    You are honestly my favourite beauty vlogger. You are to the point, educated, and clear and tell us what we NEED TO KNOW! I'm so bored of rambling videos that take ages to get to a vague point that is mostly just opinion and not fact anyway. You're honest and I believe what you tell me. You explained the science so I know why I need to look fr these products in particular. You're awesome Wayne, and where have you been all my life?!? I could have done with you around when I was a teenager!! x

    If you have deep, cystic acne, retinol is a good product to use because like he said it alters the way the cells regenerate. Mainly by taking off the top layer of skin cells and letting all the new ones underneath come through to the top like they're supposed to.
    Skin is basically a giant conveyor belt, with new cells on the bottom layers and old ones on the top. When it's working correctly, every month or so the entire outer layer of skin cells falls off and new skin cells are pushed to the top. With cystic acne, this takes a lot longer, resulting in painful, deep, blackheads that can take a very long time to heal.

    • @jbirkh529
      @jbirkh529 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +argella1300 You are right in that retinol or a retinoid such as the retin A that Wayne uses does promote renewal or quicker production of new, more normal skin cells, I don't think they just fall off or even gently wash off. I believe this is why a good (chemical) exfoliate is needed such as an AHA or BHA like the ones Wayne mentioned to help with blackheads. Those exfoliates are necessary also for a brighter (vs duller) complexion. This is what I understand from several articles on the subject as well as the Paula's Choice website. If someone thinks I've come to the wrong conclusion, please feel free to correct me and guide me to a resource that explains it to the contrary. Just trying to help out all of my fellow skin care and cosmetic junkies, addicts, etc. I appreciate tips , education, and advice on the subject. Thanks! -J

      +J BIRKH I had hundreds(sic!) of black and white heads literally all over my face for about 15 years and after zillion spent pounds/dollars/euros on over the counter products I started to apply Tretinoin 2 years ago and my b&w heads have been reduced to a minor issue with only a few left. Tretinoin speeds up cell turn over and exfoliates my skin, no need for any additional acids at least for me.

    • @elena911000
      @elena911000 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +J BIRKH AHA-BHA could be a little aggresive for sensitive skin, there are other exfoliators that can be used instead and still do the required job.

    I've been battling blackheads on my nose and cheeks for years. Been using pore strips since college and now know why the sides of my nose tend to be red. Going to try some of the products mentioned in the info.

    • @squirrel_of_mistri8565
      @squirrel_of_mistri8565 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      How long do you leave them on? I used to have trouble with the pore strips, but if I leave them on for an hour (long enough for the skin to produce oil), the blackheads slip out easily and the strips don't irritate my skin.

    • @shyvicki
      @shyvicki 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just leave them on until they're stiff, which normally takes about 20 minutes. I'll try leaving them on an hour next time.

    • @squirrel_of_mistri8565
      @squirrel_of_mistri8565 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      shyvicki Yes, do try that. Sometimes I leave them on for longer than that if I'm taking a nap with one on. The oils produced by your skin can help you avoid peeling off layers of skin that are not ready to come off, which makes removing the strips much gentler and safer.

    • @syimato
      @syimato 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Squirrel_Of_Mistri oh. never thought of leaving the strip that long. so if i leave it longer until my skin produce the oils, the strips will not damage the skin that much right? what about the blackheads that have stuck on the strips?? wouldnt it not properly be pulled out since the strip got softer??

    • @squirrel_of_mistri8565
      @squirrel_of_mistri8565 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      syimato They seem to do pretty well for me when left on for an hour or so. Lots of blackheads come out, and my skin doesn't get peeled off in the process.
      Before I figured out that I need to leave them on longer, I had an unfortunate incident where I peeled off a small patch of skin. Ouch!

    I think Wayne is pretty much hitting the nail on the head with this video. BHAs work fabulously for unclogging pores, and trying a retinoid is the best thing I've ever done for my skin. To those of you using pore strips, what you're trying to get rid of, especially on the nose, are more than likely sebacious filiaments which you can't get rid of, and aid the skin. Stop wasting your money on pore strips!

I started using it 5 nights ago, just a tiny smear at bedtime and already nearly all the pores are clear, without any irritation at all. Better still, the dry layer is gone and my skin feels more comfortable. Such great information.

      the further away from 7 the stronger the acid or alkaline in the product. Too much acid will strip the skin the same as too much alkaline will erode the skin & make it damaged. Most skin & haircare products need to stay within a 5 level to 8 level range to keep the cells healthy. From a former practicing cosmetologist

    Thank you for this video! I am wondering about a couple of things: do you apply retin-A to your entire face, or just to the problem areas? How long until you see visible results? Can you stop using it eventually? Your comments about the side-effects of retinoids is spot on, in my case. My dermatologist recommended blending pea-sized amount with CeraVe moisturizer. It has made it about 75% more tolerable for me.

    Bless you, Wayne! I am glad I viewed this right this instant, as I was planning to go apply a pore strip before bed! I now feel so foolish, because I have never thought to research the pros/cons of pore strips. I have always assumed that the amount of "gunk" viewable once the strip is taken off was a testament to their effectiveness. I would be so upset were they to damage my skin, and I hate that you had to learn the hard way what really does and does not work. On the other hand, I am so thankful that your skin problems have led you to teaching me so much!!! Paula's Choice products are quite impressive, and I will be ordering the recommended BHA exfoliant from her right away. Thanks again!

