Ludwig is using rebranded Remo heads. The Ludwig Weathermaster heads have a crimped collar and a different coating on the batter heads. To the best of my knowledge, they are still available for order but are not original equipment on Ludwig drums.

Great to know - appreciate this info!

The sustain was a little different at lower tunings, but tone wise, so similar! I prefered the Copper overall, which surprised me! I don't know why its not a very popular option.
Great...... ANOTHER snare for my wish list!!!
I really love the tube lugs too. Just the looks. I know the Imperial lugs just acream "I'm a Ludwig" but I don't care about that. Maybe if every snare in my collection had them. I dunno. 🥁🥁🥁

They do make the copperphonic with tube lugs at the time of writing this comment - both polished and raw shells, too!

Slept in this morning. My first snare was a used Standard Aluminum 5x14. Second was a Vistalite in 5x14. The next one jumped to a 6.5 classic series followed by a 6.5 hammered bronze and I went on to only play 6.5 snares. Lately I’ve been into that 5x14 size again. The last 5 drums have been 5 inch drums with one 4x14 Legacy Mahogany snare which I love.

Do you still have the standard aluminum and vistalite - both are great drums!
I'm just like you - always preferred a 7X14, but now I see why people love the 5X14 size. Gives the characteristics of the drum but a direct sound

@ I don’t not have the standard long gone. I do have the vistalite and always will.

They are both great, but I love the Copperphonic! 🥁 Thx for sharing Nick! 👏

Of course, thank you for the continued support! What made the copperphonic stand out to you?

@ It’s the slightly “drier” sound for me I think. A smidge less ring. 🥁

The copper opened up a bit at the higher tunings. That medium-low tuning brought out a lot of overtones from the bronze. Like 'em both, though!

Totally! Both amazing drums for different reasons

Not to be a nerd, but copper is not an alloy. Copper is a pure metal. Alloys are blends. Love your vids Nick!! 🥁❤️🥁

How about that - I had no idea! I thought all metals were alloy's. Appreciate that info, now I know!

I didn’t love either drum in the lower tunings. The copper just seemed to disappear in the mix. For me it seemed to have almost no attack until you got to medium tuning. Idk, maybe I’m just cranky today, but I would pass on both of these compared to almost any other Ludwig snare I’ve heard. It’s a shame because I thought I was going to love the Copperphonic. Maybe they need coated Diplomats? Great video as always!

It could be because of the shell depth, also Nick usually tunes them very very low almost out of usable range (which I love) 😅 Also he tunes the head evenly (as far as I know). I find that in the low tunings raising 2 lugs to a higher tension gives the drum a higher volume and attack while remaining in the same tuning range.

@ agreed. Although I do usually like the way Nick tunes in the lower ranges. The good news is that I don’t need to buy either of these drums! :)

That's a totally valid opinion. Regarding diplomat heads, are you someone who prefers a more open sounding snare?
In the older snare Saturday vid where I showcase just the copperphonic, I play it through a few more tunings. Check that out - maybe it sounds better to your ear in another tuning th-cam.com/video/PujoV01yUwU/w-d-xo.html

@@NickCostaMusic I’ll go check out that older video. Normally I don’t use a really open drum sound much these days. I just wasn’t feeling the Ambassador on either of these drums this time. Just seemed muddy. Coated Ambassador or G1 is my go to snare head, but sometimes I use a G12, G2 or Emperor. I usually don’t have any problem getting enough brightness or ring even at lower tunings. It’s ok though, I don’t need to love every drum on the planet. Lord knows I can’t afford to own them all. Lol.

if anyone wants to buy a 72 5x14 supraphonic that was used on some big albums let me know! Looking to sell, or trade!
