    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Boston - 23 April 2024
    1. Med of William Barton Rogers building of MIT
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Agustina Rodriguez Biasone, MIT student from Argentina:
"People in both sides are suffering. Then we can discuss who is blame for these, what should be addressing. But for us, and also being in a university that the values are trying to make innovations better for people's life. Should we answer ourselves or question ourselves like what can we do for people to stop suffering."
    3. Med of a man carrying a sign and walking on MIT campus that sign says "We stand with Israel = We stand for genocide"
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicole Angehrn, MIT student Switzerland:
"I think it's really nice to have the opportunity for people to express their concerns. I think one has to be able to separate the academical with the political. That's important. But I think as long as things are kept peaceful and like there's no disruptions of like the well-being of the other students, I think it's perfectly fine."
    5. Close of a sign that says "I stand with Gaza, humanity needs a real revolution"
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Baltasar Dinis, MIT student:
"I think it's a very important step, specifically because at MIT, we have a special relationship with the Israeli government. It's not that we're calling for a general divestment from Israel. We're calling specifically for MIT to divest from the Israeli Ministry of Defense. At MIT, we do research that is an ad sponsored specifically by the Israeli Ministry of Defense. Since 2015, we've received over $13 million just filled for inflation. And as members of this community and as people that, look at Hasan and see the destruction and the genocide that's going on, we cannot in good conscience think that's OK. And so we just specifically want MIT to stop contributing directly to the massacres going on in Palestine right now. So it's not a general call to divestment. It's a specific call for military contracts that need to be stopped."
    7. Wide of a sign that says "Anti-zionism does not equal anti-semitism"
    8. SOUNDBITE (English) Baltasar Dinis, MIT student:
"After Columbia (university) and after the immense backlash and the immense reaction from the community in New York City and the faculty at Columbia University that supported their students, that made sure that they did their best to to keep their students safe. And we saw signs from Columbia that it was it understood that it made a mistake. We thought that other universities had taken the hint. And then yesterday morning, we saw a crackdown at Yale very similar. And we saw an even bigger crack down at NYU where NYPD not only arrested students but arrested faculty that were in the most peaceful ways just protecting, people in prayer. So it is definitely a concern. We need to make sure that this is not happen on our campus."
    ++EDIT ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
U.S. colleges and universities are preparing for end-of-year commencement ceremonies with a unique challenge: providing safety for graduates while honoring the free speech rights of students involved in protests over the Israel-Hamas war.
Since the conflict began, colleges and universities have struggled to maintain a balance between security and civil liberties amid intense student debate and protests.
Many schools that tolerated protests and other disruptions for months are now doling out more heavy-handed discipline.
At MIT, protesters also have asked the university to stop what they say is funding from the Ministry of Defense in Israel to university projects with military objectives.

What do these students say to peers and professors whose credentials and prospects they have harmed with these ineffectual actions?

Mit has their own people deciding decisions about that, they, the student protestors don't speak for our country, many who support Israel, like me.

Always interesting to see what foreign students think of MIT
Maybe with their demand into military contracts they could just replace the Lost Revenue with increased tuition

I do not agree with what Netanyahu is doing in Gaza. However, these students need to understand our Government is trying to get him to change his tactics. They should protest Netanyahu and let the negotiations process work itself out. Their demands are unreasonable and will likely not work. Wake Up America!!!

Protesting sure beats studying. Final exams are now "take home" at Columbia University. Mission accomplished! The irony of the protests is we're seeing a Frankenstein monster attacking it's creator. If you want to know who rules you... simply identify who it is you cannot criticize.
