I met Mark Hall-Patton at the American Alliance of Museums conference a couple years back. His appearances on Prawn Stars helped my family understand my career.
He was great. I wouldn't want to be at a professional conference approached by a string of people that wanna say "i saw you on the teevee!" but he was gracious and professional.

The singular weapons 'expert' the Pawn Stars team had knew about as much as the guy that sniffs paint behind the gun counter. Not shit. A old friend is a TRUE expert, he went to work for many years at a large gun companie. To be more specific, FNH USA and FNH Germany. He learned every gun of the past from the company and all the competers past so, they can snatch a non-pattend design and see if it may fix an issue in another gun. He was one of a few hundred guys where, they had a large desk, a gun cloth and a tool kit. He took guns apart day in day out looking for better designs and design flaws. He did it for a good 40 years. He LOVED his job. He is the true gun expert.

If I'm able to figure that out in 2 seconds with my computer, how'd the Pawn Stars guy not know? I guess an Al Pacino signed God Father screenplay made for better TV. The other time I saw them get it wrong had something to do with a "signed" Bram Stoker book that was printed after the author had died...so there's no way he could have signed it.

It is called a business and a retail operation wants to aim at a margin of at least 40% ideally 50%. If you want full price you can go ahead and sell it yourself, takes more time generally though and that is why pawn shops work it is instant, easy and low effort on the seller's part.

I know a number of pawn shop owners and they actually do spend much of their day like that. Also, not one of the pawn shop owners I know have ever hired an expert to come in and check out an item. If they are not absolutely certain themselves of what an item is and how much they can get for it they won't buy it period. Each is their own expert specializing in certain items. One I know is a gun expert who buys used guns. Another is an expert in jewelry and another is an expert in electronics and old vinyl records and so on. You walk into the store that specializes in used guns with your stamp collection he will send you to his buddy down the street whose pawn shop includes stamp collections. But he, himself would never buy a stamp even if it was worth $50,000 and the seller wanted $10. In most larger metropolitan areas that is the way it works. For smaller areas you get maybe one pawn shop and they will only loan money for gold or tools and high end electronics and you'd be lucky to get 10 cents on the dollar. One buddy of mine spends 12 hours a day sitting at the computer doing nothing but researching how to tell if something is real and what things are worth. He is probably the most authentic expert I know and he only knows about a relatively small number different kinds of items.
The thing with Pawn Stars is you really only watch it to hear the history behind the items. Everything else is just a bit.

Before they ask an "expert", they ask how much the seller would like to get. Almost every time it is exactly half of what the seller wants.

I think they were just showing us that most of the people are more of a prop then a legit expert that 100% does whatever field for a living.
I know a number of pawn shop owners and they actually do spend much of their day like that. Also, not one of the pawn shop owners I know have ever hired an expert to come in and check out an item. If they are not absolutely certain themselves of what an item is and how much they can get for it they won't buy it period. Each is their own expert specializing in certain items. One I know is a gun expert who buys used guns. Another is an expert in jewelry and another is an expert in electronics and old vinyl records and so on. You walk into the store that specializes in used guns with your stamp collection he will send you to his buddy down the street whose pawn shop includes stamp collections. But he, himself would never buy a stamp even if it was worth $50,000 and the seller wanted $10. In most larger metropolitan areas that is the way it works. For smaller areas you get maybe one pawn shop and they will only loan money for gold or tools and high end electronics and you'd be lucky to get 10 cents on the dollar. One buddy of mine spends 12 hours a day sitting at the computer doing nothing but researching how to tell if something is real and what things are worth. He is probably the most authentic expert I know and he only knows about a relatively small number different kinds of items.
