    If you’ve been with someone for awhile, you definitely deserve a raise. Cost of living does go up. If you started at $12/hr, 4 years later you shouldn’t still be at $12/hr.

    as a nanny, $12-$15 an hour is low pay for a full time nanny. for a once in a while date night i’d say that’s fine but don’t lowball a professional. It’s annoying to go to an interview and listen to what a parent expects from you and then have them tell you they’re only going to pay you $12/hr.

    Imagine having a full time job, caring for a family with multiple children, making 12$/hr, having no benefits, no room for advancement or raises. That is your FULL TIME JOB. If you can't afford to give someone reasonable pay for their FULL TIME JOB, you likely aren't a good fit for hiring a nanny. Think of it from the Nanny's point of view Kyra, would you live a comfortable life in your area if you only made 12/hr with no hope for a raise?

    I'm 50, I'm a certified child development caregiver, I have CPR/AED/First Aid certifications, have taught preschool in an accredited school for 10 years and have been a nanny for 10 years. I think that others have no clue about what a nanny really does. I am Mom when mom is not available. I do laundry, cleaning, cooking, all childcare, teaching, crafts, lesson plans etc. I could never accept (and most reputable nannies couldn't) less than $15 but normal in the nanny industry is upwards of $20-$30 an hour, with raises yearly and pay commiserate with experience.. It IS actually a full career path and there are NCS that have more experience than most parents. I've also raised my own children who are now 25. So bringing awareness to the field is imperative to keep good people in the nanny world. Also making sure your nanny knows just what an invaluable part of the household she is and how important she/he is to your family goes a long way in having (and keeping ) a fantastic nanny.

      Ex: “ parents agree to notify nanny/sitter should work place be under any sort of surveillance at any given time. Surveillance sill not extend to bathroom “
      Also I am not hating on Kyra in anyway! Wages depend on the state you work in + experience etc.

  • @laurenengberg5540

    The main thing, I think, is having a nanny is a luxury. If you can't afford childcare at a center, then you definitely cannot afford a nanny. I think you would be surprised how many parents assume nannies only work because they like kids, and that they should be at your beck and call no matter what. I love kids, yes, but not enough to only make $60 a day. This is my job. I have bills, and my own life. My life does not revolve around your needs. I can for sure, 100%, be flexible. But there are limits.

    • @SherlockH4688
      @SherlockH4688 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Kyra kinda seemed like the “nanny” would be at her beck and call any time she needs it. That part bothered me a little. A nanny is a job and you have set hours for that job. It’s not whenever you feel like having them come over... 🤨

      @@SherlockH4688 Yes. What u described is a "babysitter". A part time job. Being a "nanny" is a full time, mostly set hours, hopefully some educational classes, CPR certified, a career. Unfortunately some people (like me) is not (I’m from Germany) but I’m a single mom who is new in a city and don’t have friends or family. I need a baby sitter sometimes (I wish I would have them regularly) but I can’t afford. Minimum wage here (Berlin) 10€. I’m willing to pay 15 for my 11 month old daughter, because I do look for quality, it’s my child safety! But I really cannot afford more, I wish I could and if I did (if I was in kyra position) I would give 25-30€ at least for 1 child. But I can’t! And I need one. So what can I do?
      Ya know? So I’m not sure about it being a luxury. I respect nannies and I don’t expect them to be on call. I would do it in advance appointments, but I can’t offer more.

    As a professional nanny, I appreciate that you tell people up front there's cameras everywhere. I basically always work assuming there are cameras. I've been a professional nanny since 2006 when the teddy bear cams were popular lol. The average rate for 3 children, especially so young, is about $20/per hour. I appreciate you being selective, but $13-15 would be for 1 MAYBE 2 kids. If the range is 12-25 the 25 would basically for 3+. So just consider your options. Also, I'm not sure why you quoted "career path", but it IS an actual career for people, so please keep that in mind.

  • @KatTheTruth

    You... Stay at home, correct? Or do I not know something and you work full time? Or do you just have someone part time while you edit videos, and whatnot? I don't watch regularly and didn't know you have a nanny.
    I am a nanny, a professional full time nanny. I command $25 an hour, but with education in early childhood education and years of experience, that makes sense. And if someone wants to lowball me and offer less, I would politely decline. If you can't afford to pay for a good nanny well... You get what you pay for.
    If someone has nanny cams, that's okay. I expect a person to have them. Not a big deal.
    Honestly, if you want a quality nanny, care.com is okay... I have used them as a caregiver. But the real quality, smart, background checked and experienced nannies who are in it professionally, you find through nanny agencies. Nannies don't need to be college girls. It sounds kind of like you have babysitters, not really a nanny. I like to distinguish between the two.