    I'm late to the comment party (as usual) but I just saw this and have this question: I switched from Retin-A to glycolic acid (starting with 5%, moving to 10%, then 14%, now 20%) about 6 months ago, always mixing it with moisturizer. I know 20% seems like a lot, but it's just a drop mixed with moisturizing cream at bedtime. I have seen a remarkable difference in the clarity of my skin. No matter what I did, the dead skin cells would.not.budge. Do you think I could alternate products? I'd like to get the benefits of both...since more is ALWAYS better.

      @andrabeta1971 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Leslie Russell Yes. If you use tretinoin daily, every night or every other night, you can use up to 30% glycolic acid for exfoliating purposes like mask one - two times a week, but that day do not use tretinoin. Tretinoin makes skin to peel and flake. Sometimes is better to get rid of all those dead cells using enzyme peeling (15% is ok) or mechanical scrub. Of course, tretinoin works better as anti ageing treatment than AHA and so on.

    Salicylic acid is more commonly known as Asprin. I saw a video where a girl just crushed up a baby Asprin, mixed it with water, and applied it like a face mask at night. What are your thoughts? Might be a cheaper alternative.

      There's a reason why aspirin is made for headaches/minor pain relief and not for your face. Don't take serious advice like that from someone who isn't a professional makeup artist/estethician or dermatologist. I highly recommend Caroline Hiron's blog and her vlog channel for PROFESSIONAL skincare advice. She will set you on the right path, she has changed my skincare life!!

    • @sprscrl
      @sprscrl 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Amoroussparkle Well first of to answer your question about listening to people online...you shouldn't listen to everyone but that's where your sense of judgement should come into it.So unless you'er a complete idiot then why wouldn't you listen to THIS guy...have you seen his skin or are you blind? Also in his other videos he obviously knows what he's doing! Also real make up artist normally need to know about skin care since its part of the whole make up regiment thing! Second,he's not exactly just some 'random' guy online! You can look him up,these days we can it ''googling' but whatever! So he's not exactly 'random'!!!Oh and why would anyone go and ask a dermatologist unless they were either 'rich',which in this day and age there's not too many of them left. Or you have skin problems so bad your doctor,who is not certified to give recommendations like that unless he IS a dermatologist,tells you that you need one! Oh but I'm almost sure you would read some article in a magazine about 'skin care' and then 'listen' to it's random writer! Just because he's talking about it on TH-cam doesn't mean he's for one...random and two....it doesn't mean he doesn't know what he talking about! Not everyone has a dermatologist on call for whenever they get a tiny pimple!!! Plus the dermatologist not only charges you to just ask him his opinion but whatever medicine he prescribes also normally cost a shit load of money!!!! So THAT'S why I'd listen to HIM!!!!

      Hello.. I'm currently in school for esthetics, I'll be done in seven weeks. I might be able to help. Buy an aloe vera plant. Use the sebum (plant liquid from inside the leaves) daily. Also roll a lemon on the counter, cut it in half, sprinkle about a tea spoon of granulated sugar on one of the halves. Exfoliate with the lemon this way once a week. I've seen really good results with this joint routine. Good luck, hope this helps!

    I just got rid of acne for a few month now and I can totally agree with him when he says that you have to be gentle with your skin. I succeed getting rid of it in a very harming and invasive way, my skin was try and oily at the same time, it was constantly peeling of, I had to scrub often and the skin would just not moisturize. Now I use products based on thermal water from Avene and I am so happy with the way my skin is and the way thermal water calms a broken skin. If you had a bad fight with acne and you want to recover I strongly recommend thermal water.

    my favorite for blackheads is oil massage. It pops the plugs out without irritating or thinning the skin. It also cleans makeup off better than anything. You'll know its working after a minute or two when your hands start to feel grainy. My complexion is less oily now too.

    • @agresticumbra
      @agresticumbra 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +JuJuBea161 Which massage oil do you use, and how do you apply and remove it from your face?

    • @JuJuBea161
      @JuJuBea161 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +agresticumbra I use coconut oil but traditionally whats used is a mix of sunflower and castor. you can use whatever you like, just not mineral oils (mineral oil is a lubricant not a moisturizer). Use hot water to remove it. I think it works best if done while the pores are enlarged, like right after a hot shower or in the shower.

    • @JuJuBea161
      @JuJuBea161 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +JuJuBea161 oh, its called "oil cleansing". Sometimes I have to have my sister do it... shes really good at targeting a large blackhead and making it slip out in seconds. I guess its her massage therapist training.

    • @JuJuBea161
      @JuJuBea161 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +agresticumbra oh, one more thing, if you prepare an oil for use in the shower or bathroom, don't allow water to get into the container because then it will grow mold. our other products like shampoos and cleansers and lotions have chemicals in them to prevent that from happening.

    Neutrogena is really good. Well it's good for me anyway. I have been using it for a year now and I have noticed the change in my skin dramatically. Before, I had spots on my forehead and it was all patchy and not so great basically. But after using the neutrogena scrub and the face wash (it's the pink one) my skin is literally spot free, more even toned and smooth.
