I'm amazed by your ability to continue churning out lists related to prog rock.
I had no idea. Still don't care for the genre but I'm impressed by the sheer volume of that stuff.
Andy single - handedly revived Prog Rock 😄
😂
I went to the avant premiere of this masterpiece a couple of days ago. Believe me, this is better than anything you've seen so far. Creativity at its fullest.
LOL I may have also caught that same sneak peak release as you, beyond epic, I had the same feeling after completing a great series or film trilogy!!! PS, I'm a patron who contributed, but hiding here behind a "cloak of anonymity" with a different account ;-)
@@aka98765 But if you're a patron you should have access to the whole thing. It's one of the many perks of being an AE patron!
@@jdmresearch I sure do!!! and the metadata was made available :-) 🙂
@@aka98765 I helped with some of the code, made available somewhere... I won't give more details so we can keep the anonymity...😆
This video was a masterpiece. Don't think I've ever sat through a whole 3 hour YT video before. Brilliant.
No argument about Yes being ranked ONE. The other day I was listening to 'And You And I.' After listening to it for over 50 years, I actually like it more in 2024. The arrangement is an absolute masterpiece.
There’s ranking and there’s ranking. This is truly Prog ranking. 👍
Epic stuff, beautifully edited. 😁
This was an epic... what great patrons indeed!
Wow!! What an epic masterpiece this was. An amazing video, Andy! Very well done! What an effert this was, I imagine. Glad to be a part of this incredible group of people and honored to have contribution here with the all the greats! I'm happy to do a 1 minute shoot at any of these 30 bands anytime you need! Thanks, Andy. You're the man.
Great video Andy, it is obvious you put in a lot of effort, thank you.
Next level production quality and editing. By far your best vid yet Andy! Massively entertaining, clinically insane funny, intimately personal, and deeply informative.
I am only half way through this and am enjoying it very much.
Love the zany production Andy.
It is entertaining me!
Brilliant beyond belief.
What an epic.
Keep up the good work!
An EPIC video about epic music!
Wow, love this ranking, and the way it's done.
Great work and it was worth every minute.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Epic indeed, fabulous show!
Wow that was truly epic! Congrats to all involved and to you Andy .
High vibration go on
To the sun, oh let my heart dreaming
Past a mortal as me
Where can I be?
Amazing video Andy!! You’re a legend!!!
Thank you 🙌
Epic! Great job, Andy-and all of the participants. It was a journey, an education, a joy.
Still need to listen seriously to Cardiacs, let alone Colosseum, Camel, Van der Graaf Generator, Magma, Hawkwind, Gong, Porcupine Tree, and PFM.
Agreed. Free is great…but prog?
So much music listening to look forward to. Thanks!
Definitely one for the top Andy Edwards youtube videos list. Not quite up to biscuits but we can feel the love behind this. Well done everybody.
Our pleasure!
No no no Andy do not break through the wall and venture into the world beyound for there be demons and dragons and beasties beyond your wildest imagining. @AndyEdwardsDrummer
Know all of them, saw a few of them and have albums by many of them but have too many fabulous memories connected to at least half of them to have put them in any order. Awesome video, thanks Andy
Nice video, already into many of these bands with vinyl on the shelf. Almost all of my top 20 prog bands are here. Not surprised at a few missing.
Anekdoten, Discipline, Spock's Beard, Marillion, Starcastle, IQ, Unitopia also reside on the shelf in one form or another.
Thanks for reminding me of Camel and Magma.
Nice work Andy and all you Patreons...obvs a labour of love. An epic video for an epic genre. Prog isn't my main thing but I dabble and my no.1 would also be Yes. Nice to see Hawkwind in there, wasn't sure they'd qualify as they were so diverse but Pete's summation of their proggier moments was bang on and you can't argue with Mellotron on Hall of the Mountain Grill! Adding Free was presumably a wind-up? It Bites should have got their place. I'd have put Rush much higher, ditto Focus but hey thats just me... anyway thanks to all involved.
this video was such a classic. I watched it over 3 days. worth every minute
Bit of a marathon Andy but very enjoyable. ❤
One of the coolest prog-related videos OF ALL TIME. I texted the drummer from my long ago first band the link because I knew he'd dig this, I think he's still watching hours later. Andy: did your computer have a meltdown rendering all of this?
