    In the mid-1970s I was working at a nonprofit book publisher in NYC. Our executive director position was open, and the former queen of Sikkim, Hope Cooke Nahuatl, applied and was one of the finalists for the job. No, her resume didn’t include the job of Queen but said she was the head of some royal cultural organization for the kingdom.

    A video explaining why it took so much longer for a centralized Italian state to form compared to Spain and France would be interesting .

    • @Populistking
      @Populistking 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Some of the classical and medieval Indian empires were quite centralized for their time period, they just didn’t last. It’s mostly the same reason Italy didn’t unite for quite some time; other powers kept messing about in their peninsula. Foreign invasions from the Persians, mongols, the Timurids, and many others would come in long enough to sack a few cities and leave the empire of the week in north India unstable and prone to collapse.

    • @satyakisil9711
      @satyakisil9711 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      There's something about Italy that people don't get from northern countries. Italy didn't have the "reconquista" where the northern Gothic German culture replaced the Semitic influence to the south. Italy was sandwitched by the Papal States in the middle so the northern Lombardian culture had much difficulty penetrating the south.
      Today the southern Italian lifestyle is reminiscent of Arab countries - wives live with in-laws, cuisine and art are more attractive than business and engineering, people are tribal and rely on impressing their own communities, families live together in a single home - these traits are generally un-European, let alone northern Italian.

    The Crown Prince of Sikkim, Tenzing Namgyal, was head of house when I went to Harrow; his younger brother, Wangchuk, was also in the house, and his cousin, Prince Shungden Yuthok, was one of half a dozen new boys joining with me - if I recall correctly he was one day younger than me.
    The annexation came as a real surprise, totally unexpected, but it was effectively in April 1973 when the Chogyal's reign as an absolute monarch was brought to an abrupt end, although it wasn't formalised until two years later as explained here. I recall a notice being pinned on the house noticeboard and Shungden (known as Tenzing) quickly leaving the school very early to go home to Sikkim.
    Tenzing, the Crown Prince, died in a car accident in 1978 and his younger brother, Wangchuk, became Crown Prince then later Chogyal (King) when his father died in 1982 - both were sons of the Chogyal's first wife, Sanyo Sangideki, who died young, not his second, Hope Cooke (100% an American, not a Canadian) who was divorced from the Chogyal in 1980, two years before he died.
    Wangchuk was crowned the 13th Chogyal in Sikkim after his father's death, but he's been a reclusive Buddhist monk since then, in Sikkim and Bhutan (he and the King of Bhutan are cousins).

      It's a state in India , which means it still is autonomous.
      Also it's not that big of a deal , these types of small kingdoms tend to be assimilated into neighbouring kingdoms more than being independent. Similar to how the 13 colonies got Texas or Cali or japan has ryuku islands or Spain has Catalunya or uk over malvinas/ falklands ,China over Tibet (and this one is more imp cause Tibet was a major player in the past) , Denmark over Greenland

    The seed of India's annexation of Sikkim was sown by British by demographic aggression by flooding Sikkim with Nepali as indigent labour. British had done to Sri Lanka which is led to current crisis of Tamil. Many Indians were taken to South Africa and to Central Americaan countries such was Guyana etc.

      They (Nepalis) were all over there in India. In other parts, they were in severe minority. Only in Sikkim they were a majority and also in the adjoining North Bengal in West Bengal state. They tried to establish a separate "Gorkhaland" state there (within the Indian Union, of course).

      That I know. In so many perambulations through the NE India I came across hordes of Nepalis (Indian nationals of Nepalese origin). They are forever searching for their livelihood in the remotest corners (remotest locations of Kameng division, NEFA) & possess some "niche" skills (like sawing huge logs of big trees with ten-feet double-manned saws, to usable, straight planks) that make them indispensable in the region.
      It is they who populated the North Bengal (Darjeeling, Kurseong to Alipurduar) & made it a Gorkhaland.

The other Japanese territories of the time were returned to their original owners or granted independence with the exception of the former Ainu territories (basically Hokkaido) since they never had an internationally recognized government.

