- Tarkov Arena has just released and despite all the hype, the reality is that the game everyone wanted is nowhere to be found. From horrible kit balance and progression to matchmaking and server issues, the overall design decisions and end-product makes Tarkov Arena a miserable game to sink your time into for both casual and competitive players. In this video, I break down why Arena is doomed to fail unless they take some valuable lessons learned from other games.

I think Tarkov Arena has alot of promise, and probably won't be to where we want it to be until 6-12 months from now.. As a 3+ yr 4000 hr Tarkov player, I want the best for the game and I think this video is TOP TIER for how to make a comprehensive review with actual EXPLANATIONS AND EXAMPLES/IDEAS that could work better. So I REALLLY hope BSG sees this video because with some tweaks and changes to the systems (ranked vs unranked) etc this could be a great game. Thank you for putting together a top tier video with detail and actual feedback!

Side note: (For whatever reason, the ETS did ZERO testing on Arena over the last few months like had been previously told to us.. Would've been nice to mention these GLARING mistakes in testing months ago to prevent a rollout like this).
along with that i think the new wipe will bring alot of weapon balance with the recoil and armour changes, Yes each ammo of preset will still mattter, But lower pen ammo will be effective if they hit in unarmoured spots espically if were talking high damage rounds.

@@austinboston5643 i confirm as a 4k+ hour player. even if it's a different team working on this. they couldn't even fix the main game after 5 years. after 5 years i did not feel it got better. it even got a lot worse. some examples : inertia, found in raid status to sell on the flea, remove good items from the flea. push me to do the same shitty quests every wipe again and now even force me to do them because everything is locked behind traders and quest. Fuck Tarkov. They should sell their game already and let someone finish what they can't.

Honestly the biggest dissapointment for me is the fact that they stuck to a preset system. One of the most important parts of Tarkov is the customization, all the attachments, ammo, armor combinations etc and they limit you to presets ? There is so much potential for a round by round economy system like cs. Imagine making loadout, ammo, gun presets and picking between them based on the price like cs. Instead of using one of the biggest strengths of tarkov, they gave us this messy unbalanced boring system.

@@8.5mmBuckshot Well if its competetive esports they want its guaranteed to have meta builds in it, but in that case there is still room for a lot of experimentation and different builds depending on price. And if one build is way too above the pack, bsg gets to change prices individually. I also believe that if they actually want esports they dont need to fully stick to tarkov mechanics and stats.
Rod does deserve early access it was the whole selling point at the launch of the game early access to dlc etc

the devs for tarkov have always seen themselves as super intelligent or sophisticated, when in reality they just struck gold with tarkov years back, the base game along with this new release struggles with balance and they really dont seem to know what their doing with it all

Fully delivered?? On whose caterogy? The game hasnt even fully released yet and your talking about they never deliverd thats absurd. They had a game in mind 10 years ago and they set out making, it suddenly got pupluar midway through developlment and it has caused people to form their own opiooin of what the game was supposed to be, go watch the old devblogs and Its the exact stuff they planned of doing now.

I honestly thought Arena would be something different. Weapon and armor customization based on points like in Insurgency:Sandstorm, competitive gamemode which would have predefined balanced presets that everyone have so you use your skill and fight for rank. Also size of maps/combat is extreamely small I thought It would be like 33-50% of Tarkov maps but now its like 10% size.

Areana was never supposed to be be 33-50 percent thats ridouolous its not trying to be a battlefield, Its like contract wars and some of the maps are exactly the same size as that previous game.
Esports ready im fairly certain comes from the running joke of war thunder saying for YEARS it was "Esports ready" and have made it a meme themselves at this point

Can you imagine playing a game of halo or cod and firing a whole 30 round magazine in a guy and doing *zero* damage because you were shooting someone with the incorrect bullet attachment? BSG had no idea what they were doing lmao
bullet attachments? uhhhh i guess it is a thing in COD, but not so much Arena. Damage is based off they type of round, some ammos have almost no pen for example US where others such as PBP have a high pen. It's a game of some adaptation if you can't pen armor shoot for unprotected spots, the legs, arms, stomach, head. not penetrating armor does in fact cause damage, its blunt damage which is a small % of the bullets full damage value.

I play Tarkov you two, I'm saying how dumb and out of place the ammo and armor system is in a regular shooter environment. Just because it "works" in regular eft doesn't mean it needed to be in an entirely different game mode.

