Just figured out that I can copy and emulate all the sounds I ever loved to play my favorite stuff, it may still be worth for me. Cant wait to put my hands on one of these
Some of my fave bands' tones are from an old axe-fx. They hold up real well still and can be complimented with a preamp pedal if the drives are not up to someone's par. Hyvää tavaraa Elmo!
Just noticed the depth of the scallops at first frets, that's deep!!I have currently scalloped a HB fusion and went a little too deep by accident but now feel reassured!! As for the Fractal, it sounds great and I have a pod HD500X which I paid £140 and for that it is amazing (even if i just use it for delays/reverbs etc). I am a great believer in getting equipment when they fall off the radar and cheap ! I can't see the point in chasing the latest tech and paying top dollar as I was paying £140 for an old Ibanez UE 300 (comp/OD and chorus) back in 1983 which is equivalent to about £600 now!! My point being we are living in an age of amazing equipment for little money and do we REALLY need that extra processor or newest pro tools? You do a BRILLIANT job in reviewing and maybe you could look at old tech? By the way have you tried the Marshal Vintage Modern? I think it is the most underrated amp they ever produced! O rant over old boy, at ease!
Thanks! I did try the Vintage Modern when it was new, but I haven't tried it on the channel. I actually can't remember what I thought of it back then. I have been keeping an eye out for one.
Great playing sir! The answer is that most of us aren't good enough to even justify an Axe-Fx Standard. A 10W practice amp or no amp is what we need and it's good enough to learn and get better because ultimately that is the goal - developing our musicmanship. At your level I can understand why good gear is needed but it blows my mind why beginners or intermediate guitarists bother endlessly with gear rabbit holes. I've been in there. I've been playing for 15 years and wasted a lot of time on gear nonsense. An Axe-FX standard is more than enough to get to a great level. The fact is no one gives a shit, especially live.
The axe fx is a nice all in one for the gear and tone nerds and also for the people that just download a preset and move on. I haven't used my small practice amp since getting one. It is super nice to have really good sounding guitar, ability to record the amp and also a direct in take at the same time (also ability to reamp easily), having the presets change in real time live, and it can simply go to front of house or a friend's generic speakers. Some like the gear nonsense so it isn't a waste of time to them. The goal of playing guitar isn't just one goal. Especially in today's age, it is becoming cheaper and easier to be your own producer as well.
with better IR's the older axe fx units still could sound really close to the real thing in a mix, but then again you need to convert the newer modern IR's from 3rd party companirs to syx
Nice work Elmo! How would you compare the ultra to your previous axe fx 2? Does it comes close as feels and sounds or it is far behind? I'm still in a dillema of whether spending 300 pounds more on an ax8(which just like axe fx2). Hope to hear from you :)
If they still support it with firmware its worth it. Im still using a Boss GT5 . I wonder if you could mod the firmware? Likely. It isnt that hard as long as you have the schematic of the chip. Its mote work than most want to do but I jave done it. You solder directs to the chip
Go to the global settings, set the input source to rear but still plug your guitar in the front - this makes the input high-cut filter away, your tones may sound a bit more brighter...and similar to the newer unit......😉
they may not be the latest and greatest, but the Ultra and Standard are the price of a POD HD500X in 2011. You get so much value. I'm picking up an Ultra for $400
needed an amp upgrade (for my trusty Roland Cube 30) but couldn't find something in budget with the flexibility/options I wanted... Suddenly realized used Axe-FX may be my best option!!
I think it's amazing that the product that was like 2 grand some 15 years ago is now really cheap and still very good. Really shows how well they work.
