Hello Joel Li We called into the Restaurant today for lunch and really enjoyed the menu the man in the yellow shirt in your video served us he was very helpful. A great recommendation cheers Ian kamonpan xxxxx
I was born in Cali so it was so easily accessible to get these ingredients. First born Gen asian cambodian/I don't know anymore. I joined the military then traveled so much. But fast forward I'm in lousiana. Not much but what any culture does make it work it. I'm in a state that it's alll agricultural. Love it, I'm actually making things that is only here. Sadly there's not alot of fish I want to eat here.

@@JoelsTastyRide Joel you dont even know, here in my Minnesota Asian grocery store, I can buy beef bitter bile juice in a small refridgerated container, and when I want to make laab or bitter beef tripe soup, all I gotta do is throw in a small spoonful and mix it in....whalaaa! Its magic as weird as that sounds. You gotta be a REALLY good friend for me to share my secret stash with you lol.
Hey, thanks for the message, and hello to you in New England. Yes, as my friend already answered correctly, there’s also the difficulty of picking a “correct” English spelling to begin with. so that’s why I just try to share the pronunciation as it sounds right here, and then, when you do visit a restaurant, maybe you can even make a cook or worker at the restaurant smile ( and that’s my privilege as well! To help you learn about, and enjoy Thai food for yourself!! )
Good evening from Marudi Sarawak!! That awesome menu from Northern Thailand. Im not familiar with the name but this vlog did give full information about each of the menu!! Joel you really master about the food backgroud! I love it. #MarudiWithLove😊
Maaaaaan JANGGUT!! Super cool to see your name today man, thanks for the great words. Glad to share a little bit more about Northern Thailand. Still looking forward someday to returning to Sarawak! The first time was awesome but that was 14 years ago, I’m overdue for another.
@14:40 I think that's what Thais call "ma-dtum sah-u" (มะตูมซาอุ "Saudi Bael"). It's not actually in the bael family, but Thais gave it that name because its fragrance is similar to bael. It's commonly eaten with larb. There are many English common names, Brazilian pepper tree or Florida holly, for example.
I always appreciate your wisdom and detailed ingredient knowledge. Just so cool, I am sure you are correct :) มะตูมซาอุ (you did forget the ม letter :)
Last time Joel picked a restaurant with an interesting slogan; this time he picked one with an interesting name. "Wittee" (วิถี) can mean the method of doing something, but that's usually expressed as "wittee tam" (วิถีทำ). "Wittee" can mean path, route, or way. There's a very common expression, "wittee Thai" (วิถีไทย). It meets the Thai way of life. Living life the Thai way means maintaining the culture, keeping the customs and traditions alive, following social norms, etc. And you pass all that on to your descendants. Larb is such a signature dish. It's associated with a certain way of life. It's the "taste of home" for so many people in the North, Esarn, and Laos. I wouldn't be surprised if the name of the restaurant is a humorous play on the term "wittee Thai". It appears to be a simple name, but there's a deeper cultural meaning behind it. "Wittee Larb"... "The Larb Way of Life". 👍👍👍 I love it!
I appreciate Li's sensibility, better safe and sorry. : ) I also appreciate how these dishes use a lot of animal parts that would most likely be discarded, well here in the states anyways.
Hi Wendyyyy!!!! Welcome back! Yes we both love the full blend and selection of every part, Li from her upbringing and me having my eyes opened since moving here. 🙌🏼🤘🏼👌🏼
Aleeeeeex man!!!! I hope you’re having a great day today man, you are the best supporter of my channel for this year for sure man. Incredible 🙏🙏🙏🙏🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Hi there , I am watching your blog after a long gap … I don’t know what changes you made in your appearance, you have started looking like like singer lonie Riche… the younger & Better version of course 🙏
I do wonder. I noticed there are A LOT of deaf people/people with hearing damage in Thailand. I suspect there is a reason for that. Namely bacterial issues with raw meat dishes.
Mylah:) haha well I saw the other one FIRST so I will say, “Mylah! You can do it, and I would say the non-normal cuts of meat are usually much more tasty (and also cheaper, and more authentic!) keeping in terms of the origins of the dish.”