I'm having to run the vityaz class right now. Went up against one of the classes with tier 5 armor and helmet with a faceshield, shot him 11 timed for 430 damage and he turned and 2 tapped me. Love it.

I had a guy on our team yesterday that would immediately try to kill everyone on our team the second we spawned, our team had to continually teamkill him, to even be able to play the game. after the round was over i 'd lost over 500k roubles and am now broke and unable to play the game.
If this happens to you. let the guy kill your team as fucked as it sounds. After 5 TK's you get banned, which is almost what happened to me as i had 4 that game.
Quick tip, teams start leaving match when they losing, one of the team leave and others can leave without losing money and oponents MUST leave or you gonna get 0XP even if you win. And there is more what you can do, for example you can leave duo mode when you win only 2 rounds, you get some money but oponents must leave with 0XP and 0 money, realy pro gamers eSport game, and we don´t wanna talk about desync..or nades that don´t kill if you die before explosion. Since you can see from two streams it looks like 50% of our shots is not detected or hitboxes are laggy and not present in same time on same place in one server tic....whole Arena is mess that looks like it was made Day Before....
the preset thing wouldn't be a huge deal to me if the progression wasn't so goddamn slow or so punishing when you are outclassed
I think BSG will make adjustments, It's only a week old. The only 2 things I really think need to change is the cost of higher end kits and the matching top tier geared players against bottom tier geared players. Starting with 1.2M roubles and losing 100K with each loss by the 3rd tier kit means if you get randomly stuck with a few bad teams in a row and you will be broke in less than a day.
They've been developing this for how long? It's the lack of forwards thinking that's hurting Arena.. you can't change how these devs think unfortunately if this is where we're at..

The preset system is just plain awful. Part of what makes Tarkov Tarkov is the customization. It would be much more dynamic with something like a point based system or an actual economy like CS.

I love it. Only thing should be changed in terms of mm, everyone should choose loadout before mm to avoid big eq quality differences.
I love this video and how you used examples from MULTIPLE games to accompany your argument. My biggest issue with it is that it shows how ARROGANT BSG is. Both Tarkov and Arena have an extreme amount of features that have already been perfected or done by dozens of games and yet they insist with their half-baked "original" systems and refuse to course correct.
It saddens me because when I bought the game in 2018/19 I thought it was gonna be everything I wished for in the FPS genre. Now I just play it to not feel like a clown for buying EOD, and praying one day BSG learns about humility

because everytime i see the replay feels like its 2 different times. I play on a 1s delay... its insane.
I got Arena early, I wanted Tarkov with less time spent in menus and we kind of got that. I love the gameplay, but the combination of the absolute paltry winnings for actually winning a match, and the high cost of kits even in the lower tiers means players are basically always short on cash i.e. the ability to play the kits they spent all that time grinding for. It's like the devs balanced the game with the idea that everyone would bring in extra money and gear from their main Tarkov games, but then just didn't let us do that to start with. I shouldn't have to play a separate game to make this one function anyhow.
If you feel short on money it’s because you are losing more than you’re winning. It’s a skill issue, not a design issue.

I thought this would be helpful for a warmup mode for new players, but they released it to eod owners only so it will be mostly try hards then die out, I’m not paying 30 for something that should be free

Yeah I’ve lost all hype, owned tarkov since 2017 and still not in , I’m more excited for wipe soon then getting into arena now the balance seems way off and lost all hype
My biggest problem is just the gear imbalance in matches. And not browns able to switch kits mid match.
Not to mention RRLP m4 rounds have a 3% pen chance against a untar vest which is a class 3 armor think about that
Honestly they should’ve similarly followed tarkov with the loadouts. If they would give you a certain amount of money to spend on your loadouts and gear that’s correspondent to your rank I think it’d be more fun, people would be able to use what they want and change it easier if it doesn’t work for them. The gesr diff wouldn’t be as big of an issue either as it’d be on you and not your gear availability. I really like this game and I’ve had fun it just needs some work.
The in game menus show penetration and damage stats now. So that’s a plus.
That experience tree EXP thing is a huge problem, it makes playing anything but your highest unlock completely pointless
all of what you said implies that they gave any thought onto any of the systems they made. It seems like all they did was that they create a slightly different matchmaker, a slightly different netcode (that is still just as bad as EFT). They can't design a coherent game to save their lives

