Ravine Flyer II Review, Waldameer | Amazing Gravity Group Wooden Roller Coaster

  • Ravine Flyer II at Waldameer is one of the best wooden roller coasters in the world. This Gravity Group wood coaster has an aggressive layout on a hillside that also passes over a highway. The planning for Ravine Flyer II began in the 1990s and it took almost 2 decades for the coaster to finally be built, but it was worth the wait!

    I'll say it for the 1000th time...so underrated! The coaster that started my channel! Amazing drop, great ejector pops and some of the best night rides I've experienced. I've been riding it since 2009, and It's only gotten better with age. I've never had to wait more than about 15 minutes for it.

    I rode this coaster this past weekend on my visit to Waldameer. Rode in the second car of the train. It was in the evening well after the coaster was warmed up...about an hour before park closing time. I know what you mean when you talked about the 2nd drop and airtime. Even with my lap bar and seat belt as tight as they could be I still got some decent floater airtime on the first drop and bunny hills... and mild ejector on the 2nd drop. When It was all over I came off the coaster smiling....& even gave a fist bump to one of the ride attendants.

    Better drop than Voyage, stronger air than Voyage. But I always say what you do, the second half sort of falls flat. Still an amazing ride. The blue train was running way stronger than red this summer.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad I rode in the blue train then! I wish the ride stayed down in the ravine longer to maintain its speed, but I realize the park only had so much space available and they did what they could to give the ride length.

    I loved Waldameer and this ride! I arrived after 4pm, so the ride was fully warmed up. Even with the late arrival, I got 15 rides in 3.5 hours, in addition to plenty of rides in the rest of the park. Ravine Flyer II is my kind of ride! I love a ride that is unique, gives great views, is aggressive, and has some good force to it. I don't even mind the parts where it loses its speed. It does crawl on the last couple elements, but so does El Toro. Ravine Flyer II is near perfection for what I like. I always rank rides based on how much I enjoy it, and I actually enjoyed this more than any other ride in Pennsylvania, and it's in my overall top 20.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually rank this coaster very close to El Toro. Both are amazing when they're at their best, but both have decent bits around their amazing parts. But the setting is one thing that separates Ravine Flyer II.

      Waldameer is my home park, and I consider myself an amateur historian especially when it comes to Waldameer. I believe that the roller coaster was there first, then either an existing footpath was turned into the road, or the road was put through virgin ravine. The support structure that can be seen in the few existing photos of Ravine Flyer was added to support the weight of the now suspended track.

    Only thing is i hate the PTC trains. Love everything else. Truly a world class wooden coaster and its only 2 hours from me in Pittsburgh. Id love to see it get millennium flyer trains from GCI but no way GCI puts their trains on a Gravity Group coaster. Timberliners are very heavy so thats why it doesn’t have them.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always heard Timberliners are lighter than PTCs, which makes it a problem for them to complete layouts that weren't designed for them. I suspect Timberliners would struggle to make it back to the station considering how much speed this ride loses at the end.

  • @Lucky_9705
    @Lucky_9705 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think a major solution to the slow second half that this park could consider is either to invest in some track work to shrink down some of the slower and more drawn out elements so that the ride better maintains its speed.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you still would burn speed going into the final brake because of the elevation change.

      Just made the trip yesterday. About 2 hours and 20 minutes to get there from Pittsburgh. Nice park, not too big, or too small. Ravine Flyer II was really good. Better than the woodies at my home park (Kennywood), but rougher. Not a knock on it at all. I’ll give anyone riding it the same info a rider I met while up there gave me. Don’t try to hold on and brace yourself. You’ll get beat up 🤕. So raise those arms and let it take you. Hahahahaha

    I’m actually reviewing this ride, but this is the first ride that I feel like u didn’t describe the ride experience correctly, I mean the parts that u said are good were good and the parts that u said are bad were bad, and u described the pacing really well, but this ride doesn’t have ejector like u said, still rly good sustained stronger floater and flojector, but def not ejector, and u never rly talked about the laterals on this ride, mainly the turn after the first drop, the s hill thing after the first speed hill and the s hill towards the end, with that said still great review but my experience might have just been a bit different

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The one major ejector moment is the first drop, but a few of the other pops are what I call ejector pops. The airtime isn't sustained, but it's very abrupt. I know others may classify that a bit differently. Looking forward to your review!
      The only laterals that really stood out to me were the first part of the turnaround, but there definitely were some lesser laterals but I couldn't recall where all of them occurred.
