    Hi Mike, here are a few ideas for future videos:
    * How to best set a volume and gain for voice overlay and background music.
    * What is the best order of applying effects and what to avoid: eg if you set the gate and then adjust volume then gate settings will be invalidated.
    * What effects are better to be used in the singletrack and when/when in multitrack mode
    * What is the difference between DeNoise effect and Noise Reduction process.

    i've been grinding through tutorials trying to learn how to fix some vocals from a video I recorded for days now. and then i found this video and immediately when you said to delete the one channel and copy and paste the remaining one i was like OHHHH. then you explained how to use the declipper in 30 seconds while every other resource i found spent 5-10 mins and didn't even give the proper instruction.
    dude... THANK YOU 🙏

      @@MikeRussell do you happen to have a tutorial on matching the sound of audio files? i have multiple vocal recording files from the same recording session that each had different things needing to be cleaned up. so i edited 1 of the 4 using your tutorial here and got it to a point that i'm pleased with. thinking maybe i can save a preset of all the effects in the rack, any gain adjustments and so on, match the volume and apply it to the other 3 files but i'm not sure what to search for to find the video i need and was so happy with the results from your instructions.

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you've summed up here is exactly what you'd want to do. Once you've got the clip sounding as you like then as long as they were all recorded on the same mic in the same environment you'd be safe to save the effects rack.
      Line the clips up on a track in the multitrack and then put the favourite you've saved into the effects rack on that track. You can also match the clip loudness across all your clips.
      Don't forget the power of the speech volume leveller to even out all the volumes in the various clips as well.

    • @SteveGriendling
      @SteveGriendling 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeRussell sooo i thought i saved the effects preset, however, me thinks there might be a difference between using the effects rack for effects and using the drop down menu. i used the drop down menu and none of the effects i used are in the preset. think i may have oofed. 😬

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless you saved the preset in each effect it won't be saved. If you line them up in the effects rack and then save the entire effects rack as a favourite that would be the way to go

    What Mic did you use here and where can we learn how you edited it for that crisp sound? Is it the AKG C414 XLII (saw your recommendation on another video)?
    And any advice on how you treated the room? Our current setup is still going to be next to a busy road for the next 6 months so we're worried the AKG C414 XLII may pick up more of that background noise than something like the Shure SM7B.

    When you "sped this bit up" (03:36) was that done in post-processing (ie speed the video) or did you do something that made the process/effect finish faster in real-time? I could certainly use something that does the latter... applying RX7 across a long audio file takes forever!!!

    Hi Mike, that's great - thanks. I have a file that is not clipped, but the signal was distorted. Is this fixable?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That'll be analogue distortion picked up in the recording chain. You may still be able to improve it using EQ to reduce the most distorted frequencies but I would suggest, to get high quality audio, your best option is to check the recording chain for where the distortion is introduced and re-record.

    • @experiencemedia1148
      @experiencemedia1148 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeRussell Thanks Mike. Yes, so from your experience, the only audio distortion that can be properly addressed is when it is clipped?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not quite as simple as that but that's why it's important to follow a good recording chain and make sure gain staging is set to ensure each stage is clean and unclipped

    Hello Mike, thanks for your amazing video and superbly clear explanation. I have audio files with asymmetrical distortion, the upper half of the waveform is fine, the lower half is severely reduced. The cause was too long cables on the microphone preamps during recording. Any thoughts on how I could proceed to rescue these?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the asymmetric waveform can be adjusted in Audition when normalising by ticking the DC Bias Adjust and setting the percentage to adjust by. To correct it at source you'll probably need to change your mic cables.

    • @basmolly
      @basmolly 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeRussell Thanks so much for your quick reply. The recordings are historic and I can't repeat the recording. The lower halves of the waveform are badly distorted and clipped (nowhere near the digital limit) and the upper halves are fine. I am toying with the idea to substitute the lower halves by inverted copies of the upper halves but envisage major crossover clipping on the zero line. It's a shame because that version of my band really cooked!

    It depends on what type of mic do we use right?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really. Any mic can distort if it’s being recorded too hot (loud). It’s most important to get levels right when recording whether you have a condenser or dynamic mic. If you’re using an XLR mic you do this via your interface or mixer. If you’re using a USB mic you did this via your computer’s sound preferences.

    Clipped audio isn't always the same as distorted audio. I have tracks where the audio is distorted from the mic being too sensitive, but recorded in camera at normal audio levels. Therefore, diagnostics doesn't recognize it as being clipped and won't repair it.

