City was known as Peking in 1910... correct? Noticed the people smoking in a certain kind of way of holding and inhaling the material... were they smoking opium? Thanks!

I wonder if, 115 years from now, there will be someone as passionate as yourself, who will begin the task of preserving and restoring all the damaged and lost digital media from the first quarter of the 21st Century? Thankyou for providing such an important social archive, showing us the realities of life, for the people of that time. Thankyou for everything you do on this channel. Peace All

It is incredible to believe that every man, woman, child, and animal in this film is now dead. Our time on this Earth is fleeting.

Nass, Hi My friend. Love this! Another fantastic video by you. I am interested in History. Some Chinese men here are still wearing pigtails which was forced on them by the emperor. But at around 1912 the Qing dynasty ended and many Asian male students were going west to America and Europe to study and they did not wear pigtails much anymore.

@@TheDanEdwards What? The Communists hid in the mountains and let Chiang’s army take on the Japanese army, then defeated them. Then decades of mass slaughter, torture, “re-education”, the scourge of the Red Guards… over 70 MILLION DEAD, all during peacetime. That’s Communism.

I'm not an expert but I did take Chinese History in college in the 1970s. Peking and Shanghai were Mercantilist trading centers. Significant British Empire influence. This film is just before the postWWI upheavals. Mao Tse Tung came to power and the Communists defeated the Nationalists in 1949 with the last few Nationalists fleeing to Formosa (Taiwan). The Chinese Communist Party doesn't recognize the Taiwanese state and threatens reunification by force.
I wonder if the people seen smoking here are smoking Opium. The two Opium Wars with the British were historically significant. Some think the modern day export of precursor chemicals for Fentanyl is a way of payback to the West for the Opium issues of the past.
