  • Author and activist Andrea Dworkin talked about her latest book, Heartbreak: The Political Memoir of a Feminist Militant, published by Basic Books. Ms. Dworkin described her evolution from youthful devotee of music and books to campaigner against pornography and prostitution and international advocate for women. She talked about her self-imposed exile in Crete where she taught herself to write. After discovering the works of early second-wave feminists, Ms. Dworkin had vowed to “give my life to the movement.” The Radcliffe Institute’s Schlesinger Library recently acquired Ms. Dworkin’s personal papers. At the end of the program Ms. Dworkin answered questions from the audience

    'When you are looking at a woman standing at a street corner, you are looking at an incest victim'. I so wished I had heard of Andrea Dworkin when I was in my early 20s. It would really have turned my life around to know that someone understood (and believed) what had happened to me. I have started trying to get people to read her books (and libraries to make her books available to readers), it's unbelievable how much opposition I get. Even if all those people are not themselves perpetrators of child sexual abuse, incest, or buyers of prostituted women's bodies and viewers of porn, they are enablers.

      It is the willful ignorance of those without self knowledge, personal integrity, or a semblance of courage that allows them whether subconsciously or consciously to form a buffer (between them and truth/reality/eventuality of the system under which they are subjugated )of victim blaming, self righteousness and it couldn’t happen to me because I am sPEcial or I have BOundarIEs or a fucking degree, or a 6 figure salary. You and I, as victims of male violence represent an uncomfortable truth that must be explained away or placated or smoothed over so people can go about either a) continuing to live under the delusions disseminated to protect capitalism and patriarchy from meaningful dissent, because it means they do not have to be uncomfortable and change, and do not have to feel guilty or responsible for the mistreatment of others, and b) perpetrating male violence, rape, abuse, oppression, subjugation with impunity, because far from being anomalies, predators are everywhere, monsters do exist, and they are doctors, lawyers, CEOs, politicians, police officers, your polite neighbor, your sweet friend, your charismatic coworker, and your charming Tinder date. I’ll explain that as opposed to survivor, (of course I still believe every woman has a right to call herself that instead of a victim, or whatever terminology feels right in that context), I use victim by way of delineating the other watered down meaning of victim and that of people who have been actively and actually victimized by men which is something you can never alter, it is as much a part of you as your arm, and to propagate the devastating reality that hundreds of thousands of victims of male violence do not “survive”, but they are no less warriors and comrades and of probable additional political significance symbolically in death, because murder and coerced suicide which is still murder is the ultimate silencing of women and it is of the utmost importance that we do not forget them, that they are humanized and mourned and grieved. And finally to dispel the notion that if you fight hard enough, if you do all the right things, if you are “strong” enough you can somehow conquer male violence which is an utter fallacy. I not special or different than those that have died, I did not make different decisions or acted in any way that holds any sort of significance in the outcome of my predation. I survived and they did not and that is deeply sad and I am extremely lucky, but not blessed or exceptional.

    God that man saying mothers are more likely to kill their children. He doesn’t understand the burden childbearing places on women.The stress and the poverty involved as though women who been through 9 months and that painful birth would do it out of pure evil. What an idiot. He can’t see the big picture. She was so patient.

      It's not about painful birth. It's about women being left with trauma from disrespectful, dehumanizing, medicalized birth that treats her like a machine and then sends her home without a social net/community to care for them through this disrespected rite of passage.🖖🏽

      @@drstone7014 again you don’t think there’s a correlation between the immense pressure put on women to be mothers/care for entire families … and them losing it & killing their kids? You genuinely think that isn’t an issue that starts with what women are forced to deal with?

    • @mariedit9935
      @mariedit9935 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@pinwheelart2825 exactly, birth is super painful of course, but the real problem is obstetric violence, male ob gyns are the worst, some female doctors and nurses don't treat patients well either. When a woman is having a baby she is in a vulnerable state and needs support. People defend hospital birth wayyy too much because childbirth is painted as something dangerous (and it can be obviously) that women don't know how to do it. That is one of the most sexist shit men have done in history and feminist motherhood critiques it a lot.

    she said something very very interesting that I remember from 4 yrs ago reading 'heartbreak' - in countries such as india the main predictor for entry into prostitution is poverty, but in the west its child abuse in the home and incest. fascinating and poignant. cultures are different and their difference has differing effects, but slavers are savvy to this - so we need to be too. and fast!

      While patriarchy harms all of us, men too, this issue of men shouldering all of responsibility to financially support the family is no longer the reality. Woman are working in professional fields. Of course, we have to fight for equal pay for equal work, but we are gaining strides in this area. Look at how many women heads of household there are, women are leaving shitty marriages and relationships, women are progressing.
      It’s tragic to see though that conservatism is working hard to silence us, this is nothing new and with technology being faster and farther reaching as technology booms.