    You’re actually supposed to give your nannies a W2, not a 1099 - they are not independent contractors. You as an employer should be paying into your nanny’s social security, unemployment, etc. And raises should occur annually regardless of if if there is an addition to the family. It’s important to remember that this is someone’s livelihood, not just a babysitting job. I’ve been a nanny for 9 years and had babysitting experience prior to that so I know these things from experience. I highly suggest you do some more research.

    I think there is a difference between "babysitting" and "nannying"... So yes, I have had ten years "babysitting" however I have only been "nannying" for 2 years. But I can see how that would be confusing for both parents and those trying to get a job..
    Babysitting: watching kids for short periods of time (date night, grocery shopping, cleaning, ect...). Most of the time they do not feed, bath, drive, ect..
    Nannying: More of a 9-5 type job. Watching children for long periods of time. Need to feed, bath, watch, play, drive, ect.

    Reading these comments make me FEEL SO MUCH BETTER on why I’m quitting bb sitting for my neighbor! Thank you ! You guys helped. I’m definitely a push over& been pushed over .
    Edit : 200.00 a week 2yr. Old & 5 yr. old , 4 dogs, light cleaning, took dogs to vet once, took kids to dr. Appointments, go to their house (across the street) , the mom would call and ask to take the kids to my house when she wanted her alone time when she called off of work (I couldn’t take them to my house any other time- she had cameras so wanted to keep an eye out) , id pick them up from school when needed, (they got older and in school eventually) I’d wait for payment if they didn’t have it on Friday.
    To their defense tho:: I wasn’t considered a nanny. I didn’t sing them ABCs all day , I did talk and care and joke tho. I was just kinda like the “cool aunt” watching tv quite a bit. I did drink their sodas, and ate (snack size)what they would eat for lunch.
    The last couple weeks tho, I don’t think the mom liked me anymore. Ohh. Ya. I do have first aid/ cpr, and fingerprint clearance card & food handlers because I work in healthcare. I have to update all that stuff every couple years.
    I had to be here at 8a- to as late as 6p usually 5p m-f
    I did call off on an average about 3 times a month. Because I would have to go to meetings at my real job. I worked p/t overnight in a grouphome. When the kids went to school full time my pay was 80-90 $ a week . All day Friday cuz the school here is Monday-Thursday only.
    I wrote a lot!

    Hey Kyra, I have been here since you started. I can't believe how much you guys have grown and love seeing your videos. This video also struck something with me as I am an Early childhood Educator and currently Nanny. although I do not know what you pay your nanny, I just want to mention 12-15 is pretty low especially if you expect anything other than watching your kids. Being a nanny is a profession, everyday you leave your child's well-being and lives in our hands. Please for everyone watching, I hope you pay your nannies well because it is not worth having someone get tired/upset with their job and taking it out on the children or just not trying their hardest when you're not around. They have bills to pay, lives to go home to as well.

    Just an idea regarding why there aren’t profile pictures on some of the online profiles.. I worked in nursery’s here in the U.K. (daycares to you guys), ages 0-5yrs. I’m much older now (10yrs older than you Kyra!), so I’m not ashamed now, but back when I was younger & working my literal butt off - if I went for new jobs, it was so obvious I was turned down & not even considered before the interview was started because of my size. I’m plus size, this has never ever stopped me running after toddlers or children, rolling around on the floor with them, changing diapers, making snacks & cooking meals from scratch, vacuuming, cleaning, disinfecting, washing, soothing, cuddling, rocking babies to sleep (often more than one at a time!) - weight doesn’t determine how active, nurturing, or hard working I was; but I was pre judged before I’d even opened my mouth or they’d heard my work experience.
    It may be the case that some of them men / women just don’t want to be dismissed straight away. If you ever see a profile that hasn’t got a picture but peaks your interest, I’m more than sure they’ll send you one in private.
    I also would never post a picture personally of me with someone else’s children, & although I had little nieces & a nephew back then who I took care of & played a huge active roll in their lives at the time, they’re now grown & in their teens. I don’t know anyone else with kids!
    Great pointers though :) First aid certificates are definitely a must in my opinion. x

