for 3 days and he would never had met Waheeda Rehman who had become so popular with a single dance in the Telugu movie - Rojnumarai.
The most interesting part is that neither Waheeda Rehman nor Guru Dutt were familiar to Hyderabad, yet Hyderabad bacame the lucky place for both of them.
You have very rightly said " The days surely changed for Waheeda Rehmaan ".
Her small role in CID and her superhit song left a very strong impression and she got herself established in Bollywood.
The relationship between Guru Dutt Waheeda Rehmaan can be called the best definition of Platonic Relationship.

Rahoul, thanks for the very well researched story on 2 of my all time favorite film personalities. Waheedaji is from Hyderabad though she grew up in Chennai owing to her father being a civil servant. Minor beef with your Telugu pronunciation ….it’s Missamma(one composite word) and rojulu maaraayi(ma mein bhi deergha maatra). Guru Dutt was unsure of Waheedaji’s Hindi speaking skills and made her converse to ensure that she ‘does’ know…also wanted to change her name to ‘Rosie’ but Waheedaji stood her ground! Then we know ‘waqt ne kiya, kya haseen sitam’

I remember vaguely Vinod Khanna in CID. How I missed the natural beauty of all times Waheeda Rehman in CID is strange. 🤣 I must watch the film. Very interesting tale of the two meeting within a number of consequences. It was meant to happen. Thanks Rahoul 😊

Guru Dutt perhaps wanted to marry Waheeda Rehman but it could not happen and Guru Dutt was in depression & at last he gave up his life...

I always admire your research but for this video I'm disappointed with your pronunciation towards the telugu movies you have mentioned. Firstly it's not Missiamma, it was one of the best telugu movies and it's called Missamma. Secondly, rojulu maaraaayiii (days have changed), waheeda rehmans debut film. You are too good with Bengali language. Please don't disappoint your South Indian fans.