As a russian "one day will be game dev" i would like to make a call. Presets will stay, we love that shit, but ballans is ass (to put it lightle), so it just gona take a lot of time for devs to figer this out. May be custom presets, but that's it

Yeah, I'm grinding in Blackjack now and whenever someone has good armor like Redut and good helmets I just can't do anything, can't kill them in time with leg meta cuz they just turns around and one shots me, and can't penetrate their armor either
this looks like a game put together in no-time.. its not what I expected, apart from the combat and maps.. Oh well, I like to use it to warm up for my tarkov rounds.

the biggest issue for me is the servers, I've constantly been met with "match cancelled due to loading issues" I've tried to load into maybe 10 matches and have only been able to get into and play 2 of them. I've tried verifying game files uninstalled and reinstalled. You would've thought they would've ironed out these issues before releasing the game, but it is BSG we're talking about

I think something somewhat interesting is BSG made an arena shooter before this and Tarkov before they were Battlestate games and it had pretty good systems for healing create a class and so on so them completely abandoning that system and improving on what they have already done decided to try and reinvent the wheel instead. (The game is Hired Ops for anyone wondering)
I hope they take people's feedback and make sweeping changes to the problem areas of the game, even if that means the game goes away for a while and comes back months later.

With the recoil changes, and the upcoming ability to create custom presets using your character from the base game, I think it'll improve a lot
Hopefully, the game is fun until I shoot someone quite literally 18 times and die to a headshot cause my armor can’t pen.
I definitely think it could improve but I don't know if it will "fail". I can only speak for me and my friends who have all enjoyed EFT for 1000-2000 hours but Arena is overall exactly what we wanted it to be, balancing issues aside. The demand was simple, let us shoot people in quick tdm like matches to to take a break from raids and it is fun! Although the balancing can be very frustrating in earlier class tiers and would seem like a simple fix.
The best Tarkov PVP experience was late 2019 early 2020 labs.
I was a mediocre labs player at best but that PVP was amazing 5v5 on labs was a great experience.
The fact that there’s no looting mechanic in a mode to gain team points is a crazy missed opportunity.
Secondly crafting a kit based on a number system for GEAR certain levels allow for class 3 4 or 5 armor. Followed by helmets, rigs and headsets
Then during the match you can kill to upgrade your kit between rounds or LOOT a gun and keep it to the next round (if you don’t die) creating a risk reward for having a kitted weapon.
Tarkov isn’t a balanced game because of the complex med system but the asymmetrical system can be engaging and extremely entertaining - just like the peak labs days.
Not being able to play is unacceptable
The only way of fixing that gear score system I can think of would be a system like Insurgency: Sandstorm. Each weapon part, plate carrier, meds and grenades have a point cost. The player is free to choose whatever they need. Want a super kitted gun with thermals? Sure, but you're stuck with a paca and a cheese medkit now. Want to have an altyn and class 5 armor? Get a stock ak-74 then. Want to have a full inventory of nades and meds? Your gun's ammo is not going to pen through enemy's armor.
You got the armor system wrong. They is still blunt damage.There is also the option to shreed the ammo with high ammo dmg and then fuck them up.
Read it more up .Balistic in tarkov is hard to master. But when you do it,its pretty easy to engange with nearly any ammo

Honestly Arena is what made me convinced BSG has no clue what they're doing anymore. Nikita might have a vision for the games future but he doesn't seem to be sharing it with anyone, maybe because he's scared someone will "steal" it and make a competitor or because he thinks it would be best for players not to know what's next. I don't really care honestly. All I see whenever I look at Tarkov is a game that seems to be floundering in feature creep and seemingly going in circles. Its like they reach their current development goal, look at each and go "Now what?" and just find something to work on, no matter how unconnected it is to the players complaints or desires. Arena looked cool at first but I think it just proves my point. They ran out of things they doing, and decided to throw a new game mode together. Simply because they had no other long or short term goal at the moment.