      Laura Williams ok... maybe your assuming the parents aren’t interested in you because your “plus size” Unless someone comes right out and says it then aren’t you judging them? I’ve never interviewed for a nanny position that I didn’t get the job, however if that were to happen I would contact the family and ask them what was lacking in my resume or interview. So maybe say something like this... “Thank you for taking the time to speak with me, I’m happy you found a nanny that meets the needs of your family. I’m always looking to better myself and my skills, can you please share with me what your new nanny offered that I did not, or can you tell me how I can improve myself in your opinion.” I think you’d be surprised what you would learn. It’s probably less about your size, and maybe it’s you not feeling confident or something. Getting feedback is super important and helps us grow ourselves even when it’s not always positive.
      Best of Luck being a nanny is a full on job, but the rewards are incredible.

      Laura Williams I am from the U.K. and worked as a nanny for many years. I worked for a lot of aristocratic family’s and found that some of these family’s would definitely not look at anyone bigger than a size 12 ( I think that’s a 10 in the U.S ) .... and there seemed to be some kind of competition to see who had the prettiest nanny! Thankfully the family’s I worked for were all lovely, but some of the girls I knew in the nanny circles I worked in, struggled to sometimes get jobs, even though they were fantastic nanny’s with great references! Uuuurgh, you would think it was more important for someone to be capable, fun and competent when looking after your children, not what size they are or how pretty! ☹️

    • @LauraBidingCitizen
      @LauraBidingCitizen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sam I Am Thanks Sam! Exactly!! Absolutely broke my heart. I was between the ages of 17-20 at the time (32 now.. time flies!) & I won’t lie, as a teen it really knocked my confidence. I went both through an agency & advertised independently, I took extra outside courses in CV writing back then to make sure everything was ‘polished’, I also went out of my way to get second / third opinions by colleges etc on it in case I could change it, there was nothing wrong with my CV, qualifications or experience. I dressed smart, always got on well with the little ones, & sometimes either spent a day or morning / afternoon as a ‘trial’, but it never went any further.
      I was finally sat down by said ‘agency’ & asked if I’d ‘ever considered losing weight’ !
      Despite being visible distressed I told them that my weight had little to do with my capabilities in terms of doing my job. I’d never had time off, I was always active, & never tired easily. I’m asthmatic & often was on steroid treatment but mines allergy related (not severe - but growing up I was on a ton of steroid treatments, & despite continuously being active I was never able to shift all of the weight. I was 5’9” back then & a size 18/20 for reference!) I even went to evening exercise classes just to increase my stamina & make sure I stayed fit even after a full weeks work in a nursery (pre-fat shaming !)
      The agency tried to insinuate that a few of the parents ‘had concerns’ regarding ‘my size’, to which I sharply responded that they could have asked me about it at the time, & I’d rather not work for anyone if they’d rather judge my capabilities based on my size.
      Someone I went to college with ended up confiding in me after a little ranty status I made on Facebook (she ended up becoming an au pair), she’d developed an ED. She was a size 14 but one family she worked for constantly made little remarks, & finally it got her down. She’s doing wonderfully all these years later & even has her own family, she ended up working with a really great family & travelling the world with them but it understandably knocked the confidence out of her. It was only then I realised how competitive the world of nannying was & I decided to take a step back from it all.
      I’m so glad you highlighted this issue as well. I don’t think many people outside of the U.K. quite understand just how much fat shaming goes on regarding nannying (or any job for that matter). As a fat person, you KNOW that ‘look’, & it has nothing to do with self esteem / confidence, it’s just common sense.
      I hope you’re enjoying your nannying job Sam if you do still work in the field ! I do miss working with children. I found out 5 years ago I have 2 genetic chronic disabilities, & I’m no longer able to work. Im glad I spent the time I did working with little ones though, it’s so special watching them grow & thrive ☺️ xx

      @LauraBidingCitizen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TheTuesday11 Hey :)
      Thank you for your response. I’m 32 now & I’ve been there, done that & got the T-shirt as the saying goes. I always asked for feedback; at least from the jobs I bothered to hear back from. You may be interested to hear both Sam & I’s responses above this comment but below yours for more understanding on nannying in the U.K. It’s a very different ball game to what it is the US where I feel you aren’t half as judged as you are here. Nannies here are somewhat seen as ‘trophies’ - for lack of better wording - & although those qualifications are needed, they also definitely go with looks.
      It had nothing to do with self esteem or confidence back then, I had the same as any teen or young adult really, my size never held me back from doing the job I loved :)
      All the best!

