  • Today, the Coast Guard took WMAR-2 News out on a boat to get up close to the Key Bridge wreckage site. Pictures don't do it justice. What was once a massive structure, is now broken into mangled pieces of debris. Portions of what once was a roadway jut out of the river. Thousands of tons of wreckage sit on top of the Dali, with the 23 men crew still inside.
    We also got up close to the salvage work. We were able to see crews cutting into the the steel pieces of the key bridge sticking out of the Patapsco River. Engineers are using exothermic tools to cut the metal into “bite-sized pieces," as the Army Corps of Engineers puts it.
    Lightning paused those crane operations most of Tuesday and Wednesday.

    I was at Ground Zero the week of 9/11. Try to imagine steel that weighed as much as 1 and 1/2 tons per linear foot. That is what we dealt with: a 70ft tall mountain of twisted and broken steel girders. This is like a Ground Zero in the middle of a deep murky river. Everyone out there is risking their lives. Engineers are not the ones doing the cutting That is done by technicians, welders and maybe other experienced hands-on trades. Engineers are educated to degree level or above and would be doing the stress analysis on the bridge members before cutting. Most engineers wouldn't know how to operate a cutting torch, these are different jobs. From what I have seen so far the above water cutting has been done using oxy-acetylene cutting torches, although these won't work under water.

    • @lmbear
      @lmbear หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Good post. There is definitely a huge difference between the engineers and welders doing the work here. I'm a structural steel worker with about 30 years of marine industry welding and fabrication under my belt. We used to make fun of Engineers because a lot of them don't have the "hands on" experience that we do. What looks great on paper, sometimes does not work in real life. That's just how it is. A welder/fabricator who has done a lot of repair work on vessels, where you are cutting through "loaded" steel is who should be cutting on those bridge pieces. It's not for the faint of heart either. You have to know what the metal is going to do, when you sever each piece. Often times, that has to be analyzed and worked out in your head, before each cut. And even then, sometimes the spring of the steel that is under pressure can be an eye opener. It's always exciting though, and can be very dangerous. Not a job for a newbie, for sure. I pray for the safety of the workers, and hope they have the skills necessary to complete the job in a timely manner and without any injuries!!

      @frankish5314 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely. I'm a mechanical engineer with 40 years experience designing large scale infrastructure. You and I do completely different jobs, but equally essential. The first thing I thought of when they were talking about clearing the bridge away was doing an analysis of each member because cutting loaded steel (especially underwater) could kill you in a heartbeat! We have Navy Seals trained in demolition, so let's use them. I am not talking about blowing the bridge to kingdom come. Demo charges can sever an I-beam almost as neatly as an acetylene torch. The demolition charges could be detonated remotely with no risk of lives lost. This would be a lot faster as well and everyone wants the port reopened quickly (and safely).

      Or maybe 1 fuel filter, 1 circuit board, 1 fuse, heck even a 10 minute delay in paperwork, or if the tide was 3.5 hours sooner or later. That, is why it's an accident - a chain of events, any one of which being different could have changed the outcome.
      But do understand that the systems on board are designed around redundancy - 2 or more motors for the rudder and steering gear, run off different generators, wiring paths do not run along side (you could have a fire on the port side and there is another copy of the steering gear can still be run from a second generator through starboard wiring.
      These sort of things don't happen because there are alternates, backups and alternatives to those backups. In the worst case an engineer can run a few hundred meters and down a few flights of stairs, manually start a generator and throw a lever port or startboard to steer the ship as a directed by phone or radio from the bridge.
      I have a nasty feeling it may be contaminated fuel - that is pretty much the only thing which is common to all systems - after a long ocean crossing, her tanks would be low so ALL would be topped off - Good practice is to decant known good fuel in the bottom of one tank into a second then fill the first from shore (one lot of fuel is in tank 1, and the new fuel is only in tank 2)
