The classic OS engine of the 90ies. The "FX" mounting pattern seems to become a standard.
I never experienced the peeling problem with my engines but repaired numerous used OS ABN engines with 9 out of 10 had at least minor peeling on the sleeve. My assumption is that the peeling is caused by extremely rich running attempting to do the classic running in procedure. ABN/ABC engines do need a different running in procedure but the "experienced" people on the field often dominate the way engines are used or ran in. The FX engines can be flown out of the box anyway.

I for one can testify for its power since I have the mark of the aftermath on my leg. 14 stitches to be exact. One can never be too careful!

I think when you start taking the head screws off, one will hear the first or second screw "snap" off after which the head will slightly loosen up and the Aluminum will relax so little that the rest of the screws will not make the same sound.
I have seen the same "droplets" when I added some 20% WD40 and 80% fuel and ran the engine. The WD40 cleans the engine so well but causes droplets like your engine. I don't know for sure if that is what you had though. Certainly looks like a low time motor. Good 46 Engines, I have a few of them.

Nice job D! Hey David, you said that you liked these back in the days of flying, but you had other engines that were your favorite.Which engines did you like using the most?

I preferred the Tower Pro 46

This is a low run time engine, that lubricant used has a strange way to form watterlike droplets, i saw that only in mineral based oil and glycerine mixtures.

My feelings on this engine are as follows: It was run inverted hence the reason why the right side of the head fin was polished to get it looking clean. The engine has been extensively cleaned, not as good as I do, but good enough to hide actual run time and carbon evidence. I have no idea what the liquid inside it was, perhaps as you say mineral oil. It felt like oil but smelled unlike anything I have smelled. The way it formed droplets was very odd. But the engine should run fine, but only actually doing it will prove that.

Maybe if you think it worth, a real cleaning process will become this engine a real beauty.

I just ran it. Runs well.

Bead blasting is the only way I know of. I have never done it and never will however.

I love OS' port machining in the liners, it is a work of art. The ABN system should be abandoned though, it cannot withstand even a mistaken lean run. Absolute shite. But their ringed versions were the best.

Do you know where I can buy a O S 46fx carburetor new or in good shape?