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you need to look into the settings on the camera to see if you can turn down mic gain which would help

      I've been experimenting with settings on this application and still not able to resolve some hefty distortion in this recording I have. Any other ideas or recommendations? The clipper repaired what it is going to repair, but interestingly, it didn't make much of a difference. In this case, the gain was up waayy too high on the sound board.. 😬

      Another question, if I may; I'm not sure if the problem IS clipping now. I've pulled the file into Audacity but there's none of those huge spikes (There are very few parts that go above 0.1 or below -0.1, and those that do don't go above/below 0.2/-0.2). It does sound very similar to the sample in your video though. Can you think of anything else I can try?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In Audition there is a diagnostic tool as part of the DeClipper which will identify potentially clipped samples. Sadly this feature is not in Audacity.
      If there are any points that are above 0db then you have clipping in the audio I’m afraid.
      Maybe post a sample of your audio in our community? community.musicradiocreative.com/

    I'm not sure why I thought, after working 31 years with Audio Softwares and as an engineer and producer, that this would work. I accidentaly had a wrong setup and recorded as "mic" instead of line in, so when I panicked...I looked up "interweb" and the first video I found was yours...so I decided to try...long story short, the software can NOT fix distorted audio.
    Now I can spend the equal amount of time to uninstall all, that adobe installed, just to run this program...
    but thanks anyway...it's my fault...next time I listen to my instinct.
    I'm just gonna copy hear, what the "interweb" and AI says:
    "You can do things to soften the blow, but once the signal is distorted, parts of the audio waveform are lost, never to be recovered."

    My son shot my band on stage at a live concert. The system was enormously loud with a ton of low end. Sounded great in the audience but the audio recording on the video footage is distorted as if it were clipping. Tried your method here and it came up no errors found. Any suggestions?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, the classic concert recording conundrum! Sorry to hear that the method didn't work in this case. You might want to try using EQ to reduce the low end frequencies and then experiment with a declipping tool or distortion reduction effect in your preferred audio software. If the distortion is too severe, it might be a challenge, but a combination of careful EQing, compression and possibly some reverb might help mask the issues.

      I would suggest if you've not recorded the audio yet then it's best to avoid distortion altogether by ensuring the microphone levels are set correctly. It's better to avoid than try to fix.

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you followed all the procedures? How many possible clipped samples are there? If that shows zero then it’s likely clipping isn’t your problem.
      It’s also possible to show zero possibly clipped samples if the audio has been recorded in 16 bit and normalised. While there will be no clipping left the audio will still sound clipped.

    Unfortunately, Audition that I use since it was CooEditPro time, does not fix distorted audio in most cases. This was school example with clean speech that was too saturated. Even after repair the "harshness" is still heard almost the same. It fixes that "samples" are not cut harsh, but the "smoothness" of audio is not restored. Even more evident is when restoring music recorded with low end device (smart phone). Bass kicks are often a bit lower than mids and this tool does not even picks them as clipped, because they are not clipped as flat line, but was rather clipped analog way since microphone is over saturated. Audition does not find clipped samples.
    Also odd to me: if small portion of audio is marked way MORE samples is found as if 30 minutes of audio is market. Same for decrackle.

    • @MikeRussell

      Unfortunately, as you've found, distorted audio can often be difficult to fully repair.

    Hey Mike, I have received an audio file from a client and she let the "Auto level" on when recording, so there are instances of clipping throughout the whole audio after a silence space. However, when I do the Amplitude statistics, it shows the number of Clipped Samples but the DeClipper can't find clipped peaks to repair. How do I fix this? The peak altitude is around 1,86dB, is there something to do with it?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure of the recording set up so don’t know what you mean by “auto level” set on.
      Without seeing and hearing the audio and knowing the recording chain it’s very difficult to help as it may be that the file has clipping without exceeding 0db as it’s analogue clipping created earlier in the chain before being limited back out or it’s been recorded with analogue clipping and normalised back down beneath zero but still with the clipping.
      If de-clipping doesn’t work then you’re left with trying to use EQ to reduce the harsh sounds.
      This might be one for our community where you can share samples community.musicradiocreative.com/

      @@MikeRussell Thanks for the fast reply mate. It's really hard for me to explain with more details because I'm not an audio expert, only know the basics, haha.
      The auto-level that I was mentioning is the switch from H1n recorder back where it increases and decreases the recording volume depending the captured sound height.
      Well, it's nothing I can do about now.
      Thanks a lot for your videos mate, it's helping me a lot to understand more how to use audition and what all those information means.

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’d suggest turning that off for future recordings as a start. You can add compression in post processing to deal with reducing the dynamic range. As long as the recorded levels are beneath 0db then you can work with the audio.

      Clipping is never good. The correct thing to do would be to record without any clipping, the method will help you restore clipped audio but there is always the ceiling of 0db that you want your audio to stay under.

    I’m currently editing a piece for somebody and their audio is extremely distorted. When I go into audition and run the scan for clipping, the software isn’t picking up any of the issues and I’m unable to correct any of it. Do you have any potential solutions for me?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Run the amplitute statistics over the audio and check the maximum amplitude figure. It could be that it's analogue distortion that someone has recorded and then normalised hoping to lose the distortion.

    • @Skydrag.V60
      @Skydrag.V60 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeRussell I’m working with the original, raw files so I don’t think anybody else has tampered with it but I’ll go ahead and run that and check for the max amplitude figure. Thanks!

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there is audible clipping but the max amplitude is beneath 0db its likely someone has normailsed the file. In amplitude statistics you'll also see a statistic for possibly clipped samples, again if there is audible clipping and these show zero it's likely somebody lowered the amplitude before giving it to you.
