The way the band explain it themselves, Vessel was visited in a dream by an ancient god just called "Sleep", which is why the songs are "tokens" to Sleep
Another note on the band in general, the album was recorded by II, the drummer, and all the other instruments were recorded by Vessel. They have two more members, III and IV, who play the guitar and bass at the live shows.
From what I understand, Sleep is a representation of the shadow, our repressed emotions, and the line "I hate the way you look at me when I'm not understood" supports that for me. We tend not to understand or try to understand our more "negative" emotions and shove them down, and sometimes we act up out of the blue from triggers because the shadow is trying to be seen, trying to be understood, trying to be incorporated in all that we are. But "we are exhausted by all this pretending", this pretending that everything is fine and that the shadow doesn't exist. To me this song is this shadow speaking all the way through, saying "look you think I'm dangerous, but you've made yourself lonely by avoiding to take a look inside, maybe by actually getting high instead to repress everything further down, but it's time to shelter me, to take me in as I am and to move forward".
Also an interesting point: On the spectrum of light, scarlet and violet are opposite to each other. So "I look for scarlet, you look for ultraviolet" could mean that Vessel is searching for something that's not only the opposite, but ultra opposite of what the shadow/Sleep needs.

Interesting analysis! I always hear the line "You need a melody, I only need the silence" as being Sleep (or the spirit) talking to him, because to truly connect with the higher self and the other side, we need silence and calm to tune in, but it's like Sleep is saying Vessel is expecting something big to happen and clear, loud signs like we see in movies, when the secret resides in the silence. Could also be referring to the difference between human form and spirit form. As humans we get bored or overwhelmed and escape through different means, like music, to feel whole, when spirits, again, only need silence.