Yes it did. Some of the edits I had to hope would work because my laptop would simply not preview them. It took 5 hours to export and 2 hours to upload. Jon Anderson, Carl Palmer, Steven Wilson and a few other legends were contacted for videos and then when they didn't come through I had to rethink. I'm chuffed I got Colin Edwin, I don't know him but he watches the channel so he did his video in 10 mins from me emailing him. Legend.
AAbsolutely fantastic have a wonderful day Andy ❤😊
Thank you! You too!
Everything Andy said about Phil Collins is spot on. Saw the Trick of the Tail concert in Vancouver in 1976. Still best concert ever.
Simply amazing.
Andy, I was driving on exactly the same road you were on, just the other day....always love that viaduct!
And yes,,, our number 1 beloved PROG. Band izthe ‘inimitable -YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!’
Thanks, Andy. Fun, but I did break it up over 3 days... Epic!
Glad you mentioned VDGG. Funny Story. My first purchase of them was 1970 The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other, just after hearing ELP Pictures at an Exhibition. Curiously , I never thought anything wrong with the record, as the first track began Darkness 11/11 with a repeating noise which I assumed was intentional. After hearing DSOTM and the starting heartbeat at the same repeat rate, I assumed Pink Floyd was copying VDFF using a different noise, and was appalled. IT wasn't until recently, listening to youtube and that song again, that I realized it was the pressing. Its a little late to get a replacement.
Great video. I saw John Hiseman do.a.drum.clinic in mid 80s. Fantastic
Great video Andy!! Very well produced - and a lot of fun! Do you have the actual list of the 30 bands in order somewhere on the page? I watched this video over a couple days, so I may have missed a couple things, but I was surprised that I didn’t see (unless I missed them) King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Spock Beard, Nektar, Marillion, Fish, Dream Theater, The Flower Kings, Renaissance, and Transatlantic. Of course, I know that the list were personal preferences from your Patreon fans, and there would be 100 reasons and 100 other bands that could be added… I was just surprised that a few of them weren’t mentioned. But all in all - it was a fabulous video and I’d love to see the list.
Thanks for all your hard work and for educating me on a couple bands I’m not familiar with. I guess I better check out the Cardiacs!!
Randy from Clearwater, FL
King Crimson and Jethro Tull are both on there, at number 2 and number 5 respectively. I agree with you that Nektar and Renaissance would be great choices for inclusion on the list. I haven't listened to any of the other bands that you mention (though I've heard of them of course), so maybe they would be too.
It really was a "bloody epic"! Yet we ended with the joy of Jon Anderson. And there was even a happy ending: "Some of you might have passed away." Hahahaha! Thanks, Andy!
Epic (and rather wonderful) video!
(But am I the only one shocked by how low Rush are in the rankings? Is it because the cognoscenti don’t consider them “true prog”?)
Keep up the excellent work…
Epic, yet amusing!
Yes indeed. I like your perceptive comments about Hackett in Genesis. This is how I summarise the classic line up - Gabriel told a story, Banks added the melody, Rutherford underpinned it, Collins drove it forward; and Hackett lit the flame that turned it into gold. You read it here first, offered freely to prog lovers everywhere
Hackett was clearly the quality control guy on whether something was "cool" or not
Absolute epic! This, prog moustaches and the one about the biscuits exist in a world of their own.
When I see the words "prog" and "ranked" in a video, the hand moves faster than the brain and instinctively clicks on that thumbnail. I'll bet I'm not alone with that response. This is a good one.
My little contribution to this treasure trove of Prog Knowledge is this: Kansas' album Masque rarely gets mentioned, but it is my favorite one.
Epic indeed !! 🙌🙌👍😂
Epic! 👏👏👏👏
Thanks for you brilliantly funny input....unless you meant it???
Lol I'm thrilled for that to be included I never expected it to leave WA or I would have sought good lighting and done a better job 😁
There was a whole bunch more people who wished they could have voted but missed it
...and sincerely there was a bunch of us WAs waiting to see if you were coming to tell us you had some left for us to do. They were gagging to have to do it
Well i think it added great comic value to see you have to guiltily come back on camera and struggle through those ones.