Great! Thanks for sharing another new place (to me! [for most of us?]) In Chiang Mai! Never knew about this place, even with searching on Google maps. There are many spellings of (Laarb, Larb, Laab, Laap, Lab, ลาบ) Oh! WithiLarb shows up with the org Thai word ลาบ (Best way to search for OG food. Great explanations of what you're eating, how to order too! If I recall, you made a video with your pal, Bank's family who were preparing ลาบ maybe even roasting the ingredients for Pric Laarb! I guess at the end of this, the owner was showing you the house Pric Laarb they have for sale. It seems that most serious Laarb places have their own house blend that they often have bagged (bottled!) for sale. Fun to collect and compare. I kind of think of Lanna Pric Laarb the same way I think of Oaxacan Mole' ; all kinds of mystery ingredients slow roasted and ground. Like the Maquan you mentioned, in the same family as Szechuan peppercorn (Prickly Ash.) There's even ground tree bark in some recipes but yeah, all kinds of "secret ingredients!" My favorite in town (so far,) is Laab Kai Meuang Phan Waen. They've got the Bile as a side dish, that you can just dip your sticky rice scoop right into! YOW! I love a bunch of others south of town, including the "Laarb master" at the Sanpatong Buffalo market on Saturday A.M. !
You know what is so funny, before I even lived in Chiang Mai, before I moved here, four years ago, I already had the Buffalo market saved in my Google maps.… And I’ve still never been there :-) you always tell me about it, and I’m sure it must be so awesome!!
I love this, all the cross, cultural deliciousness, especially the way, Mexico. Reminds of Thailand in ingredients, in Weather, in spice levels also, so many things :-) actually, I am using your hot sauce right now as I enjoy a burrito from the market. 😂😂😂 this was one of the best gifts of the whole year, thank you so much man!!
Yes, you got it! I see you found it using Google maps, and sometimes besides just the spelling, I think Google tries to outsmart the user… And in the end ends up being not very helpful at all :-// Thank you for a really great comment today. Really enjoyed reading this. 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Shout out to London, hey bro. And yes, you are observant, I can share something funny with you, if you ever see me wearing contacts, you know, I either had a bicycle race that day or some kind of very hard training because I need contacts when I wear, either a TT specific helmet, or my special protective glasses, that I only use during races 😂😂
Hey Tom!!! that’s very interesting to hear, yes, there are many dishes with minced meat, but most of them are fried, correct? And I really don’t know what restaurant you have these meals at but I’m just guessing, as I shared in the video, it is more central Thai food in origin… Would that be right?
I'm guessing you've been looking at videos of "khao gaeng" (Curried dishes with rice). Stir-fried dishes contain meat cut into small pieces as well. The pieces have to be cut small by necessity. If you put in a piece of meat too big, the vegetables will be overcooked by the time the meat is done. If you want bigger portions of meat, there are plenty of options. Grilled chicken and sticky rice is one of the most popular meals in Thailand. Grilled beef is also popular. Go to a Thai food market, and you can usually find whole grilled or steamed fish. Last year I went to a celebration at a mosque. They had one half of an ox on a spit rotating above the coals! The price listed was per kilo. Of course, you could get as little as you wanted but, obviously, not small pieces there. They'll chop it up however you want. Ditto fried/steamed/grilled chicken at the markets.
David!! Hey hey man Well, you missed the triple chili cheers bro!! But yes, no bugs. Haha. And the bucket is years in the past... dont know if I'd do that one again, but it was GREAT at the time! :)
Hey Jake! Easy answer for that. The truth is, God loved us so much that he gave up his son (that whoever would freely believe in him will not perish, but gain the gift of eternal life, and give glory forever, to God).
Well, I would love to for you to be helpful instead of only telling someone they’re “wrong.” Actually I have a lot of experience with this dish, I’m actually very confident with everything that I’ve shared in this video.
VERY DELICIOUS FOOD I MUST SAY ...BUT ONE ADVICE IF ANYONE WHO IS PREGNANT SHOULD NOT EAT RAW PAPAYA SALAD THOUGH IT IS MOUTH WATERING BECAUSE YOU CAN LOOSE YOUR BABY ...REST AS USUAL GREAT VIDEO JOEL
Pathman!!!! I do appreciate your message :-) do you want me to argue against the word sure? Because after 15 years, I have yet to have a single case… Maybe they are there, who knows, I guess what I should say is “I have yet to suffer from a single case!”
@@JoelsTastyRide They've been advertising parasite medicine during the televised Muay Thai fights for decades. If the TV's on and I hear a commercial for the medicine, I know the fights are on! 😅 The reason is well-known. Most of the viewers are from Esarn, and with all the raw food, many of them have parasites. I know some people who take the medicine every once in a while just to make sure they've gotten rid of them. I used to do it myself, but it's been so long since I've had raw food or the uncooked fermented fish sauce, that it's unnecessary.

