  • I take my narrowboat through Banbury town on the Oxford Canal. Starting at the boaters facilities near Banbury lock, I head north through a very leaky lock, operate a lift bridge, then past Castle Quay shopping centre and Spiceball park and onwards to moor up near the Amazon warehouses.

Hi Phil, made me smile when you said the lift bridge looked low. First time we went under it, novice boaters on our first trip on our recently purchased boat, I managed to dent the chimney of our Lockgate stove.....🍷🍷

Yes these bridges don't account for anything sticking up above the roof. Often a degree of uncertainty.

Hi Phill great viewing great idea going through early my favourite time is Sunday morning , that Sovereign wharf
Shop is only open on Fridays but they leave a phone number to call , but I do wish it could be open more often for gas supply, that lift bridge being so close to Tooleys yard isn't easy but as my boat is only 24ft I manage to pull up
On the left and go to the windlus I wonder if you could with a larger boat just bring the stern over but perhaps not the angle to leave the bow out but like you said it's awful when to many people watching saying is he going to fall in Mavis 😮 well I don't know !!
    Dad where's his Horse !!

That old lift bridge certainly was a nightmare on your own. I used to try and get a couple of passing kids to sit on the balance beam to hold it open and just hope that they didn't get bored and wander off while I was passing under. On a note of historical pedantry, that 'arm' as you leave Banbury was in fact the original line of the canal and was still in use in the 1980s. The bit under the road replaced it when the road was built. The winding point you mention was where the original line came out.

Actually like to see an area developed, but it has to be done right. It must add to the area and in this case the canal as well. Looks good and ensures the existence of the canal. It makes it busier and better known with people.
It was a nice cruise Phil 😄

It was pretty run down before that redevelopment.

Thanks Phil! Is it really 8 years since David from @CruisingTheCut did a video showing the CRT doing maintenance on this very lock. Suddenly feeling even older than usual.

Hi Phil absolutely love your vlogs the knowledge and information you provide from your experiences on the network are what a narrow boat cruising vlog should be for me, I'm curious I noticed you left your windlass on the mechanism of the lift bridge but turned it around was that in case the bridge decided to drop back down, using the handle of the windlass as a safety net?... if so excellent idea, never though of doing that 👍..

    • @NarrowboatJourneys
      @NarrowboatJourneys  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Much appreciated. I reverse the windlass (probably unnecessary) as in the past I have seen these start to gently unwind. If it did that the handle of the windlass would catch on the mechanism to stop that. Of course if a hydraulic hose burst it would drop like a stone!

the lift bridge just before tooleys yard has always been there it used to lead down from factory st where i was born over 70 yrs ago to alps furniture makers on the other side and the slaughter house farther down the lane and there was a coal yard where the castle centre is after toolys was a council yard with a winding hole and at the back of that was the castle mound

You made me doubt my memory but I checked my old canal guide book dated 1989 and it clearly shows a lift bridge immediately below Banbury lock as I reported. They did away with it during the redevelopment of the area and built a new lift bridge above the lock. I found an article about it and the old lift bridge is shown in the photo. www.narrowboatworld.com/6319-objections-to-canal-side-development

mr Brooks is correct and lift bridge 164 was known as Factory Street bridge. My copy of early 1970s Nicholsons clearly shows the lift bridge above the lock. Perhaps it was rebuilt at some stage but modernised with the hydraulic equipment. I came through there at least twice in the early1970s and while I don’t remember the lift bridges specifically I agree with you that the whole area has been transformed and barely recognisable. The area on the left above the lock was I think an open area for a bus station which must have swept away a lot of buildings in the 50s or early 60s. LTC Rolt describes the area in detail in his book Narrowboat in 1939/40. As you say Phil bridge 165 Mill Lane lift bridge has gone and replaced by the normal bridge.

On scene 6:19 I noticed a Royal Air Froce flag flying. Do you know the reason? Really enjoyed watching your video, so much I'm a subscriber now! I was stationed at USAFE (RAF) UPPER HEYFORD. And I really enjoyed, while off work, traveling All around the Midlands & the UK.

Thank you, and welcome aboard! I don't know about that flag? It's flying in Tooleys boat yard so something to do with them I suppose? I remember the fighter jets taking off from Upper Heyford in the early 90's. Very very fast and noisy!
