From what I remember, recessed can HID fixtures were commonly used in indoor environments including shopping malls. As a matter of fact, there is a local shopping mall near my house that still has a good number of 100W H38 mercury vapor recessed can fixtures still in use as of my last visit sometime this year.
Very cool fixtures. Definitely not something that is installed anymore today. I think they were common in commercial applications up until CFL took over. Those fixtures must have a thermal protector in the can somewhere because of the high level of heat generated.