Hi Teera!! So I am guessing you are from Thailand or Laos? I remember your name but I didnt know (yet :) about where your heritage is from... thanks for the message today!
My dad is Thai and mom is Laos but born and raised in usa @@JoelsTastyRide
Bile is amazing, and is the sole ingredient that makes Laab unique and gives it its special characteristic flavor.
Mr. cookie :-) I’m just laughing out loud, seriously… I love that message. Ha ha ha you clearly know this dish, we are together in our enjoyment, I think. Laap Cheers!!!!! Have a great day.
Amazing meal reminds me of my childhood
Dude :) Seriously Cliff?? That's a pretty great childhood, wow! I gotta hear more about this!!
@JoelsTastyRide my sisters husband is Thai so growing up his mom cooked for us all the time I grew up eating traditional Thai food and Korean food
Oh! Looks yummy 😋
☺️
Butsaya!!! Great to see you, thank you for the message today!
Hi Max!
@@JoelsTastyRide Hiya luv
Here in US (New England) in Thai restaurants they call it larb. Mostly made with chicken meat. It's usually pretty dry, at least what I had.
That's how it's spelled in English, but it's pronounced as Joel explained in the video, "lahp". In Thai, the are no words ending with a "b" sound.
You just have the best thumbnail photo
Hey, thanks for the message, and hello to you in New England. Yes, as my friend already answered correctly, there’s also the difficulty of picking a “correct” English spelling to begin with. so that’s why I just try to share the pronunciation as it sounds right here, and then, when you do visit a restaurant, maybe you can even make a cook or worker at the restaurant smile ( and that’s my privilege as well! To help you learn about, and enjoy Thai food for yourself!! )
🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thanks! I was wondering about that one.
@@dondobbs9302 You're welcome, Don.
I always appreciate your wisdom and detailed ingredient knowledge. Just so cool, I am sure you are correct :) มะตูมซาอุ (you did forget the ม letter :)
So cool!!!!

Ha! Hi KnD, very cool to welcome you back for another vid today!

You’re awesome Khwan, thank you!!
Yeah, you made me hungry!
Yoooooo!!! Great to see you today, sorry about the hunger, but I have the feeling that you know how to locate some Laap… I hope? Soon? 🤘🏼😂🙌🏼
I love it!
I say it is the love they put in Thai food ❤. It is not easy to prepare Thai dishes properly with great flavor and ingredients.
Hiii Deana :). Yes, I think you are right about this! I think at a place like WitiLaap, it really shows.
Thank you for the messages :). HAPPY Monday!
Goshhhh, I am so hungry now! Thanks, Joel 😂

I appreciate Li's sensibility, better safe and sorry. : ) I also appreciate how these dishes use a lot of animal parts that would most likely be discarded, well here in the states anyways.

Is there mint in northern Thai laap?
Hi Mug! The thing about Laap is, yes, there could be, but it’s up to you! Could be any of 10 herbs, it’s about what the cook has on hand.