    • @TheTuesday11
      @TheTuesday11 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Laura Williams I understand it’s different everywhere you go. I’ve nannied in the USA , UK, Abu Dhabi and currently in Switzerland and I’ve seen nannies in every shape, size, color etc in all these different places. In fact I’ve witnessed the exact opposite of what you described. I’ve seen many a wives wanting a less attractive nanny so not to “threaten” her marriage. This has been publicly spoken in many conversations. I guess it just shows no matter where you are in the world people are well.... “interesting” 😂 I myself have never worked with such families, and hope to never involve myself with people like this.

I only thought there were just two kids. Once I put them to bed, I started to clean up and heard someone in the house. Turns out, the family had a 4 month old and hired a baby nurse to look after her 24/7 (turns out she had two baby nurses for one baby)
      I was offered a part time position to help with the two kids, parents had two other full time nannies and a full time house keeper, oh and the mom was a SAHM.

    As a full-time nanny, I could never work for a family for less than $15/hr. It’s my full-time job and not only am I feeding and caring for your children, I also have a degree in child development. I help with tutoring and/or preschool curriculum in reading, writing, math and science. I also work on emotional intelligence/emotional regulation, behavior, and motor development. I’d never do all of those things for less than $15/hr. Also the more kids, the higher the cost. You pay for quality care, experience, and education.
    Also: After a year, there should be a raise. This is a full-time job without many benefits (no PTO, no insurance, etc.) so you need to pay for it to be worthwhile for the nanny.
    Also also: taxes can be covered by the parents with Surepay!! SUPER easy for the parents AND the nanny.

If they don't teach him now and make it count, he will just think it's no big deal next time! If he was to do that to a stranger or kid at school he could have been sent to juvenile hall, had a record or in school it would have gone on his school record and followed him for years! Hopefully the embarrassment will make him think twice if he considers doing it again.

    I think the 10 years thing come from experience not necessarily Babysitting. As a kid I remember volunteering at my church watching over the little ones. So I think it’s just experience, I don’t know

    Honestly I’ve been babysitting for 6 years and I’m 19 years old (but 20 this month lol)
    But I used to babysit with my sister when I was 9 years old. Being a nanny I see these kids as my own and often call them my kids when under my care. I love what I do. Thank you for making this video for me to think about my own kids in the future

    Average pay for a nanny in the southern ontario area right now is $20-25/h
    That is strictly childcare. Cost goes up if you want housekeeping and meal prep

    Hi! I just wanted to pop into the comment section to say: as a 17-year-old who has been babysitting for a bit, this video is one of my favorites I have seen of yours(I have been watching since Levi's first Xmas). I loved seeing you talk about a topic that is so relevant in my life, and I loved hearing you talk so honestly and openly. I am so excited to be nannying one of my favorite girls this summer and this video made me even more excited. I wanted to let you know how much you inspire me to be positive and so keep going. I love you and you're family so much!

    I am a nanny and I love my job. Everyday I wake up without complaining.
    They don't use cameras or anything on me, but if they do I am totally fine with that and they don't even need to tell me that there are aome cameras. I never do anything parent won't me to do. I know how they would react and I react the same when the baby is naughty. I tell them everything, if she hurt herself while playing or did she cry.

      Me too 💕 I always take care of their little treasures as if they were there. So if they have cameras I’m sure they have fun watching lol

    You expect your nanny to completely run your household, children, cooking, cleaning, errands etc and you pay $15 an hour? Holy YIKES. 😬 No wonder your nanny is leaving.

    I've been around younger kids pretty much my whole life and I've been babysitting almost 2 years now and every single time I babysit I always tell the parents that they can pay me whatever they're comfortable with because I know everybody is in a different situation

    As a nanny, the pay thing is a little off. It doesn’t just depend on what your comfortable with. I’d base my pay, off how many kids they have, the area does matter, and the amount of work. Which I know you kind of touched on, but nannies need to know their worth! ❤️

    My mom is the older sister of 4. She babysat since 6 and practically raised one child at 9. So maybe not "experience" but maybe "experience babysitting my siblings" or "spent a lot of time with my little siblings"

    Some people actually started babysitting very young. I was 11 and no that's not a lie. The first two kids I babysat were only 3 months old! I've been a professional nanny for about 10 years now and I'm 28 at this moment. So yes, some people start out very young. Also hourly prices for nanny's is very different in the US conpared to Europe. We don't make nearly as much which is sad because it means you have to work 50 hours a week and still don't have a great income.
