    If you would have told someone back when transistor radios were first coming out that, in the future, people would be slapping plastic ersatz tubes and transformers on them for aesthetics, they would probably call you crazy.

    The incandescent light bulb switch refers to new products entering the country. Stores have large warehouses of merchandise that will last years already in the states. This is why they are still being sold.

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ban actually goes by lumens rather than wattage, so while most 75-watt incandescent bulbs were banned as of January 1st, 2013, the specified range was 1050 lumens and up, but the 75-watt bulbs I showed in the video only put out 1000 lumens, so they actually were banned as of January 1st, 2014. Nonetheless, 4½ years is a long time for a retailer to still have remaining inventory of a common household item. Online retailer 1000bulbs.com estimated that they would only have about a six-month to one-year supply of each lumens/wattage range of incandescent bulbs after they were banned.

    • @KRAFTWERK2K6

      Yeah, even the C64 Plug'n Play Joystick had a screw for that battery compartment. Never understood why… a simple lock-up mechanism would have been just fine. Heck, even these little LCD games from the late 80s, that we had in my family back then, had little screws for the button-cell battery compartment cover. Luckily those never really leaked badly and didn't damage the contacts.

    it very likely IS a trf on am, using a zn414 equivalent chip, ta7642, and fm probably a single chip with 'pulse counting' detector, such as tda7000 or a more modern variant, using only one tuned circuit,....i bought a couple of cheapo radio kits from banggood and one uses that idea., the other is a proper superhet (am only)

    • @andygozzo72
      @andygozzo72 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i built a zn414 based radio some years back but came up with an alternative way of using it, getting better results, normally its run at a fixed voltage, and volume controlled in the af stages, but this way strong signals can swamp it out, i've found running it with the af amp stages at fixed high gain, but controlling the volume by varying the supply to the zn414 seems better, only problem is theres a fair amount of operating the volume control when tuning from stations of varying strength, like with most trf valve/tube sets..

    You can't buy standard light bulbs by the wattage ratings any more, better to go by the lumen rating, I've seen 100watt bulbs, and other wattages that were "out lawed", being sold but if you look at the lumen ratings most aren't even close to what they are supposed to be. Example a normal good 100watt bulb should have a lumen rating around 1650-1710 lumens.

    Can you do a teardown video of this I want to see if it’s an actual tube radio

    *Next time can you take it apart? I would like to see what chip it uses or how it has such bad tuning. it could be a blob chip but maybe not.*

      Radiotvphononut already did a video about this radio in which he took it apart.

    I remember seeing these in Walgreens more than a decade ago and somewhere else in my recent travels. They may still be available new. I believe these are "gutless wonders" like the tiny submini-boomboxes of 20 years ago. No selectivity and terrible FM performance.

      Yeah, think I remember radiotvphononut, who did a video on one, stating that he bought it there for $10 (well over a decade ago).

    I wonder if there even is a market for actual modern "vacuum tube" radios, but what would be the point of it, anyone with a vacuum tube amp could hook up a radio and have the same effect, probably

      They can use rough service bulbs which are still allowed to be sold.

    Vweslife if you go to dollar tree they have 100watt bulbs by sunbeam. Cool radio I agree lgr would like this woodgrain. I like woodgrain myself and tube amps etc even though they not real. Very cool.

    Are radio stations everywhere like required to play the same Journey songs every single day or something? It is like classic rock stations just gave up in the 90s and never changed their playlists.

    Why wouldn’t they make a real tube radio today? How hard could it be?

      Not hard, but expensive.

      They make tube audio amps for guitars and headphones so amplifier tubes are still made but I don't know about the other tubes that would be needed.

    • @snarfusmaximus
      @snarfusmaximus 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Guitar amps use triodes in the preamp. For a decent superhet, you would need a pentagrid and/or some RF pentodes which I don't think have been made for many years.

    • @dougbrowning82
      @dougbrowning82 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the 1960's era radio tubes are still available. For AM you need a 6BE6/12BE6 pentagrid converter, a 6BA6/12BA6 IF amplifier, 6AV6/12AV6 detector-pre amp, and any rectifier/power amp combination. For FM, 6AU6/12AU6 RF/IF amps, twin triode oscillator/mixer/AFC/MPX tubes, a 6AL5/12AL5 detector/discriminator, and any combination of rectifier/ pre amp/power amp tubes. Most of the signal level tubes are under $10 each.