      We were all kingdoms at some point in time. Where I'm from, the state of Assam wasn't even assam and ruled just by one kingdom. Some places had barobhuyan kings and in some places we had Rajbongshi kings, some places were ruled by Ahom kings. The fact of the matter is, everyone had a mutual understanding that at some level we all share some similarities, cultural habits, religious activities, food, spices and whatnot and ultimately that made us a country. Way back in 13th or 14th century, people were still doing tirth Yatras right? They had to cross 15-20 different kingdoms to reach Badrinath or Puri or heck even Rameshwaram. It's fascinating.

    When the British ruled India (Indian sub-continent), they administered some areas (40% to half the area) themselves and allowed native princely states to have (almost full) autonomy. The relationship was that of a vassal, in which the vassal takes care of the manpower needs of the suzerain (the viceroy) as well as meeting some substantial expenses in the Indian wars. Virtually there was no revenue accruing from these princely states and the prince-lings were left alone to enjoy all their earnings to lead lavish life-styles. The British policy was to advance the Imperial goals, but never to interfere in the nitty-gritty of administering the people. No such princely state is a "nation" in that respect, that would have a direct relationship with the (English) Crown. In that, most (if not all) these states belong to India & to the Indian people - that they'd revert to the Indians there, after the "lapse of paramountcy" (that happened in 1947, August 15).
    That throws up interesting questions. Do the two (successor) dominions inherit "all" the rights the (English) Crown enjoyed, as the English king or queen, concurrently happens to be the "emperor" of India? Or are there nuances in the relationship after the lapse of paramountcy? Can an entity (princely state) attempt to become an independent country (like what Maharaja of Kashmir attempted or Nizam of Hyderabad unsuccessfully did)? Do the people there, want to join India charting a common destiny? It happened with the tiny French & Portuguese possessions, where in, the people overthrew their regimes & declared independence, "to join India". The rule is the same for any princely state.
    India drew a hierarchy for internal administration, with the entities clustered under categories A, B & C. Sikkim was attached to the Indian Union (dominion of India) as Part D state. That was until her people overthrew their ruler & joined India.

      These are local issues largely, projected though as National (which nation!) issues.
      What lurks in the back-ground is the notion that India is one nation (central government was run by the British & India later), that the British used well (rather better) & it paved the way for emerging India, as it is now.
      If you scratch the skin, every part of India throws up such issues that might threaten the Nation, India won't (as has happened in the NE post-independence) allow it & the pendency towards independence witnessed Balochistan issue. No other such issue popped up. Nation is upholding the integrity collectively. All agree on "this" point.

    It was the 90’s, before internet, during my middle school years. We had this “Asian countries” assignment in Geography class. One of us had an old atlas from the 70’s or something in which Sikkim was still independent. This led to confusion and some amusement, because the name of Sikkim is really suitable to make lame jokes in my language, Turkish. The thing is Sikkim pretty much sounds like “sikim” in Turkish, which means “my d***k”. But the officials tried to avoid this effect, so they wrote it as “Sıkkım”, similar letter, different pronunciation. Unfortunately this in turn sounds like “zıkkım” that means “unpleasant, poisonous or harmful fluid” and to lesser extent such food. The jokes abounded of course. In later years, the caption of a DVD subtitle having the word “Sikkim” has become a meme around here, of course with its original spelling and more profane meaning associated with that.

    Sir that's a wonderful video that I have seen today
    My question is was the relationship of the British Raj with Bhutan was similar to that of with Sikkim's or was it a bit different since after independence of India both Sikkim and Bhutan were given similar protectorate status but still it was Sikkim who lost it's independent status while Bhutan survived as an beautiful independent nation

    • @AL-lh2ht
      @AL-lh2ht 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      Bhutan was far more independent and autonomous then sikkim was, in addition as the video explains the main reason, or crisis, that made sikkim lose independence was because the majority of the population was not native and instead recent generational immigrants that had no love for sikkim royalty, so india just came in and annexed it without much issue.
      Basically the national identity of Sikkim died with a super majority not even being native in their hyper small nation,while Bhutan never lost its national identity.

    • @safalyadasgupta
      @safalyadasgupta 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@AL-lh2htmakes sense because even geographically Nepal is more attached to Sikkim compared to Bhutan that's why the Nepali migration happened while the border between Bhutan and Sikkim is largely disconnected by Tibet and also as a matter of fact that Bhutan in itself is an extrem isolated land and have acted as a buffer zone while Sikkim wasn't much isolated since it has the Nathu La pass which is in fact one of the most important area for the ancient silk route
