Early 1960's TV Portrays Ham Radio

- Contributed by Steffen Demos (KA2KNX). I am a Twilight Zone fan and caught a mention of ham radio in the episode "The Black Leather Jackets" that aired in 1964. I don't think this generalization exists anymore - at least I hope not.

😂 priceless. Those bad boys in leather jackets didn't have hogs, they were riding custom Champion and Lightning Bug keys. That scene reminded me of Marlon Brando in The Wild One. Then I remembered, Marlon Brando was a radio ham.
That reminds me.....I need to get my leather jacket from the cleaners before the next ham radio club meeting! This month we're initiating new members. Time to polish up the whip antennas!! LMAO 73 de W1NLJ
They still seem friendlier than some of the hams I have encountered during Field Day and some hamfests!

I just got licensed a little before then (62). Did my part on 6M AM with the neighbor's TV's trying to watch channel 2 or 3. Didn't have a leather jacket though. One of them was my Elmer a quarter mile away. Settled on scheduled operating times later in the evenings to keep peace with most everyone. WB2CYJ

Big Daddy doesn't understand how lucky he is that we don't have a 160 meter rhombic instead. There are only about three episodes that I've never seen and they were from the last season. The storylines got weaker

I remember that. M dad was one of those guys. FORGET TV, when he was on the blower. The RF it put out was strong enough to light the candle lamps in the living room chandelier. 'Always reminded me of Robby the Robot.

actually....( and I have been a ham for over 45 years) those guys......compared to
some that I have meet at HamFest and club meetings....are quite impressive
young men.
and before any of our fraternity gets their panties in a wad over that statement.....
Sometimes when you come home after a club meeting or hamfest...

To this day nobody is for certain what HAM stands for.
It the first letter of the name of each of the persons who started hamradio, they were 3 students, 2 guys & 1 gal. H., A. and M, their radiostations call became then HAM.