But no, it occurred to me to be a hilarious thing to say because the opposite was so obviously true. Wouldn't have been funny at all otherwise... if at all 😂
Let's do it again but with feeling.
30 is exactly that slightly more than 10 that appeals to me. Cool!
Ahoy mate! Caught one of your older vids where you lament not being on Rick Beato's channel for a visit so I sent him this message. Hope you don't mind! "Rick, you simply MUST have Andy Edwards, that British music afficianado on your show. The views would be tremendous! Plus the two of you together would be highly enlightening as well as entertaining. Please consider this. Thanks!" Best of luck and continued success from an American fan!
I haven't started this, but I think Andy has gone super saiyan
I have a feeling that a few of my favourite prog bands won't make the list, so I'll give them a preemptive shout-out now, before the video drops. If any of them are mentioned, I apologize in advance. Those bands are:
- Strawbs
- The Moody Blues
- ELO
Cheers!
Moody blues are so good, especially days of future passed.
“Toto (not on the list) we’re not in Kansas (#30) anymore” !!! Epic opening!!!
As someone whole likes Van Der Graaf Generator I thought you gave a very fair assesment of them considering you arent really a fan. Great video overall too.
Your reaction to Moon Safari brought me here!
YES.......best band, ever. Period.
well said about Jon Amderson.
Wot a lineup! Anyway I think Henry Cow are great especially with Dagmar.
Thanks to this vid I'm sitting here listening to The Mahavishnu Orchestra's Inner Mounting Flame...and I get it! Only 53 years late to the party.
Loved it. I was like a Monty Python movie. Had to have dinner break and several bathroom breaks, pausing to flick through my albums. And ending with Andy doing an acoustic version of ELP "Show me the way to go home". 😂
I love Prog rock.
Any intelligent person with taste do!
@@ulfingvar1 thank you but you know there are exceptions to every rule and I’m the exception to that one.
Fun fact Premiata Forneria Marconi translates as "The award winning Marconi Bakery".
Bang on, From a shop window near where they lived and signed to ELP's Manticore label by Keith Emerson . Got the ''Cook'' live album in 1975 when I was at school, saw them at Sheffield City Hall 1976 they were amazing.
So when Bruford left Yes for King Crimson - did he not only „cross the Berlin Wall to East Germany“ but also grade down from #1 to#2?
You were in fine form on this one, Andy. Does anyone (other than you, I assume) know which prog band covered "Show Me the Way to Go Home"?
Don't cheat! th-cam.com/video/faxQuaClWGI/w-d-xo.html
What an achievement!!!!!
Before watching this rather bonkers epic I waded thru' a Rolling Stone top 500 albums vid. The list, apart from Floyd & Tull was almost entirely devoid of what we Know as prog acts, confirming the feeling that critics still have a rather sniffy attitude to the genre. Coupled with the fact that many of the fans seems to be getting on a bit ( I'm 70) it does make me wonder for the future appreciation of acts that can be loosely assembled under the progressive banner? Whilst I enjoyed this presentation a lot Andy, I do wonder if there are younger people who enjoy the music or whether is become a bit of a a musical cul de sac for the over 50's
dude, do you know how bifurcated the "prog" subgenres are? It's silly. Everything and nothing is prog if the intended audience likes weed.
You may have already noticed that I'm watching this video in stages. And so you don't think I only say bad things (even jokingly), here's a good one: I loved the way you talked about Jethro Tull. Bravo!
On the other hand, regarding the Van Der Graaf Generator, you said that there are no virtuosos. I understand what you mean, but I believe that one should not disregard Peter Hammill's lyrics. He doesn't just write lyrics for songs. He's a true poet! One of the very few in 20th century music. Can a person be a virtuoso with words?
I agree. Hammill is a virtuoso singer...yes. I should have said this.
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer Just finished. Your song has everything to be a massive hit! 🎸
Congrats on this superb video!! Greetings from Lisbon.
Where the hell is Frost* ??? Did I doze off and miss it ?
🏆
All the best fro A Brummie in Bahrain
Soft machine 12. Good. High point imo soft machine 4
I used to think Ian Anderson only had one leg. Deep down I still do.
He only has one at a time.
There's a rumour he has three!
