I am embarrassed to say, I cannot hear the bugle group playing "Sunset", without welling up with tears. It is the most emotive piece of music I know of and when it is played by the Royal Marine Bands, it is doubly so. And this isn't because I'm an old soldier - too young for conscription - or an ex Marine, it is because I am British and I think of all those we have lost in my lifetime and before. It even happened back in 1999 at the infamous 'Last Royal Tournament'.
My wife and I had taken the kids to one of the very last shows (not THE last) and I remember the massed RM bands were paraded opposite bands from Italy, Poland, France (I think) and the USMC. Don't get me wrong, the other bands were terrific, but when the full Royal Marine bands played, it was; "Eat your heart out, US Marine Corps." And then it all went quiet and 'our' buglers played 'Sunset' I was in floods of tears and I'm sure I wasn't the only one.
I did it again when the Field Gunners marched out towing their guns. Why is it the Country that claims to be the 'greatest country on the planet' have to have their name all over the place, while we have; The Royal Air Force; The Royal Navy and The Royal Armoured Corps or The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, for example. Why? Because we don't need to say. Everybody already KNOWS.

The Sousaphones and white trousers were the first clue, then the closeup of the cap badges and rank insignia clinched it! Very nice to see and hear the combined bands.

This was from 'Beating Retreat' in 2014 when the USMC Band and the Dutch Marine Band came over to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Royal Marines being founded.
It was a staggering show.