Hi VeeVee!!! Thanks for the good words 😆 I hope you have a great day today!
At ATL it’s raining & the climate is amazing perfect for maybe Tum yam soup real spicy 🌶️😻
It’s authentic taste. Most Thai restaurants in US are westernized.

@@JoelsTastyRide English football
It’s the spices, fish sauce and some sugar, and a bit more 😂!
It is the spices :-) ha ha, the simple answer is the best
Let’s start with the meaning or Tum and the meaning of Yum
Hi Thino! Thanks for writing back. Where do you come from? Have you eaten these dishes near where you live?
@@JoelsTastyRide long story but I’ll write later
blackie sweet potato plant please there is 2 type
Hi Wing!! I don’t know about the sweet potatoes but I’m happy to meet you, thanks so much for the message today!!
I do wonder. I noticed there are A LOT of deaf people/people with hearing damage in Thailand. I suspect there is a reason for that. Namely bacterial issues with raw meat dishes.
Hey Mark! I don’t notice that at all about hearing but I DO have plenty of friends with all types of ailments from raw foods - for sure 😮
Almost as a tom yum… seems to me you have know understanding of the wording yum
Well 🤘🏼😂 thank you for watching this video!
I take it back 😂 the innards… no, thank you!
Mylah:) haha well I saw the other one FIRST so I will say, “Mylah! You can do it, and I would say the non-normal cuts of meat are usually much more tasty (and also cheaper, and more authentic!) keeping in terms of the origins of the dish.”
Laos laap is the best.. FYI northern Thailand is influenced by Laos ingredients. Issan is in Thailand but more influenced by Laos.
Thanks for sharing in the JOYS of LAAP! Very cool comment, thanks for hanging out with us, thanks for supporting this video!
Is he related to mark Wiens at all? Lol
Hi Chanta!! Have a great day today!
I see you found it using Google maps, and sometimes besides just the spelling, I think Google tries to outsmart the user… And in the end ends up being not very helpful at all :-//
Thank you for a really great comment today. Really enjoyed reading this. 🙌🏼🙌🏼
@@JoelsTastyRide Wow! Thanks! Let me know when you run low, I'm always brewing up more.
U wearing contacts now?
Shout out to London, hey bro. And yes, you are observant, I can share something funny with you, if you ever see me wearing contacts, you know, I either had a bicycle race that day or some kind of very hard training because I need contacts when I wear, either a TT specific helmet, or my special protective glasses, that I only use during races 😂😂
thai food doesn't look good to me it's always grounded up little pieces of meat
Hey Tom!!! that’s very interesting to hear, yes, there are many dishes with minced meat, but most of them are fried, correct?
Tom yum doesn’t have coconut milk…. Coconut milk came later on
Yes! That’s great, good to know this and to appreciate how the dish has changed!

Haha for sure, Max I look forward to these each week - no joke!
Now THAT is a video we haven't made yet
Why do all the bad guys get the good stuff?
Hey Jake! Easy answer for that. The truth is, God loved us so much that he gave up his son (that whoever would freely believe in him will not perish, but gain the gift of eternal life, and give glory forever, to God).
Why does he look and talk like Mark Weins?
Talk is easy Kevin (we grew up together AND lived together) but, you really think just having short brown hair makes two white guys look alike!?? :)
Chopped ,fresh and raw is a way wrong to describe the dish…..get back to basic with understanding
Well, I would love to for you to be helpful instead of only telling someone they’re “wrong.” Actually I have a lot of experience with this dish, I’m actually very confident with everything that I’ve shared in this video.
What’s does the word Yum means?
Laap/larb does not mean raw… you are dead wrong on that….
Hi Thino! I learned from the original recipe, but yes it’s cool to see how many versions and variations there are today (in many countries)
Hi Celina ♥️😂💚
Don’t worry, I’m not pregnant!!
Laap = sure way of getting intestinal worms😂
The reason is well-known.
Laab is a Lao dish 100%. Thai has no real dish. Its all Laos
