Worked in St. Lawrence's hospital in the 80s, before that in the 70s I was stationed twice at the barracks next door with the Welsh Guards, your video brings back lots of good memories of Caterham.

I remember going to the barracks in 1974 as a 'new' 16 year old apprentice for PO Telecommunications. We were investigating a phone fault in the Sergeant's office. Felt very out place with long hair & flared jeans. 😁

#1 comment I first visited St Lawrence's and St Mary's churches in the mid 1960s on a school trip. The organist of Mary's told us that their organ was the finest in Surrey. Maternal great aunts & uncles lived in Caterham on the Hill and my mat. Great Grand parents died there. Caterham began as a hill fort or Cader Ham which corrupted into Catterham and finally as we know it. Lovely vid. Thanks, Phil

What a fascinating walk around my childhood stamping ground. Very interesting Phil - am sharing with contemporaries - we all went to Caterham Hill Primary school in the 60s and 70s!

My friends mother was a social worker in the mid 1970's and used to take us to the mental hospital. So many memories from your walk. We used to play in Queens park. If i'm not wrong there used also be a toy shop on the high street called Mayes Toys Shop.

Hi, I always like to read about people’s memories, it’s something that spurs me on to make more films like this. I will make some enquiries about the toy shop, it’s not something I recall personally but I know some people that may have some information 😊

@@philswallow Yes you certainly done a good job! Re the toy shop I think it was along side the Dental surgery at what now seems to be a business called " Walk In Architecture" no. 83 the high street. I also think the dental surgery used to be a doctors surgery before.

You missed Caterham Rifle club, behind the Dene. Been there since 1907.
Great video, I like how the Bourne Society have put plaques up.

It wasn’t on the trail! 😉 - I think I remember going there when I was in the Scouts, mid-1970s. I’ll need to one in the valley at some point

The original old Fire Engine House was knocked down by the developer who didn't have permission. The developer was forced to rebuild it as close to the original as possible.

Great video, 84 High Street actually dates back to 1465 so 15th century, you can tell by the exposed wattle and daub walls. Happy to give a tour.

That was great. When I was at uni between 1987/ 91, I worked at Lloyds Bank, now Baileys, opposite the Blacksmiths for a few summers. Prior to going to Leeds for a post grad degree, I worked at Express Dairies in Kenley for one summer and delivered milk to the Barracks. Scary stuff each morning at about 6.30, getting the once over at the Guard House, all manner of fmdetectors and mirrors under the milk float. Happy days, as were Sundays playing for Cateham Cricket Club, based at Queens Park.
Thanks Phil, brought a smile on an otherwise miserable Sunday. 👍🏻

@@philswallow Interestingly I have parts of a Hurricane that crashed into happy valley, Old Coulsdon, near my old school, he parachuted into the guard's barracks and they took some persuading he was an RAF fighter pilot.
