Follow up to this video because I’m seeing a lot of curious people in the comments. It’s 2 years later since I purchased the collection. I sold just about everything within 6-8 months. Let’s just say I purchased a 500,000 house and a fully restored 1968 camaro(to remind me of my diecast find) a few months after I liquidated everything….just to give you guys an idea of what I made on this collection. Thanks for all your kind comments.

I'm not a huge diecast car fan, but the attention to detail on some of those cars is absolutely insane! I bought some this summer at a guy's garage sale to flip on eBay....when I'm taking photos of them, I am blown at the attention to detail!!! It's pretty AMAZING!

As a side note, if one hasn’t done it yet and selling on EBay opt in to the Global Shipping Program. The program works and is much better than handling the international sale by yourself.

Being Canadian myself I was surprised to hear that John has been selling alot of his NASCAR die-cast cars to buyers here in Canada. Because in my many, many years of being on the right side of the pavement/grass, I have honestly only run across one NASCAR fan. He being a co-worker of mine many moons ago. Good on him though. And I wish him nothing but the best in his quest to try & sell off the rest of his wares, as well. That is if he literally does not fall asleep on the job while doing so, as well. 😉

These kind of vids always brings out the "know it all's" who are "experts" at everything. They complain "he'll never make his money back, what an idiot". What they really reveal is how short-sighted most resellers are, and how lazy as well. Most people aren't visionary, which holds them back from taking chances and because they won't, they criticize those who do. There are "doers", and there are "talkers"... most people are the latter. Great job on this one, glad you did the follow-up vid, Pete.

Remember when buying a diecast ask questions and ask for pictures. Most people will say that they are mint but are not. Even if they say it's just been on display it all depends where it was display at. Most display will have sun damage if they were close to a window or under certain light because of the uv especially white diecast will have paint that are crack. One more thing to look out is call rush on diecast it will look like over spray but is not. It will be similar to rust under the paint and is on the zinc alloy that they use to make the diecast. Remember ask if they say it's mint but have blurry pictures or just picture that the diecast is in a dark or super bright light depending on the color of diecast will probably means that is not mint. Even if they take couple of bucks it's not worth that amount even if they take more money off you probably paying for something that is worth 25% to 40% less then what you paying.

This is a once in a lifetime unit - but 95% of storage buyers don't have the resources to purchase something like this. Also - most of the time the public will never know about a unit like this - it won't go to a regular auction and would be offered to a select few buyers or there will be a reserve on it and you won't get it cheap. Facility owners aren't stupid. They will sell it to a friend and split the money. This guy has big ol' balls to fork out that much just looking at pictures online - no doubt.

    • @mediaguy4037

@@mediaguy4037 I bought auctions for 2 years full time. The mom and pop facilities know what's in the units. The big chains like Uhaul could care less - they just want the space empty to rent out again. The individual managers at the big chains may try to work some deals if they are paid a bonus but most of them aren't and don't care. They would all rather the people pay the rent so they don't have to go thru the hassle.

I bet John didn't get much sleep the night before he went to look at these lockers after what happened in Arizona. I'd have been a mess! Ugh, can you imagine if he had opened the locker with the empty boxes first and walked away!? It's a true form of gambling without the cards and casinos, which is exactly why I could never do it. What little money I get on disability, I need, haha! Hats off to you, John. Congratulations on your successful buy - after the years of doing this, you can pretty much retire and just deal with this collection!

that story about the storage unit. Storage companies now rely on on-line sales where you canNOT prevue the items. and you see some who sell units they have staged.

I went through John's solds. His average daily "Cha Ching's" must be at least 100.

If the guy sold at average $90 each, Sold 2,500. He made $225,000 so far That more than 8 times of his investment already. Some may be more or less but than again he averaging about $90 that is a killer score.

I always wonder what happened to cause the owner to not pay for their unit and have it auctioned off. Especially when they have such expensive things that are worth so much. Like if they passed away I can't help but think what about their children? Didn't or wouldn't they want their parent's collections? Obviously it's worth a lot I can't help but think if the heir (s), if there are any.

Prices for most things are a lot higher in European markets. I'm Dutch and I occasionally buy items from eBay US and resell them here, even when paying for international shipping I can make profit. Incomes (but also cost of living) are a lot higher here and collectors have higher budgets.

Are storage auctions worth it, or is this luck? I see storage auctions for online bidding, and they don't look very good. Are live storage auctions worth it? How about those online auctions? I feel most are picked over before they are auctioned off.