Regarding the tech tree and kit balance: Unless theres more avenues added to make roubles, at the highest rank, people usually wouldnt play all with top kits available all the time, just because you have to win 2-4 games per loss to actually break even, and those winrates are something you rarely see even on the highest rank. Im playing the AS-VAL kit now for some time, and theres times I just have to switch a tier or two down, otherwise I risk running a free kit and spiralling further into the losing streak, although Im sitting at nearly 60 percent winrate. The balance of the kits is also not an issue, provided the new armor hitbox system works as intended, as the kits are clearly designed around it.
analyzed on spot,exactly my thoughts,had day one access only played on 3d day run into lots high geared dudes for 15 matches that are almost unkillable after that it started to get better due to me having better gear too,balancing is abysmal in this + new players will be shredded even harder than me, then there is this issue im like 80% in the loosing team no matter how well i perform,soon i am forced to play pistol-ling thats gonna be fun lol
Been trying to use the pump action shotgun presets which are terrible. And now I’m almost out of money so my progression is about to get soft locked. So when that happens I guess I’ll just start running free kits and troll the fuck out of people since I won’t be able to progress anymore.
The level 4 scout class im using is a decently built mpx but rounds you have is quakemaker (hollow points) which wouldnt be that bad if you didnt face other teir 4 kits when they have a face shield or level 4 armour your screwed

you should be able to rent kits for 24 hours, ect. like how combat arms used to be. and be able to swap between kits in match after each round.
dude I spent 1 evening playing solo and will not touch Arena for some time now. Ther is an OCEAN on improvements to be made.
Perfect video! Arena in no way an E-sport game. They need to strip it down to balanced loadouts that are all equally capable of taking out an opponent only limited or having a disadvantage based on the type of weapon ie shotgun vs sniper rifle.
They really have to have a kit builder with different guns, ammo, attachments, etc being various amounts of points.

Yeah exactly, I wanted to keep it very simple. Tarkov has an incredible ballistics system and the way bullet pen works with armor plus player health, broken bones, bleeds etc is awesome but you can really get into the weeds trying to explain it in one go. I felt as if focusing on one specific example like pen values vs armor would be a bit easier to understand and help show the balance issues.

Damn, I was a little bummed out i couldn't play arena. I'm not as excited now, just waiting for the overrun mode to release tbh.
A cs buy system would absolutely make a 10-15 min match 30 minutes. It just wouldn't work. Unlocking items somewhat like call of duty and customizing a kit based on ranking and so on would absolutely be a blast.
the current tarkov wipe is only like my 3rd wipe. my first one i hit level 16 with a few friends, the next ones ive been solo. hit like level 7 last wipe and am level 2 rn this wipe. was looking forward to arena to learn the gunplay and have some skill transfer over to tarkov. i play more arena than EFT... BUT arena's progression is unbearable like 100h to get top tier kit in once specialization is a bit crazy. was hoping to have some unlockable customization to my kits not just some poorly crafted premade kits. i enjoy playing nonetheless but could be done SO SO much better
You know, at first i did not like the title of the video, and thought i was going to disagree with you on at least some things, but the more you went on, the more i realized you are completely right on what you say. I think that what i resonated the most on was on the presets topic. I think that the rest could, at least, eventually get fixed """"easily"""", however, fixing the presets would be... horrible. And i come from War Thunder, i really do not want to deal with that kind of progression system. I'd rather be unlocking small things like different guns, or better attachments, not a full kit that you cannot even change the scope on.

I have not had the same troubles you have, I got it the day that it went live for. May have since fixed pretty much all of the gripes that you have had with it.
I was all set with Arena and over it after 2 matches. I only play it because my friends have been on that instead of the main game as of late. It definitely needs some major work.

While I will say that there are more issues than I expected, I’m not too concerned about the state of Arena. It’s very fixable.

Its weird not a single match i have won with cqb blackjack i even had a game with 11 kills and still didnt make enough to pay for the kit itself i still lost money like wtf

game modes, you get X amount for loadouts, higher rank you can get into macthes with higher X amount for loadouts,

I think that arena has too much potential but that preset thing just make the game a race to a LONG grinding to have the meta presets to play with peapole with lower presets and letting them no choice to win and that just make the game frustrating and when you lose the game it just don't recompense your perfomance or kills it just reward you if you win or lose mostly.
I hope they do those changes and listen to comunity because arena has really solid maps and gameplay and it's pretty fun to play if there weren't unbalanced presets.
My problem as a SOLO is I get matched with bots for team mates while I go against Twitch streams kd is positive but I lost 10 games ina row because opposing teams have way better kits then us

you nailed every issue ive had with arena since starting it. the kits make the game absolutely unfun and removes any skill required. its incredibly frustrating that everything from the start is ammo/armor diff.