@@lemming9984 You are thinking of Rolf Harris
@@steveunderwood3683 ....or Andrew Lloyd Webber?
@@lemming9984 I was thinking th-cam.com/video/imRaRW4ltOs/w-d-xo.html . Maybe I should have pointed that out for a younger audience.
Progressive Rock is the most important category in the history of music, it broke all the barriers in music, the introduction of classical music blended with rock is unbeatable, this style of music was founded in the UK and probably came out of the Independent school's system, so who started it, Genesis must be mentioned for opening the door, also bands like Jethro Tull added Folk to the genre
Did America make prog? well not really, although it was different, but Europe certainly came on board
Achilles and Ten Years Gone were alsways definitely prog for me, so is in some way All my Love. I also would place Battle of Evermore and Stairway into the prog shelf. But I think Zep were especially prog by fusioning different styles into their blues roots.
PFM should be higher than 29. And there are at least 6-8 Italian prog bands, including the others he mentioned, that should be top 30. (Good to see Henry Cow on the list, definitely one of the best.)
Hey Andy, you big old child of wisdom, stupidity and heart. Just after watching this show of yours, I'm sitting here (in Norway) listening to Bill Bruford's "One of a kind" at a pretty high level on my headphones with the second beer in hand, and I think to myself: "Why did I put this on the turntable?" The answer came at once: "Inspiration". 'Creativity at its fullest'? Why not? The music in my ears seem to suggest it, so...
Angel=POMP=Masters!
I'm not gonna lie, i was feeling a little disappointed at rhe favt that Andy didn't really shared his opinion on all the artists, but then u saw Kavus and Matt Stevens and i thought to myself; wait a minute i actually really like those chaps.
Remember...not my list. This was voted for by my Patrons
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer i know i know.......also Matt Stevens Is under rated. Lucid Is a very good album
You know I am in a band with Matt?
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer yes, but i was just sayin'.
I actually found Out about your channel because of that Time you guys talked about The crimson albums on the TFATD podcast
The Sandinista of Prog Commentry.
Much much better than Sandinista!
@@richfrank8540 I don’t know. It now gets a lot of criticism for being “indulgent”, but I quite adored it when it came out.
There's a lot of things that go into a great Progressive band, but it's the songs that make the difference, and 70's Yes songs are the greatest.............................
I appreciate the effort you put in this I know it was an easy appreciate all the guests that the time to give their opinions once again you show me some bands that I didn't know handsome bands I could have probably lived without hearing handsome bands that I always love to hear I think you're still snubbing American Prog but thank you for at least grudgingly put in Kansas add number 30 you still missing the boat though with no mention of utopia or Todd Rundgren Steely Dan and who I think is a great Outsider and underappreciated master unexpected Direction the great Edgar Winter but as always you make education entertaining make education entertaining thank you so very much
Edgar Broughton > Edgar Winter
@@jdmresearch Edgar Broughton Band was/is great (and pretty proggy at times)!
Eva is brilliant
A prog princess...we need a bit of glamour here. and an amazing singer and songwriter. Eva the Diva!
Wasn't expecting Cherdleys/Oliver Tree on this channel :)
I felt there was a relationship in the way Rush fans think their fandom represents themselves is similar to Cherdleys, Oliver Tree, & Blake Webber's attempts to impress girls...it is possible that only I understand this however
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer I'm impressed by how deeply you're thinking about Cherdley's videos :)
I'm glad
East of Eden and Gryphon in a certain phase were interesting additions to progressive development. Quite a few interesting bands didn't last more than a couple of albums , which is really sad.
Not bad, only three real eyebrow-raisers on the list: Free, Cardiacs (only because I've never heard of them), and Led Zepplin. Honestly, Led Zepplin is more eyebrow-raising to me than Free; their inclusion seems more easily explained as an effort to let prog rock leech off some of Led Zepplin's (IMO undeserved) prestige than by the notion that anyone could think of them as even borderline prog.
In place of the eyebrow-raisers and one or two others, I would put:
Curved Air - Nobody created moodier blends of classical and rock than them.
Greenslade - Nobody created more romping, fun progressive rock or exploited the multi-keyboardist format better than them.
Renaissance - Nobody more convincingly delivered the grandiosity of progressive rock: classical piano, orchestration, unabashedly literary lyrics, and of course, plenty of epics.