Great video my friend. Hell, I like the old ADA preamps. I played the biggest gig of my life back in like 1990 with one and a Marshall Power amp and it sounded great. 🤣 I just looked on Reverb for used fractal and couldn't find a standard. Lots of Axe8 pedalboard modelers and axeFx2's and a few FM3s. I'm waiting on the axeFx8 pedal baord all in one to get inexpensive enough. One thing about fractal is they upgrade hardware all the time, so if you wait long enough you can get a good deal on what is considered outdated fractal stuff not supported maybe, but yet still pretty good. I worked in the IT field and I hate using apps and the computer for musical products. Databases ok, spreadsheets, ok, etc, but I prefer amps and such just work with knobs and / or have the menus on the product so I can adjust as needed, etc, but I'm old and sick and cranky. 🤣 I've been very frustrated lately because I've not been able to play because of health problems and it's soooo frustrating. I used to play almost daily, and then there would be times I might not play a week or so, but then I would be right back at it again. It's been almost 2 months now. Yikes! Anyway. I hope all is well there in Viking Nord land sir 🤣 and please take care! Tell the kids in your class an American said hello and to study hard! ♥️🤟
The ADA preamps are analog tube preamps so its quite a difference between that and a digital modeling preamp like the Fractal stuff not that you cant get good sounds out of both types, i run an old Boss modeling rack preamp myself with good results and i also have an analog Marshall JMP1 preamp and a tube amp head that i really dont use much.
@@Stefan- Indeed it was a tube preamp. At that time it was all the rage. 🤣 I thought it did sound good though and I would still use it today if I had one. I've also played theu a JMP1 and it was cool .
@@hoosierdaddy2308 Both the JMP1 and ADA preamps seem to have gone up in popularity lately so you are not alone in considering using one. I actually got the JMP1 at the same time i got the Boss GT-Pro unit and was planning on using the Boss for just effects and the JMP1 as a preamp together with it, but i thought the Boss rack sounded good as a preamp and just used the Boss since it was much simpler to use just one integrated unit.

Yes - Everything old is new again. Elmo plays well. Sometimes he says things that are not intended to be funny. He said, "I don't like extra gear." He says this while sitting in front of a vast wall of amplifiers and pedals. Then I think about the gadget he just bought. It is a gadget that uses digital technology to simulate what he can already do with all that gear stacked behind him. Yeh - Life is complicated. Thanks for the video.
So it’s a rackmounted digital modelling amplifier that can modulate a wet/dry setup all in one amp? Am I right? Pretty cool! It’s fun to learn about newer tech, but I just like the look and thought of a tube amp more. Don’t know why, I’m just a man of tradition maybe😂
I think i would like to hear your opinion on, pedal board vs solid state all in one pedal. Personally I’m a individual pedal kind of guy. Why, because it’s easier to replace one pedal as opposed to a whole all in one pedal. Oh yet again, excellent demo video review of something.
I've seen some guitarists (like Vai and Petrucci for example) using the Axe fx during the second half of the 2000 and the first half of the 2010, but it looks like they came back to their old and heavy amps. I would like to know if it was because of endorsment contracts or a matter of sound...
Axe FX units close the gap on convenience vs sound. They come VERY close. But, unfornuately there's still know true replacement for the real deal. Axe FX is 100% worth it, though.
I don't think so. I just thought about this too as my local GC had one on the cheap. I played it and it was great. My thinking is that it is a complex piece of electronics. At this point it is about 18 years old. Components fail. It may sound very good but ultimately it will break down. Do I want to bother with expensive repairs, lack of updates- no. I would also want the new Axe-Edit software on the PC. A new Axe-FX MK II Turbo has a better FEEL also when playing. Tone wise, I doubt anyone could really tell a difference and almost definitely not in a mix. You are also looking at roughly $700 bucks for one. For slightly more, you can get into a slighly used FM3 that is running the new Cygnus firmware. The latter will in many cases sound and feel better, be more reliable and possibly have an option of a warranty. If I bought used 2nd hand, say from GC, I would get a warranty. FM3 or FM3 or Axe-FX will also receive regular updates which the Axe-FX standard no longer will. Bottom line- the standard was leading for it's time but it's time has mostly passed. A FM9 Turbo would suit most people best if they can afford one.
Hello from Chile! Play some Stratovarius or Saija Varjus - i don’t care. I’ve seen people using axe fx to create difficult effects, so maybe that is one way to use it?
I was always tube amp and pedal guy until I got a Kemper. A good profile sounds and most importantly feels like a tube amp. The Axe FX and Helix don’t feel like an amp to me
My quad cortex sounded great but it died after about 10 hours of use. They had to send me a brand new one. I sold that new one without even opening it.
