Talofa! It is a pleasure to see a reaction video to our culture. I have never been to Samoa, but I am Samoan. Born and raised in California. I grew up seeing my dad and uncles doing the Sunday Umu. Since the passing of my father and most of my uncles I have not seen an Umu for the past 10 years😢. However, sometimes families may do a umu for a birthday party, church function, or even a wedding. In the U.S. the best place for you to experience the Samoan culture is at a traditional wedding or during a function at a Samoan church. Or, you can just ask a Samoan person if he can plan a day for you to experience a Samoan traditional umu. If you have plans to visit Hawaii, try visiting polynesian cultural center or one of the ranches there that has tours with a luau. There are actually millions of Samoans on the mainland and many of us still cling to our beautiful culture. Although, each family differ in the details the main points of the culture is still there; Jesus, Family, Gatherings and food.😊Hope this helped, God bless and tofa soifua❤

Talofa! (Hello in Samoan 😊), thanks for this reaction video. I agree that it’s so important for us all to learn and we love sharing our island culture because the more we know about each other, the more peace we can have in one accord. 😊
Just wanted to chime in on some of the questions you’ve shared.
Danny did a great job answering your question about tasks and responsibilities among our Samoan men and women.
As for where we are mainly in America, our main surge of migration to the US is because of two factors, religion and the military. We came through the need of America to use our port in Pago Pago (our capital) during World War 2, roughly in the 1950’s. We were also brought over through the missionaries(mainly Christianity, Mormonism and Catholicism).
As for where we mainly reside, you’ll find big populations of us in the West Coast (closest to the Pacific Ocean) because Samoa is located in the South Pacific Ocean. So you’ll find a lot of us in states like California, Utah, Oregon and Washington. Then a sprinkle of us in many military based cities. We’re actually one of the highest recruitments of all branches of the US military per capita.
As for where we get most of our exports, they’re mainly from neighboring countries like Australia, Asia, New Zealand and the US.
Keep up the great work in spreading the message to “Get to know others.” God bless you and your family. Hope this helps. We’re an open book as people and yes, it takes a village (of humanity). 🥰🤗👍🏽
Oh, and the proper pronunciation of our home is Samoa (sah-mo-ah), short A in the first syllable as in Sausage lol) then mo (long o) and a (as in sausage again lol). Saaaahmoa Chiihhhooo!!! 😃👍🏽 ❤

Ah! We did see a lot of people who may have been of the Polynesian culture in California on our trip a few years ago. We watched a few videos for the pronunciation afterwards lol. Thanks for answering our questions and welcome to the family. We're excited to learn more about your culture.

Talofa! I love the reaction and I love your journey to seek all the different culture and share your discoveries. I to am Samoan Afakasi (Half Samoan & Half White) and married to a full Samoan with 3 adult children living in Oceanside California. I have been to the island several times both Samoa (Which my family is from) and American Samoa (Which my husband family is from) Pretty much all islanders in the South Pacific are Polynesians such as Tongans, Tahitians, Hawaiians, Fijians, New Zealander and many more. There's a lot of history with each island and a lot of similarities within each culture. Samoans have migrated to the West Coast of America mainly California due to the military. Today you will see Polynesians sprinkled throughout the United States hugely pursuing life as a professional Athlete (NFL, Rugby, College Softball, Volleyball etc. and Performers. One last fun fact, American Samoa is part of the U.S.A since 1900 and the island of Samoa is a Independant State Territory. The eastern side of Samoan island was designated to America and the Western was assign to Germany back in the late 1800's done by Europe when they invaded the islands. Sorry just giving a little history... But Thank you again for you reaction to our Amazing Samoan Culture. 💛🏝🥥🌴

1.Boys are taught as soon as they are able to learn.
    2. Huge Samoan communities live on the entire US western seaboard, from California to Alaska and the populations have spread to inner states such as Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. But the US military has helped placed Samoan communities in almost of the 50 US states as well as other countries around the world.
    3. Women are usually in the home maintaining it and caring for the children.
    4. It is pronounced Sah-moh-Ah( Sāmoa)
Thank you for the video! I’m glad you love our way of life. I hope you get to visit us some day! 😊

Traditionally Men do most of the work when it it comes to cooking because of the work involved. Boys start as young as possible learning how to cook and farm. Starting with small tasks and working to larger ones. Young boys sharpen their skills during the week by doing the small cooking for the family like the “saka”. Saka is prepared bananas, Taro, and etc. Then when it comes to Sunday they join the older men in cooking. Women traditionally rear the children and take care of family matters concerning the day to day family duties. But with western influences more families have a family structure of women rearing the children, cooking, cleaning, and etc. but the roles revert back to a traditional structure during cultural events. However Women are important to our culture and are revered amongst the children more than father in majority of all the families. Interesting enough in Samoan Deity our version of a god of war is actually a goddess of war her name Nafanua. It is tough on the island for young women because of the conservative values our culture has for them. They have to watch how they dress and present themselves. Always dealing with the pressure of not shaming their families. Indeed we are family centered culture with the hierarchy of roles. More often time then not, the family motto for most if not all families is “the whole is greater than the individual”. This mindset is why it is easy for Samoans to thrive in team sports like Football and Rugby or even being successful in the military. Because they are taught young their role and to do it well for the sake of the family or team. We have a beautiful culture and like all cultures we have not so good things. Hope this helps with exploration into Samoan (Saw-Mow-an) culture. You will find that what I have explained is prevalent in all cultures in Polynesia. Tofa Soifua.

4:21 I can only speak for myself and my family, but my dad started teaching me how to cook when I was 6. Before that I had to sit, watch, and most importantly: not interrupt grown folk with my questions. I wasn''t great at the last part, but it's the thought that counts.
In general, my uncles handled cooking big meals for family gatherings, whereas my aunties handled certain side dishes as well as cooking daily meals around the house. My dad cooked every day and taught me how to cook young bc we decided as a family that it was best to keep our white mama away from the Samoan cooking. Spaghetti? HAVE AT IT! Fa'alifu fa'i? Sit this one out ma, we got this covered.
I should note: this was all in the Bay Area. My cousins in our village started helping when they were 3 & 4, and our parents were sure to remind us about that if anyone complained. Idk if they were ALL helping that young, but I've for sure seen a meaty 4yo carry a large bag of rice from the garage to the kitchen on more than one occasion 😂

The women take care of the children and the home. From schools to church. The food imports to the US are mostly from New Zealand and asian stores. Samoan markets (US) are usually small but carry nearly all its needs for local communities because Americans are not use to the taste. For Samoans the taste is heavenly. 👍😎😁😇

Malo soifua manuia! js helping out with some of the questions. The women's roles are really just to take care of the family, while the men provide if that makes sense, and they get all there stuff from New Zealand, then American Samoa gives some of those resources to Samoa (Western Samoa). hope that helped. Manuia le aso! (Have a good day!)

The unko at the end wove a basket with coconut leaves. Baskets, bowls, and plates are usually woven to carry and divide the food from the umu.
Samoa is divided into American Samoa & Western Samoa. Culture & language are exactly the same, the difference being that American Samoa is a US territory, whilst the other is Independent Samoa.
You can find Samoans in many states, and in many countries.

You definitely identified the most important part. We own our land....Nobody owns the land and its against the law to sell Cultural land. So it is passed down from one generation to the next. That is why we are not easily intimidated because we control our own destiny. Nobody can kick you off your land. If you have Samoan blood, just go to where your family is from tell the chief I am related and then ask for some land to live on and he will give you land for you and your family.