Ambrosia - Nobody better merged the genres of progressive rock and pop than they did on their self-titled debut.
Lots of great commentary and surprise guests in this video, though I honestly would have made it much more concise. It could have been edited down to an even two hours without losing anything meaningful. It was worth the time expenditure; it's just that the time expenditure didn't need to be so huge.
31. Vangelis - the man was a genius.
I want your opinion about ELOY some time.Greetings from Greece
This is a real tasty biscuit.
Good stuff... will come back later for the #1 prog band: Pink Floyd 😅
Rush #26???
This list has already been discredited
Uptown prog ranking
"Free" works on nearly every list, whether it's a Rock - or a Blues - list, or a funky kinda Blues - Rock - list
Or even a Best Marketing Gimmicks list.
Great video mate, 👍👍, but Where’s the AMAZING JAPANESE prog rock bands ?????? There’s incredible talent over there. 👉 everyone do yourselves a favour take a musical journey of discovery,
(Feel free to ask)
The Flowers King deserved to be there
The Mutiny bit was hilarious…he’s already got our fiver and then he wants us to do his videos…😂
paul Kenyon! Comedy genius
I realize this is all quite subjective, but I have definite reservations about categorizing the music of some of these bands as "progressive rock". As I mentioned earlier, Free is definitely NOT a prog rock band. If Free is prog rock, then Bad Company is prog rock. I rest my case.
Here are some other bands I'm not totally comfortable putting on the list:
1. Led Zeppelin. If Led Zeppelin plays progressive rock, then so do Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep. They all have some fleeting prog rock elements scattered in their music, but that's as far as it goes, I think.
2. Tangerine Dream. As much as I love them, they're essentially "electronica", and not really prog rock. Even calling their music "rock" is stretching reality a little bit.
3. Hawkwind. Another band I love, but mainly because I listened to them whilst doing acid in the late 70s. Spacy, swirling and far out ... but prog? Don't know about that.
4. Mahavishnu Orchestra. Incredible music to be sure, but I see them more as jazz fusion than prog rock. I suppose jazz fusion is a "type" of progressive rock, so in that sense I guess I buy it. But when I hear them, I don't think "prog rock". I think jazz first and rock second. But I admit the distinction is subtle and somewhat vague.
5. Frank Zappa. To me Zappa transcends all categories. His music encompasses prog rock, pure jazz, jazz fusion, classical, blues, doo-wop, rockabilly, marching band, etc, etc, etc. It's too BIG to be limited by the "progressive rock" category and label.
That's about it, I guess. I'm fine with the rest of those bands being on the list, even though I'm not familiar with a couple of them. By the way, I'm not a big fan of Marillion, but I am surprised they weren't included.
The patrons voted for these bands. I dealt with this I hope with the Free section here. The problems of categorisation.
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer Yes, I understand that, Andy. I was really speaking to your patrons here ... not actually a reflection on you. And you did make that categorization issue clear in the video.
Free is really the only somewhat egregious selection on the list anyway. The others I mentioned are largely open to interpretation ... as I said, it's mostly a subjective thing, and just my opinion.
But a fun moment in the video
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer Indeed.
you could allways rate the derek and clive albums
Darn, if only Genesis hadn't got so popular in the 80's
Is there a difference between corporate rock and Prog?
I think there is.
Off topic: is Decemberists prog?
Yes
grating band- some people think that's the prerequisite for all Prog
Only The Island
THE MARS VOLTA
This is Andy's "Gone with the Wind"-2 hours and 43 minutes! Or is it "Barry Lyndon"?
I was going for Carry on Camping
I had to look up that reference. Should I watch it?

I want to understand! Damn it!
I've always seen British Culture the eyes of "Love Actually....Or "The Trip"..."Lolita"...Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"..."What's new Pussycat"...and of course "It's the Benny Hill Show: !!! Ha! Ha!
Kansas still hard done by to this day.
Very well presented Andy a lot of hard work and effort. Love Genesis when i was young, must admit a lot of bands i had to listen to as never heard of. A modern Prog/rock metal band i love is Ayreon probably not well known in UK th-cam.com/video/HAJ0zTMLClQ/w-d-xo.html