Bro I swear I do not understand the recoil in tarkov. I’m still new to the game in general but I swear I cannot hit anyone, even point blank. Also that “Accept” button at the beginning of each match is absurd
New tarkov wipe is good and everyone has completely forgotten about Arena and I dont see how it can ever survive that instant irrelevance

I was willing to get back into Tarkov with the release of Arena. Unfortunately, they opted to go the grindy route, and I am just tired of all these gaming asking for so much of your time while not even providing the gameplay to even make that experience at least enjoyable. On top of the base game being grindy within itself. Like 2023 we have had so many great games come out, and these devs (not just BSG) expect us to play just their game.

I laughed when nikita talked about Esports. Every design choice they made for the game is anything but competitive, I mean litteraly. Ranking up system, map choice system which ties in with class selection, not having a stable objective game mode. Basicly tdm with a twist which is fun but not competitive at all, map design is questionable. Its a horrible design choice and I'm actually baffled by it. There are loads of competitive games out there, how can they have missed that mark?
A game by definition is deemed competitive when the playing field is even. All they need to do is have a credit system or just have the same default classes everyone in the match can acces. At least add something like dominiation and if they really want to join Esports search & destroy. Big part solved, mapd esign is not that big of a factor if other elements are in eqilibrium.
Just shows they have zero clue about what they are doing and this is not something you fix in just a beta unless you planning a long ass beta. Such a schame as its still Tarkov which has great mechanics and combat.

Half the loadouts have scopes and mid range weapons yet most of the maps are filled with extreme clutter and corners every few feet, forcing extreme shot range combat, camping corners and slivers of sight lines, and creeping around maps slowly to avoid making noise. These maps do not match the weapons or mechanics of this game. It doesn't make any fucking sense.
Makes you wonder if they even playtested for balance. Like - how did anyone who has played tarkov for any length of time thought this balance state was 'good'?
It is very odd that they stuck with presets when the game isn’t very balanced anyways. I personally like the presets though because it almost eliminates any one of the 4 or 5 people in my group taking FOREVER to be ready.

I did the math itll take over 1.5 to 2 hours depending on w/l to go from 3 to 4 level kit then over 3 hours with straight wins to go from 4 to 5 its insane then add the god awful matchmaking to it.... still having fun but DAMN
It's fun with a 5 premade to fuck around in, soloqueue is dreadful. Sets are unbalanced but once we get casual queue with our own sets it could be a decent warmup mode. Also matchmaking could easily be fixed by matching with arp+gearscore instead of just arp. The recoil and armor rework will also make all of the pen values matter a lot less with flesh damage ammo being very viable for killing anything that's not rocking a full heavy armor set which aren't all that common in the presets below like tier 8.

It was a sub division of BSG who made the game : believe it or not they don't know what it is under the hood, i mean the internal mechanics of the game and we can observe it : loadouts are non sense like you said ...
Why not take eft progression and instead of going into a raid you go into the arena with your loadout. No ingame system for bying but level based or trader level based matchmaking.
Look up Survarium, see how they managed to keep customization working. Every gear had thier tier, you could customize your loadout however you liked, but had to keep it in tier 1 gear if you wanted to play against tier 1 players, if you were to use tier 1 armor and tier 2 weapon you would be fighting against tier 2 players etc. I'm not talking about other aspects of survarium because it was flawed, but how they made gearing up is really what Arena should do
You summed it up prefectly. I made the mistake of switching my tree and I basically got shit on for the last 100 games. Not even kidding. It made me drop my kd from 1.8 to 1.2 , it made the game way more grindy and worst of all I don't enjoy it anymore. I don't even have a chance because I'm playing against Ryz-T's with a g36 and the shitty 456 ammo not even the 56A1. And that's a bummer because for the first 2 or 3 days I really enjoyed it. I'd like to play more classic Tarkov but I dont have the time nor the machine for it. Streets runs with 20-30 fps on all low except texture high on Ryzen 7 3700x RTX 3070 and 32 gb DDR4 3200 mhz memory. And if I look up my specs ingame it says my gpu is at like 40 % load my cpu as well and ram is like 30 gb used. Wtf... . Sorry for the rant had to get it out of my system...
Im leveling from left top to right bottom, that way i unlock all the same tiers at the same time. and when my weapon/armor sucks i pick one off a body if i get the chance:D
but people forget that it is in close beta, of course it is not ready and ballanced
BSG really needs a competitor. I love Tarkov and what they've created and I'm so grateful for such a unique game, but we need someone to make something just as appealing to wake BSG up and give us some options.
